Seemingly simply, but actually invaluable! Thanks Aaron and the entire SketchUp team.

Well that helps Arron, and I like it. I’ve been doing basically the same as you demonstrate but I was raising the swing component up 1/128” off the floor so it wouldn’t share the same space as the floor. Now I can illuminate the raising part.

PERFECT! Been having this exact hassle. Also really liked the shift-erase=hide. Been using SU since v1 @Last days and have never caught that! Instead I’ve been right-clicking my brains out to hide things

A Send Foreword or Send Backward priority would sort the Z fighting, let the user decide which surface has priority as many other graphic apps have

Thanks Aaron, not a specific problem to me, but a nice solution for another issue I had.

Z-fighting comes from 3D graphics rendering. During rendering, every primitive has an x,y,z coordinates. Traditionally the z coordinate holds the value for the distance of the primitive from the "camera". If two have the same (or very close) z values, the renderer does not know which one to show. Expanded over two surfaces, each "pixel" is rendered essentially randomly, resulting in the flickering patterns.

Thx 🙏 a lot Aaron! Helpful!!! Q: How to avoid that a copied element when modifying it does not modify the original?

Would grouping alone solve the problem without making the surface see through?

Thought I was coming here for a video on materials like glass or lexan--I was wrong but still learned something. A kin to finding out about reverse faces (y)

Thanks Aaron, I usually put the 2D-components on a TAG called 2D. I not like to see 2D line work when put materials on surfaces.

Why not use the Hide command on both (line and surface)? I think this is easier for the rendering engine, rather than dealing with a transparent material.

Hide is best used as a temporary tool (hiding one group so you can work on the group behind it, then I hide). Due to the lack of controls with hide, it is not something you want to use long term.

but you made it a component :) I just lift the door swing 1cm above the floor, no need for a surface.. (goes into a "2D-plan" tag) mainly because I am concerned about all the additional overhead a surface adds to the model... not unusual to have 500 doors in a highrise model.. I have found even 2d linework disappears when on a 3d surface,, might be a graphic card problem.. but separating their z heights avoids that problem.. PS, I use "erase Stray lines" option very carefully

Why not just group (or component) the 2 lines? Will "clean-up" delete them if they have been grouped or component-atized? *
@gusbert
3 жыл бұрын
If a group consists of just lines, like the door arc and straight line, CleanUp will remove it. You can un-check "Erase stray edges", which will leave such groups intact, but that somewhat defeats the purpose of running CleanUp in the fist place! Even if you group the stray lines into a group inside a group, CleanUp still removes them.

Thanks Aaron, can you tell me where to find and how to use “clean up” please. I sometimes find I’ve picked a line (turns blue) then I erase it but it still shows. Only way I seem to get rid of it is to come out of file and go back in. Is there an easy refresh button ? I’m new to this so please excuse my lack of knowledge. Learning every day tho with your great tutorials.

Here you find the extension Cleanup. You need to make a free account before you can download it. sketchucation.com/pluginstore?listtype=2&author=1161&category=0

@Norman PMFJI I think he was talking about the “Clean Up” extension. You have to install separately from SU... just go to the extension warehouse and search, it’ll pop up.
