There are Voltmeter modules for ~ $1 Aliexpress that can work off the battery under test and work down to 2.5V - good enough to tell if a 3V coin cell is dead. Other modules can measure down to 0V if powered externally with ~5V. Great idea / packaging, but I was hoping for more than just a voltmeter testing cells under no load.

I would eliminate the diode for polarity protection by using an edge contact and a face contact for the battery. in the event you put the battery in the slot in the wrong orientation both contacts would be touching the same pole of the battery and thus no voltage across the contacts. this would eliminate having to account for a diode drop which could vary with temperature and time.

That's actually not a bad idea. I would worry that the thinner batteries could still short given the fact you could slot them at angle. Granted I haven't tested the box in more robust temperatures but despite the diode the readings were more accurate than I initially anticipated hence sticking with this at the end.

I believe Most battery testers put a small load on the battery being tested. That might give you more accurate results. The tester I have puts roughly a 5 ohm resistor across the battery.

That's an amazing idea. I am not that much familiar with battery capacity testers. I would really appreciate it if you could clarify one concept. Based on my understanding, batteries have some regenerative capabilities due to the chemical properties of their contents. Sometimes it's not enough to just monitor the voltage of the battery. That's why, in many cases, I have seen people use a constant current load with it to measure the capacity. Does the diode with the series resistor perform the same task or is it just a voltage divider with reverse polarity protection? Thanks.

When load is applied to the battery the voltage can dip significantly. Once load is removed the battery "recovers" some of that drop. Monitoring voltage of the battery gives you a good ballpark figure for single use batteries where cells are unlikely to abused by charging. Load testing would be more recommend for rechargeable battery. You could apply small resistance to see how much voltage drops ... You'll have to modify the code provided in the description to account for a small voltage drop across the resistor.
