An oldheads' trick of cleaning up carbon from your engine is to introduce water into the combustion chamber, a popular trick back during the days of carburetion. While a good run around the twisties is a good way of cleaning carbon from your engine, we decide to experiment with a more hands on approach.
Science Nerds Section:
Steam quite literally takes up 1000x more physical space than water. When water enters the engine bay (ideally as a mist), the water droplets quickly vaporize into steam in contact with the carbon caked engine internals, knocking off carbon from the metallic surfaces. This is why engines with blown head gaskets end up with clean internals.
