I can't believe I've been resisting trying out Capture One for so long. Since switching from Olympus to Fuji, I haven’t been able to use my old presets in Lightroom. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t achieve the same look I was getting with the Bayer sensor. A week ago, I installed Capture One, and everything has changed since then. For me, aside from the sharpness and detail I’m now getting, the most important thing is the color consistency. I'll never look back.

Long time ago I switched from Lightroom to Capture One exactly for that reason. Now I switched from Capture One to DxO PhotoLab 6 as it's another big improvement. With low ISO images you get even more detail and high ISO especially with new 40mpix is no contest. I've been use C1 for about three years and love every second of using it. After a year I went back to LR and it felt more like a childs toy. I watched a video about how Phase One dove into each camera body and lens to calibrate C1 for each body/lens. They just don't guess, they get it right on. Also I find C1 is designed for professionals. You can create several workflows for each type of photography you do. All the way from importing to deliverables. Another great feature is being able to move the tools around. You can't do that in LR. Everytime Phase One updates C1 it just keeps getting better and they listen to their customers. Yeah, we've been able to bring back features they removed or add tools people requested even though pros don't use them.

The difference is not that dramatic to me, but I still use DxO PureRaw with DeepPrime that is much better than either LR and C1 when it comes to low light enhancements at the import process. Please consider: LR changed the default sharpness level to 40 with newer releases - that is too much for Fujifilm files (in my observation). The problem with CO is the performance, they simply can not solve the shagginess on high resolution screens, every slider has a latency, half a second, sometimes even a full second. On a 5K iMac it is a disaster since always. The problem could be solved with the Open In Low Resolution option available since the Monterey, however there is no such option anymore and we are stuck with the incredibly slow app. LR is instant, so it is possible. As for the sharpness, well it is true but not the way you presented here. CO sharpens much, much better, but it also starts with high noice reduction setting while LR does not. also, CO sharpening is far from perfect, it has a lot of splotchiness and LR noise looks better so not a clear win as it seems. Most of the time the difference is negligible if it exists at all. But with the foliage and with the high iso images there could be some problems with the LR sharpening. In the end it really does not matter which one you use, and most of the time the comparisons in which one kills the other are flawed, just as yours. Your black and white conclusions seen a bit too religious and I believe you rushed up with them, and I do not blame you, we are all guilty of that. Just, the reality is a bit more complex. :)

easy reason... fuji isn't a bayer sensor. it is x-trans. the layout of colors is not a standard array of photo receptors. it actually eliminates some bayer issues such as moire. x-trans allows fuji to remove the low pass filter and that results in better quality (for the same size/resolution sensor). it has reduced color fringing abd improved sharpness. The reason lightroom sucks compared to capture one is that lightroom doesn't account for this x-trans layout of color photo receptors. Instead it interpolates things and tries to force the x-trans layout into a set of processing algorithms that were designed for a bayer layout. Capture one natively processes x-trans layout, and thus shows the added benefit of the x-trans sensor. to this day, i have absolutely no idea why adobe refuses to update lightroom to include x-trans support natively. perhaps the software code is so insanely complex it wouldn't be easy to retroactively add it without a major overhaul? but then capture one does bayer and x-trans no problem, but maybe it was designed that way from the ground up and thus more easy to implement? maybe adobe has something against fuji? i have no idea. but it made me drop lightroom for c1, and i've never looked back.

As you talk about "Fujifilm", you need to first distinguish between Fujifilm cameras in the Bayer paradigm on the one hand and X-trans on the other. Most raw processing software is in the Bayer paradigm. And images from the X-trans sensor are not. That's not necessarily a problem, except when algorithms are used for X-trans that got developed for Bayer. X-trans needs a completely different approach. Some people think that there is a simple way of tweaking the Bayer raw conversion to we get RGB images from X-trans, but that is where the muddiness comes in. This video is about the X-T cameras only.

it's pretty simple: Fuji doesnt like Adobe (for whatever reason) - they didnt give the demosaicing algorythm to them - so Adobe tried themselves but dont get it right, because of the X-Trans sensor which is unique to Fuji works differently than any other camera manufacturer which all use a Bayer Matrix. So what we look at, on our large computer display, is the result of "raw processing". Incidentally this happens in camera too, when we look at the display or eVF. The raw file, in the meantime, remains 100% colour noise and 100% luminance noise - it only has monochrome data elements - zero RGB pixels. How LrC and C1 do their magic depends on "defaults" or our deviations from these. The Mudbricks (mudbrick AKA adobe) work everything towards their neutral flattish rendition. The Adobe default profile is actually camera model specific. C1 opts for a more vivid default. To me C1 presented a no-go with their treatment of black point & white point, plus their Ts & C's (AKA pricing). As LrC doesn't do raw processing but actually Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) as a plug-in, when we comment on raw processing, we mean ACR. Well, it has two fundamental weaknesses: its sharpening versus detail recovery and detail loss, and, its graininess in the darker - perfectly within dynamic range - exposure zones. These latter are easily visible when pixel peeping on display or printing larger than A3. Both are failed raw processing where demosaicking goes wrong. The detail handling is done best by Topaz's Gigapixel AI when you blow up significantly. Note, at 1,440 DPI, you need a lot more dots than pixels and this app controls that problem very well. The noise - ability to not generate graininess - is best handled by either Topaz's DeNoise AI or DxO PURE RAW. Where colour, vividness, tint, contrast, etc impact your image, you need to work those sliders.

when i 1st bought an fujifilm and join the fuji family. i watch alot of youtube reviews and all of them (include omar) shows that capture one works better with fuji raws. reluctantly i step in and try and never regret since. (i was a lightroom user). 1 thing i always realize is that lightroom has weird wormy color effects after editing. ever since i switch to capture one, i did not even saw any wormy color effects anymore. when i tried to edit with lightroom again with my fuji raws, i immediately give up. the colors are too weird for my liking. i also tried using my sony back on lightroom, shut down the catalog within 5 minutes. switch to capture one, immediately i see amazing raw details, resolution and colors on my sony raws just using capture one! i been telling alot of my friends to use capture one ever since but mostly fall on deaf ears. they refuse to believe and refuse to move to new platform. i understand all the presets and stuff but come on, are you willing to sacrifice good quality raw read outs just for that instant preset that have weird wormy artifacts? now my full work flow is just using capture one regardless of sony and fuji raws. And Fuji raws HDR works great in capture one. i was able to recover alot of highlight details regardless of overexpose or underexpose. also like you, i pixel peep alot. Sony FF resolution (24mp) has so much more details than fuji 26mp. but capture one did a good job in showing those great details and sharpness with their amazing raw read out

I have Lightroom 6 (the non-subscription version from a few years ago). It doesn't read RAF files at all! You either need to upgrade LR to a more recent version or use another program to convert RAF to DNG. I'm currently using Capture 1 Express (free version). I'm not a pro so it's tough to justify Capture 1 Pro as it's a subscription.

Main reason is the type of sensor Lr reads, Bayer sensors. Fuji uses xtrans sensors, which Lr does a terrible job converting(why they still haven’t fixed i don’t know…). C1 is great, ended up switching to it because it respects the native quality of the raw file, xtrans or Bayer…almost regretted moving to fuji, but yeah, C1 exists!🎉

Capture One relies on libRAW, an open source raw format decoder. Most raw processors use it and it is quite good. Lightroom is one of the very few that uses a proprietary raw processor and it's just not that great for x-trans sensors.

Have you compared the straight out of camera JPEGs to the LR and C1 RAW files? In my experience in doing so, the SOOC jpegs actually look quite similar to the LR RAW files in terms of muddy results. It seems quite possible to me that was we are seeing is actually a downside of X-Trans, rather than LR doing something detrimental the the photos. I think C1 likely has a clever sharpening algorithm that corrects for these deficiencies.

Many people snivel about the cost of Capture One being higher than Adobe. But you get what you pay for with Capture One. Yes, Capture One doesn't do some (many?) of the things that Adobe can do. But it isn't designed to do everything. What it does do, it does extremely well. For example, if you tether when you shoot, Capture One is far better than Adobe.

Thing is, the only time I look at a picture at 100% magnification is when I am editing it. True, Capture one is a better raw converter, much better for Fuji files, but Lightroom is good enough for most, and at $10 a month you get also Photoshop. That to me is a great deal, since you can do much more than with what Capture One offers. For a pro that makes money, Capture one can be easily justified. For an amateur, Adobe is a better deal. You get all new features periodically, a great file management system, new camera support, more flexibility, at a significantly lower price.

My brother in Christ I have your answer: Camera manufacturers do not provide third parties with raw processing information which is why the results vary from one software to another differ. It's up to the engineers at Adobe to reverse engineer the raw data & improve how their software handles the files. It's what they've always had to do, actually & it isn't necessarily exclusive to Fujifilm cameras. New cameras with slightly differing raw interpretation can cause phenomenon like this.

This is the reason why there is no proper key to decode data from raw files in adobe applications. many years ago in the days of the Nikon D300, only Nikon's NX was able to get the true quality of raw files, and this is due to the lack of information about their correct reading by Adobe CRW or Lightroom and other applications. Of course, in the further part of the edition, the algorithms used by the program in the corrections are also important ...

Raw photos are not unprocessed. The simple fact that you can change ISO on raw files means that there is processing going on which you cannot affect in any way. It is done by the manufacturer. Because capture one contractually has more knowledge about how to display Fuji files compared to Adobe you end up having a technically better processed image. And it‘s not just Fuji. C1 is just using different sharpening algorithms. Even with my Nikon Z7 you can see that C1 sharpens the really small details better while the whole image is less noisier. It‘s just a more modern „perfect“ image processing I‘d say.
