I didn’t read through all the comments but wanted to add that donut shops-and bakeries including grocery stores and Walmart-are an excellent source for buckets. They are icing buckets and usually less than 5 gallon. 3 gallon is common. But they usually sell them with a lid for a dollar or two. My guy makes me a deal if I buy all they have. They’ve very sturdy, with the plastic style handle like the buckets in this video. Greetings from Poteau, OK. Keep at it Leon!

I love your use of cans, I never thought of that! When I make 5 gallon bucket into a wicking pot, I trim the lip off a 3 gallon icing bucket, invert it, cut slots in the bottom and use that as the reservoir. For 55 gallon and IBC totes I use inverted 5 gallon buckets. I find cutting slots rather eliminates the need to use weed cloth. I don't care to use anything as thin walled as water and pop bottles, I find then too weak. If I can figure a quick/easy way to put a slot into a glass bottle, they will be come my favorite, as they are plentiful and totally inert. I've tried a form of in the ground wicking by burying a 5 gallon wicking bucket under a transplanted tree. The idea is to give the tree an artificial reservoir to tap, while also allowing it to seek ground water. Too soon to report results.

A more natural method is to put sticks and twigs in a layer on the bottom instead of the cans. It will give you the air spaces that the plants need. Cover with a plastic top when extra heavy rain is in the forecast. Safer for your family to recycle the plastic bottles and cans.

hi Leon applying your wicking method has revolutionized my entire garden operation and i thank you for that. I notice you have produced a lot of videos on the subject which are very informative, but a bit overwhelming for some of the newbies i am trying to encourage. (too much info overload) I hope you would consider producing one short video I can direct people to that explains the layers as briefly as possible. Another point i would like to ask about is that In some of your videos you have used weedguard membrane and not in others i am having difficulty understanding this. Why use expensive weedguard if there is no need ? yours gratefully Jordie of UK

Love the care for the Whale and our Oceans. Stop buying individual bottles, buy a crock dispenser 45.00 from Walmart.com and refill a 3-5 gallon jug of water to sit on top. I worried about cleaning it...mold, etc. Guess what, it's been 7 years and the inside of the crock is as clean as the 1st day I used it. I guess our me-maws & pa paws knew more than people today. The crock stays cool. So buy once, Re-fill the water bottles. Cheaper, cheaper, neater.

GREAT VIDEO - Just making sure that I do NOT need to put cloth over the Water jugs in the 5 gallon bucket correct? 1 Gallon with drilled holes top & bottom & 4 plastic soda bottles with caps & holes top & bottom, then the bucket gets about a 5/8" hole o its side 5" up . Place the gallon & 4bottles in with PVC pipe then add soil as mentioned then use PVC pipe to fill with water until it over flows out the side of bucket. Correct ?

My question is, how do you tell when it needs water? Unlike the set up with two buckets and the reservoir on the bottom, I can't tell when it needs water. And doesn't the soil below the drain hole become a soggy swamp?

Amend the soil and to avoid disease, practice crop rotation techniques. For nutrients, I create a compost tea by placing dried leaves in sealed plastic containers (free, courtesy of my local grocery store's Deli and Bakery) filled with rainwater. I do this in October and the tea is ready by March. No greens and only sealed containers. Unless you want a stink war with the county's largest dairy farm...

This is great but I have a curious question about the 2 holes in the bottles/cans/jugs. Wouldn't the soil get in those holes? Especially the jugs' top holes cuz it's almost facing directly up.
