It's the first time I understand how ACT mechanism is working. Thanks mister.

Yes, ACT still confuses me quite a bit but I am understanding more as I work with it. One of the things to keep in mind is that the plugin or virtual instrument HAS TO HAVE FOCUS to trigger the corresponding ACT assignments. I also use Bome MIDI Translator to create virtual MIDI ports so that I can map one of them to be associated with ACT without it conflicting with other MIDI controls. I will work on providing more details as I can. I am so glad this was helpful for you. Thanks for the kind support.

Big thanks Simeon - just starting out but your video put it all in perspective - I have a Novation 49 launchkey mk3 - thanks to your video I was able to start to make the missing features work correctly - beginning with the transport buttons. I am looking forward to making it function to the best of my ability. I had searched forums and even emailed Novation support - and they had no solution.

My pleasure! One thing to remember when assigning a controller to ACT is that it will take over that controller so if you assign the Mod Wheel to an ACT function, there is a possibility it will not appear to work on other tracks. I am experimenting on a workaround that involves using virtual MIDI ports through Bome Midi Translator. Also there appears to be an update to Cakewalk by BandLab that will help improve functionality even more. Stay tuned.

Hi! great video, maybe you know a way to assign velocity to a midi cc controller ? I can assign everything but not velocity
@PraiseTracks
2 ай бұрын
Velocity is a part of a MIDI NOTE, BUT, you can possibly do it using something like a MIDI Translator, where if it see a certain velocity it can then generate a specified controller message and data. What might you be looking to do in particular?

This video is an absolute treasure! I have been trying to find ways to map my midi controller and faders in cakewalk. I have a question though, it's pretty straightforward to map/assign faders to ch1 and ch11 for automating orchestral arrangements in Logic and Cubebase, but I cannot find the equivalences to ch1 & ch11 in Cakewalk when following this video to try ACT out (I us a Korg Nanokontrol 2). Could you please help me to find a resolution? Thank you so much!

Thanks so much for the kind words. I am still learning more about how to use ACT myself 🤓 So most of the time When I am using virtual instruments like Spitfire Player and Kontakt libraries, I do not use ACT at all, but rather the MIDI LEARN functions of the instrument. There are also ways to remap the nanoKONTROL itself to have the faders different CC numbers. ACT is really the most useful for me when using it with mapping audio effects. Thanks again, there is so much out there to learn. All the best.

Great vid. Clears up a bunch of questions. Question: How do you have your video/DAW/Audio setup? I keep trying to make videos like this and my DAW audio doesn't feed into the recording, or my voice/mic, etc. Any help is appreciated. Cheers

I am so glad this was helpful for you. I am currently using a couple of things as far as audio capture along with OBS Studio to do livestreams and video recordings. Many current audio interfaces include a LOOPBACK channel that allows you to mix your audio sources to a video capture or livestream platform (Skype, Disocrd, etc.), along with that I also use VOICEMEETER to help manage various audio devices as well as capturing the audio using its built-in recorder. Let me know a little bit more about your setup and I will see how I might be able to assist further. Thanks for watching.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. I could set ACT to control Cakewalk but always had and issue with VSTs. The fact that the plugin has to be in focus to control it via ACT is the key info I was missing. At the same time, this limitation is very frustrating - is there a workaround?
@PraiseTracks
4 жыл бұрын
I do not think there is a workaround for this, as I would think the assignment would have to have some way to persist throughout the project. There is also a possibility of having other plugins assigned and could introduce conflicts. If you could call it a workaround then recording the automation into a track would be the closest thing. I will continue looking into this. Thanks so much for watching, and I am so glad it was helpful.

So Robert, I have been thinking more on this issue and I think I have indeed found a workaround of sorts. If you have seen the channel I have recently discovered Unify which is a plugin host and library for other plugins. I am going to try something today and if it works could really be a game changer. I will keep you posted.

Hey. Wonder if some workaround has been found... New to this topic, but trying to control multiple instances of a pitch shifter vst from an external controler. So far, it's quite frustrating. Although it should be possible since the plugins expose their own parameters and cakewalk does it well through automation...

@@PraiseTracks I gave up using ACT because it seems it controls only the plugin that has focus. I'm trying to control two instances of ElasticPitchV2 from the Pure Data application (similar to MAX MSP). I just found out my workaround by adding automation lines for each plugin (targeting the desired parameter) and adding a "remote control" (right click...) on the automation line. I choose control changes 50 and 51 for instance.

Hello, Simeon. I recently bought the studiologic Sl mixface, and was wondering if you knew if it is possible to connect it to Cakewalk Bandlab? I got it to use with my SL88 Grand.
@PraiseTracks
3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible, I am just not sure the best route to take. I am also trying to get a MIXFACE to test here as well. Depending on the compatibility, you could use the Mackie protocol, or the Generic Control Surface profile. I am still learning the benefits and limitations of ACT, while it is very powerful you have to get things set up correctly first or you could run into conflicts later. I will do some more research on this end and see what more I can find out, Thanks for watching. All the best.

Hmm... Didn't work at all for me. ACT only controls the speed knobs on the Leslie and only "slow speed" and "fast speed" show up in the ACT controller even when I choose just..."speed" as an automation parameter on the audio track where the Leslie is plugged in in the effects bay and bring the Leslie into focus while I'm trying to edit these things and I get zero sound change i.e., the Leslie doesn't change speed at all with the mod wheel. Tried this several times, paused and examined the ACT parameters...same as mine EXCEPT, again..."speed" shows up nowhere as an option in the ACT midi controller. Correction. ACT only changes the percentage of control on the control knobs of the Leslie from minus 20% to plus 20% without actually flipping the "Slow/Fast" switch at all. Followed these instructions to the letter many times...same result. Nada.

Desmond, sorry you are having trouble. I had not looked at this in a while but just pulled it up after getting home. I am currently running the latest release of Cakewalk by BandLab and loaded the VST3 (also works with VST2) TRacks Leslie. It seems that the control you are looking for is tucked into the following CELL in the ACT controller window: TOP ROW BANK 4 Cell R6 I just tried this and it seems to be working. I am also able to write automation data into a track using the MIDI slider controller assigned to that particular parameter. I need to refresh myself on how ACT is functioning in the newer versions of Cakewalk. Also, I will see if I can put together something to show you what I just did. Thanks for watching.

Absolutely, it is Cakewalk’s way of tying MIDI controllers into softsynths and effects. It has a lot of potential but can be finicky at times but once you get things going it is great.
