Just got one at a yard sale. It'll make an excellant wall hanger.

Thanks for this. Mousy gave me a good chuckle. From what I’ve seen, it may be easiest to crosscut the bale.

Nice! It's quite a workout to use, but they cut pretty cleanly once you get the technique down.

Wouldn't surprise me none it your dad kept that as a antique. Cuz I'll bet he knew something like might come in need in the future, which has proved it..lol but I think yer right that hay knife originally was made to cut loose hay piles apart. But by keeping it sharp and taken care of it should do the job fine. But inerways that's my opinion other than that good video of that :).

I have one of these that I got from my mother. She had no idea what it was, but I wanted to know what it was, so I took it. The bits the handles were attached to are ruined--rusted or broken off--but I could tell that those were where the handles went. I've looked online for a couple of years, trying to think of a search term that would bring me the info, but until today, the closest I got was a photograph that included two of them without a description, on a site dedicated to scythes. My parents used to have a scythe, but I think it went away many years ago. I suspect my father got it from his, since my grandfather quit farming at least fifty-five years ago (he was letting a neighbor down the road use the back two acres by the mid-sixties), so he would've had no further use for it. Oh, and this one is clearly not intended to be sharp. The blade is thick, and the edges squared off. I suspect it would've been much more work to use than the one in this video.

Trying to figure out if I should buy one from ebay to cut round bales. Your video has left me still undecided. They aren't expensive though. I could just buy one and let it become a wall hanger if it doesn't work.

I was too worried about you slicing up the kitten to enjoy the video.
