Ma’am on what basis I would identify this sentence as participle ? “Sleeping out of the blanket, I crept up to the bed”?
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
2 жыл бұрын
Identify the phrase (Sleeping out of the blanket). Does it have a verb? It is followed by a pronoun "I" isn't it? So it is not the subject of a verb. It is telling us more about the pronoun. I who had been sleeping out ..... It is a participle. If it had been a gerund, the sentence would have been Sleeping out of the blanket is a common problem for me. I have done a vidoe on how to tell the difference between a participle and gerund. Go to my playlist and find it.

Are there two types of present participle? If so, what is the difference? one takes "Comma" while the other takes "And" please explain? she opened the door, Rania saw all her friends. = Opening the door, she saw all her friends. She heard the news and fainted. hearing the news, she fainted. I heard the phone ring and picked it up. Hearing the phone ring, I picked it up.

Present participles are words ening in -ing. They make 1. present continuous tense with the auxiliaries to be (is are was were will be / or modal + be ). 2. gerunds - ing word that is a noun (subject/object of verb or object of preposition) 3. adjectives coming before or after nouns to describe or modify them. Your query of comma and and is not about participles but about how a participle makes a compound sentence into a simple one. Opening the door, she saw her friends = simple sentence. She opened the door and she saw her friends = compound sentence. Remember both clauses joined by 'and' you must have its own subject and verb. i heard the phone and picked it up is a simple sentence. Hearing the phone, I picked it up = simple sentence. I heard the phone and I picked it up is a compound sentence.

I feel for you. Start at basics. My book Grammar with Ease costs Rs 200/- Watch my hindi video on parts of speech, then phrases and then clauses. You will get it. If you don't spend any money (tuitions don't come free) you will end up spending thousands later in some classes. So be smart. Start working. If you don't know anything, you cannot possibly prepare in 3 weeks, so just start now and may be the final exams you will be ready.

What kind of clauses ? And what they describing destroying ,causin,killing, g? A fire broke out in a Syrian refugee camp in eastern Lebanon on Wednesday, destroying 93 tents in the town of Arsal, causing the displacement of around 100 Syrian families. A farm tractor trolley carrying Hindu pilgrims has overturned and fallen into a pond in northern India, killing 26 people, including children, say local officials
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher
Жыл бұрын
all of them are participles, hence they contribute to the phrase not the clause. You can expand them into adjectival clauses 'which destroyed', 'which caused' etc. The same for carrying... and killing has overturned has a helper and is therefore a verb.
@mahamedyasin1847
Жыл бұрын
Mom thanks a lot your quick response but i have one question please answer to me second sentence participle phrase for example e.g a farm tractor....didn't return to subject main verb but refers like place. killing 26 people = where they died 26 rather than which killed =killing
@mahamedyasin1847
Жыл бұрын
@@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher you said participle's actions always refers back to the subject i agree the frist sentence refers back to subject but the second sentence not to seem subject. why? It's like e.g ... , killing 26 people = where they died 26 people why didn't refer back to subject A farm tractor
