Another great podcast! It made me realise something I did in the past. I'd like to share that little story here. On how I once taught my greyhound, who didn't naturally fetch anything, to fetch something in a very 'out of the box' way: My greyhound is probably one of the least fetch-inclined dogs you could come across. No interest in picking up anything (let alone fetching it) Absolutely no toy drive, at all either. Slightly below average food drive I'd say. One day I thought it would be a nice fun challenge to see if I could somehow teach him fetch. Back then I tought I was luring him, but now in hindsight (because of this video) I think it was more a case of "out of the box shaping". I initially started of with using different methods from youtube video's. None worked for us. Most of them required at least some sort of natural inclination for the dog to pick up a toy. Others focused on rewarding incremental behaviours (touching toy, then nibbling it, then grabbing it, then holding it, then add duration, then fetch...) Touching and nibbling was easy. But the step to actually hold something was apparently a much bigger (and impossible) step for him then it was for other dogs. He had zero confidence in holding any object in his mouth and didn't understand it no matter how small the steps were. We were making zero progress. Then one day I had an 'eureka' moment. What if I could literally capture my dog picking something up, bringing it somewhere, then reward him? Yeah that'd be great... except, my dog never picks up stuff on his own ever, so I can't capture it. So I threw the idea away again. Then one day I came home and had bought my dog one of those 'Chicken wrapped rawhides'. You know those white rawhide sticks with orange chicken wrapped around them. Let's call them 'Wraps' for short. This is a chew he gets occassionally, pretty low value to him, but he'll enjoy one inside the home. I threw the wrap on the floor. He calmly walked up to it, picked it up, brought it to his bed and started to chew it. Then it hit me, how could I not have realised this before? He always picks up these wraps (or any other food that requires heavy chewing), because they require some time to eat so he always takes them to his bed. This is a behaviour I could capture and reward with something WAY MORE high value. So the next day I got another one of those wraps. I sat down next to his bed (already thinking ahead for when I want him to fetch to 'me') and threw the wrap in the middle of the room and said "Fetch" (which had zero meaning at that moment). Since it isn't super high value, he lazily walked up to it, picked it up calmly, put it down on his bed and... *CLICK* That's when I clicked and gave him a raw meatball. He was ecstatic and had no clue what he just got rewarded for. Ofcourse he lost all interest in the wrap and I discreetly took the wrap away. I then continued the day as if nothing happened and waited for him to calm down and get bored again. After a few minutes he was calm again and I repeated the exact same thing. Sat next to his bed, threw the wrap in the room, said "Fetch!", he fetched the wrap and placed it on the bed, *Click*, reward with raw meatball and discreetly take the wrap away again. After a few repetitions he started to 'get it'. He no longer retrieved the wrap because he wanted to eat it in his bed, he started to retrieve it to his bed because he knew that behaviour would get him a meatball. The wrap became an inanimate object in the face of the raw meatballs. The next steps went very slow: Firstly, I started of with slowly 'removing' his bed, by replacing it with a cushion, then a towel and then a little bowl in front of me and finally my hands shaped like a bowl. The area in which he was supposed to 'drop' the retrieve became smaller and smaller. He still struggles with dropping it in my hand today, but it's amazing how far he's come. I often still click and reward when he drops outside of my hand, even though it is incorrect. It's important to me that it stays fun and that he gets rewarded for the effort. Dropping it in the perfect spot is not worth any loss of motivation from his side. Secondly, I didn't want him to pick up those edible wraps forever. I wanted him to pick up anything I'd throw. Actual toys. One day I decided to just throw a toy instead of the wrap and it failed completely. Too big of a step (heavy, big, weird texture, etc. he wouldn't pick it up or tried, disliked the feeling in his mouth and stopped.), so I had to be creative again. I decided I wanted to start with a tiny tiny lightweight toy that I could attach to the wrap with him barely noticing it. Then over time increase the size of the toy and decrease the size of the wrap. But what toy can you buy in a bazillion different sizes while still looking identical? After some googling I came across gundog Dummies. Perfect! One identical (shape, colour and texture wise) dummy available in sizes that ranged from keychain size, to puppy size, to S, L, M, XL, XXL etc. with a little thread I tightly tied the keychain dummy to the wrap and used it in our training. He's so sensitive that he did notice the difference a bit, but it didn't completely discourage him from picking him up. The sweet spot! He would pick it up in a very insecure and awkward way, but the point was that he would retrieve it, which he did. Rewarded bigtime! Slowly he got used to it. Whenever he got comfortable retrieving it, I would increase the dummy size that I tied to the wrap and decrease the wrap size by breaking off a piece. It was amazing to see his confidence grow as he got comfortable picking up bigger and bigger dummies. He also started running instead of just walking or trotting because was so excited. Eventually we got to a point where he would retrieve a regular sized dummy withouth the wrap attached to it, over and over again. Then I tried out his fetch with various other toys, which he did beautifully. Ofcourse during all of that, I also slowly increased the distance of the fetch. I started to throw stuff in the hallway or in other rooms. I also made a small start doing some simple reteieving outside. Today he will retrieve pretty much anything I throw and will bring it to me. Outside is still difficult, so are long distances. I'm comfortable with how well he retrieves inside the home and to me we achieved our goal of 'fetch'. But the best thing of all; Fetch has become his all time favourite trick to do inside the home. He absolutely loves it and gets all weird and sassy when he does it. It often gives him the zoomies too. No idea if anyone is ever going to read this, but I just had to share it and this felt like the place where people could appreciate it. Who knows it inspires people to try the same. For me it was a very joyfull experience I had with my dog!

Thank you Susan for all these podcasts. I actually need to start from the beginning my Chili is 6 months old. And needs a lot of training. My fault I spoiled him from the beginning because be was so small and a rescue not knowing what he had been through. He didn't trust anyone but me. That's when I shouldv started training on more things instead of spoiling him. But since I've been watching your podcasts I find there's still hope yeah. It's too bad you cudnt come out to my house and help. But I know you're a very busy woman. So I'll continue to watch your podcasts and take notes. If I have problems I'll let you know. Wow! Zuka (my 4 year old GSP) & I are really enjoying all things Susan Garrett. I always said that Zuka really tries to understand what I am asking her to do and with shaping outside the box, we are really having a great time and seeing such successs. We have used the blanket (I used an old yoga mat), search, Cook, fold the blanket before Home School the dog (I think that's where). That time she was supposed to sit on even the smallest folded blanket which she did. This time, as I was shaping a Pose using Paws Up as the command, she started off by sitting on the blanket or running to her bed and lying down. I just had to be quicker & give Cook when only paws were on blanket for her to see the difference. Today I worked through the steps all the way to introducing the words PAWS UP while the folded blanket was still on the floor which worked well. I will do it again later and then again tomorrow... on the floor until I see she understands the behaviour I am asking for before moving the blanket onto another surface. Excited to learn for her to Pose. Thanks!

Replying to my own comment because now I realize that I did not set up the "A" = Antecedent Arrangements of this shaping. If I did, Zuka's bed would not have been there for her to go lie on. She did what she thought she should do. So much for us to learn

As always, we loved this one, but my husband and I laughed about the pen. The "pen" is almost the ultimate forbidden fruit in our house. No shaping or luring necessary. I swear that he can hear a pen hit the floor at 100 yards. We are in Recallers and he can ignore the food on the floor, but not a pen...yet!

Great timing, as always Susan. I was only thinking a few day ago that I need to do more shaping. My dog loves learning this way and it seems so much more effective and lasting. But I do have one issue, in that she tends to revert to what she already knows - for instance, I start most sessions with a quick 'paws up' since it is one of her favourite and easiest behaviours. Then I move onto, say, shaping a retrieve. She will start the retrieve but then take the object with her and do a 'paws up' with it - super cute but not what I wanted. Or she will lie on her bed with it, thinking that might be what I want from her. I'm not sure I'm explaining this very well, but basically she will revert to learnt behaviours rather than trying something new. If I wait her out she just gets frustrated and gives up. If you have any tips I'd be really grateful. Thank you.

In your follow up podcast can you give some examples of how to break down movement behaviors? For example, going around a cone away from you or going around your legs and ending up on the other side (that’s what my dog and I are struggling with in Rally right now). I’m trying to understand how to break down those types of behaviors that don’t involve a specific location but rather a movement. I imagine it involves “search” and maybe targets, but I’d love to see how you think about it. My dog and I are resulting to luring to get the behavior but it’s clear that she’s focused on the food and not what she’s doing (evident by how many times she tries to cross in front of me to end up where the food will be and expedite the reward). Thanks!

OH SUSAN, I'm dealing with a dog (11 month old American Black Lab) that is food guarding now. The other day she got into a 3-4 second fight with my son in law's dog ( I forgot to separate them before I put her food down) but even after I got the second dog out she continued to snarl and growl at ME while laying down for about 2 min. but didn't touch her food because I had not given her permission I suppose. I wasn't sure what to do other than wait for her to calm down and then release her. I was a tiny bit concerned for my safety. If my other dogs in the past had growled I would have just taken their food away. But this was scary. I'm not sure what to do moving on. I have my daughter and her family, including 3 children, living with me and 11 other grands that visit often. I've tried since she was 8 weeks old to desensitize her to having people around her while she eats including children. I watched an episode where you said they need to be able to growl and have instructed the little ones to move away if she growls. In the past it's been little growls with a wagging tail and happy body, but not the other day with me. I'm hoping it was just the stupid mistake of letting the other dog near, but even so she's going to be living here for a year or so too. HELP PLEASE!! I don't want to make things worse. I am part of Homeschool the dog but haven't gotten very far in that.

Absolutely love your Tater bone story. I had a dog that would do that over a favorite chair. Tyler couldn’t figure out how to get the other dog out of “his chair.” Then it dawned on him - bark at nothing. I didn’t realize this was happening until I observed it. Ted would go flying off the chair because obviously we were being invaded by ghosts! Tyler would come trotting back, tail in the air & a cheeky grin as he claimed his spot. Both of them are at the Bridge now & I suspect that game continues. 😂 🥹
