It's okay just say it! USGS got caught napping on this one. Just yesterday USGS said there was no danger of an eruption.

Actually the USGS guy mentioned that they were planning to put out a heightened advisory over the weekend to be put out Monday (today). Of course, Sunday night events pretty much preempted that. It's not exactly like they didn't completely expected this to happen. Even I, a native of Oʻahu, have been noticing an increase of activity reported over the course of the past week and a half and I suspected that something is coming up. I too just didn't expect it so soon. I figured something were to happen around midweek based on the steadily increasing numbers and frequency of earthquake swarms that has been building up over the past week and the increased rates of ground inflation/deflation cycles of the local area.

I literally saw this eruption coming 3 weeks ago. You could see the disturbance in the magma chamber 30km deep followed by a disturbance at the Kilauea caldera. Magma was obviously on the move weeks ago. If USGS was paying attention, this was almost exactly how it happened in 2018. The USGS needs to get their act together if they did not see what an amateur like me saw... I was wondering why the HVO did not raise the alert level to yellow weeks ago. They are lucky this thing has not caused any damage, at least not yet.

Why did you not alert them of your suspicions when you realized an eruption was imminent, when the professional scientists in charge of observation had failed to take notice? Thats your duty as a human being, to do the right thing. Admitting that you knew this would happen beforehand and also admitting that you did nothing about it puts the same responsibility for negligence on you. Yes, they shouldve been able to predict this or at least project a hightened probability but as an individual "ameture" if you intelligently made a calculable prediction based on scientific observation then you shouldve considered sharing your hypothesis with scientists and with the public.

@@777Macau you may be right to a certain unfortunate extent. I understand that academia is reluctant to accept anything outside mainstream ideas, especially when coming from somebody with no credentials. But there is magic in the weight of words and there are reputable scientists who still have an open mind and are willing to second guess themselves or drove over old data or even look deeper into the hypothesis of non-academic sources. Sometimes theres. alot at stake and you just have to be the person who writes emails to many different people and agencies and academic collabs until you find one that bites. Sometimes its worth being wrong because being right is worse.

He answered them, and they were correct answers according to science and the current state of knowledge. Despite claims about Dutchsinse, quakes cannot be predicted. They can predict probable locations and causes, but not exact times. A lava flow is much bigger than humans can direct with bulldozed channels. It’s been tried, and failed.

Dutchsense gets all his data from the USGS. He's a paranoid prepper who thinks they are out to get him. He doesnt predict earthquakes. Deep quakes result in shallow quakes that's all he knows. He watches patterns emerge, but he doesn't predict where they will actually happen unless saying somewhere in the China Sea Region where quakes happen daily. The real issue is he bites the hands that feed him. Meaning he attacks the very people he gets his data from.

Easier said than done to redirect a lava flow. The Icelanders has tried, and apart from a few minor victories, usually has resulted in failures. Remember redirecting a lava flow is not like redirecting a stream or river. Lava is way more heavier than water, way hotter than almost anything we can build, way more volume than we can handle. Remember lava is liquiefied rock, with all of its mass still intact. We need lots of time to effect the needed changes in the topology of the land, certes more time than what a lava flow would take to get there. Remember current tech doesn't allow us to predict where where the lava will first come out. Then the window of time from initial emergence to predict and react to the flow direction before it arrives is tiny. Of necessity it's only enough time to warn people to get out of the way. Property and possessions can eventually be replaced, live are not replaceable. If the lava flow moves at the max recorded speeds (17 mph/27 kmh) it will tend to be a narrow flow with great speed and mass behind it. It would punch thru anything we can build. Even if we were to manage to slow it down, it would then just spread out over a larger area and then be much harder, if not impossible, to contain it at all. Personally, I'd prefer a fast flow that just cut a thin line thru an area and largely leave the rest of an area alone rather than slow it down and have it wipe out an entire region.

The 2018 event was not an "eruption," it was a leak of over century old lava (identified by USGS personnel during the "eruption") from the Halemaumau magma chamber, said to have been initiated by fracking of the Halemaumau "hot spot" for steam geothermal power generation. Collapse of the Halemaumau walls occured as the old lava drained into the rift zone

Generally the possible ranges of the ash/gas movements is predicated on the prevailing winds direction. In this case it's mostly the trade winds. In general the trades trends a south westerly direction, with possible variations from south south east to south west west. Keep in mind directions outside that range are still possible, but are commensurately less likely the further away it gets from the south west direction.

The USGS and HVO have been watching this all year, and everything that I have seen, which has only been the videos they have released and been put up on KZitem, has said to me that this was going to happen soon, as in some time in the next 12 to 18 months, and that was back in May. Of course they are never going to give actual, exact times, one because that is still currently impossible to do with anything remotely like accuracy, and two, given that they are government agencies there are issues of possible legal liability and general trust that are more than just a little nasty. Of course whashisnam can say it will happen at whatever time, because he isn't a government or person of authority, he's just some schlub on the internet who can say whatever he wants to with no repercussions. Not his fault (generally) if a bunch of idiots get all hot and bothered by what he says and maybe run off when they don't need to and waste thier time and money. Not his fault (usually) any time he says anything that doesn't agree with whatever is being said officially, even if/when it leads to loss of time/money/property or even life. Fault of the people who listened to him. But he has a right to be loud and stupid, and the others have a right to follow and be stupid. Doesn't mean we have to like it. Also doesn't mean he knows what's going on any better than anyone else does, he just had the luxury of saying something that the Government could not. And he got lucky.
