That's an AWESOME technique. I would have never thought about that, yet it seems so obvious, to take a step back and look at the sheets from a different perspective. Now let's stress test this with the intro in Wieniawski's variation on an original theme

A teacher of mine had an alphanumeric system for the basic half-step/whole-step finger distributions. I sometimes still mark those designations above 4-note groupings. William Primrose attempted to systematize this in his scale method "Technique is Memory", in which all scales are played 1-2-3-4 up and down the four strings without shifting during any scale, written out in positions 1-7, in the 24 keys. It's up to the player to take something like this a step further and chunk it with basic pencil markings. Less marking is more. Your penciled "chunks" definitely need to be simpler than "diagonal lines connecting every half step, square patterns connecting every whole step" or "finger number above EVERY SINGLE NOTE."

For me, it’s simplest to just mark in the half-steps, then everything else is a whole step (or greater). Also, patterns are important, but we can also think of and memorize how our hands and fingers feel and the shapes they make (more or less curved, for example) in certain positions, especially in relationship to one another (whether it be neighboring notes or a few notes apart). And remembering that crossing strings also affects the shape of the finger (for example, the 3rd finger is going to have to reach less going from C (2nd finger) to D (3rd finger) on the A string in first position, then going from C (2nd finger) on A to G (3rd finger) on the D string. I try to teach this to all my students, from beginner to advanced!

Learning in 4 note patterns (5 in some cases), as whole and half step intervals is basically learning tetrachords the way they were taught in greek/ mediterranean and middle eastern music. Its the way modes in the east and west are conveyed to students as far as I have seen.

@brio9282
Жыл бұрын
Blue dots: E string Orange dots: A string Each dot is a finger 1 to 4 The pattern of small and big gaps between the dots (fingers) are the half- and whole steps. In the upper example the orange dots would be C D Eb F and the blue dots C Bb Eb F which form a c-minor scale which that passage consists of. This way you can simply look at the dots and place your fingers accordingly without caring about which position you're in etc.

I've been struggling on this passage for MONTHS, especially the last part of it with thr G octave. I'm struggling with clarity & intonation as I play faster especially in higher positions because it's hard for my finger to press fully down on the string. How can I achieve a clear strong tone up there? Also, is it wise to practice these as scales?

Hi! I'm sorry, I'm confused. I don't understand the first dotted example 0:32. I hear a C, Bflat, Aflat, G or whole step, whole step, half step on the E string and see blue dots that look like half step, whole step, whole step. Next, I hear F, Eflat, D, C on the A string or whole step, half step, whole step. That corresponds to the lower row of orange dots. Aren't the blue dots misplaced?🎃 Nevertheless, if I did understand it correctly, this is a method I will be happy to try. Thank you.

Hi Andrea - make sure you read it as if you were looking at the violin from above. So, the dot furthest to the right is the highest note (the first note, in that case). I should have super imposed a picture of the fingerboard on top of that!

Color coding notes?? That's what the half-tone brackets are for, dude.
@DanielKurganov
Жыл бұрын
Bracket / V markings don’t achieve what this does. This is the shortest path to an instant visual understanding of an interval pattern across all strings, because it doesn’t require mnemonic translation. Also, it takes the smallest amount of real estate to draw, and doesn’t force the eyes to travel. Additionally, the color (which was just used to distinguish different strings for demo purposes) isn’t important to the method.

@@DanielKurganov I'm sorry. I'm just messing with you, man. Your Vivaldi is pretty good, just clean up that trill on a high C 🙂 But seriously, do you really believe this method will help an intermediate violin player to clean up their intonation? In my book, it's scales, scales, and more scales that do the trick. Good luck and goodbye.
@DanielKurganov

@@peterburandt4586 it’s just something that helped me a lot when I was too lazy to improve my sight-reading. Turns out it had a lasting effect to train visualization of interval patterns and how the fingers look on the fingerboard. engaging all of the ’senses’ is the key to memorization and fluency on stage. See, hear, feel, visualize… people learn differently, so for people who are not visual or in the low in spatial awareness, maybe it won’t be useful. But it helped me and many others 🤷♂️

Modes. That is all.
@DanielKurganov
2 жыл бұрын
You missed the point, which is that it's about visualizing and chunking patterns of any kind, not just modes. The Vivaldi passages happen to be modal, but if you look Prokofiev Concertos or Sonatas, you have scales that are not of any particular mode or tonality, but rather a mix. Or Ysaye Sonatas, which have geometric and not tonal/modal patterns (Sonata 3 and 5 especially). So, the exact nature of the harmonic content is actually irrelevant. If anything, it's more about tetrachords, on the music-theory front, and not modes per se. Anyway, hope it was useful :)
@davidramos4707
2 жыл бұрын
Studying modes covers about 99% of violin repertoire. They need to make a comeback.
@DanielKurganov
2 жыл бұрын
@@davidramos4707 not sure I agree with that :) but yes, modes can be useful for sure. It’s simply a different way of hearing. It’s like knowing a tune a few different ways. I think on the technical/physical front it’s more useful to think in tetrachords instead of full scales. But in the end you do whatever works gives you results. All of our brains are wired somewhat differently.
