I used this idea when I was sewing the elastic to the top of a pair of leggings. I used to line up the elastic with the edge of the fabric and zigzag on my sewing machine, followed by coverstitching, but it never looked very professional inside. Today I placed the elastic 1/4" down from the top edge and then serged like you did here. It looked great! Thanks for the tip!

That’s great that you use elastic thread but for me this worked out better because I sew in bulk and constantly winding bobbins didn’t work. Thru the years I’ve learned so many helpful tricks myself, the internet has helped us all hone what we love to do. I just recently, (like in the last year), learned a great way to get very pointed collars on dress shirts. I am amazed!!!! As the saying goes, we’re never too old to learn.

So in looking at this again, I think I understand what you did. You sewed the elastic on using a sewing machine, stretching it to the max, using a zig zag stitch, and having the elastic 1/4” away from the edge. Then you went back and serges over it, cutting off the 1/4” at the top. I understand also you used both needles. Do I have this right? I’m working on a pair of baby bloomers and I want to learn this the right way-Your way! Thanks!

Thank you for this video! I'm trying to figure out the best way to add ruching onto the sides of a long top. If you want front and back gathered, is there a way to do this only using a serger? I can gather on the serger changing the needle tensions, but then have trouble getting the elastic onto the gathers neatly - to stabilize and prevent the gathering shifting around. Maybe the sewing machine is easiest to control to get the elastic on and the fabric gathered, and that is why I don't see anyone trying to gather two layers on the serger and apply elastic simultaneously - or after??? I'm studying store bought clothing with ruching along the seams and it really looks like it was all done in one fell swoop! Thanks for any help!

I think the ruching technique you're referring to takes the elastic thread which you would zigzag on the fabric to get the gathered look.

@@jeanetteweger5518 oooh, i hadn't thought to try using wooly nylon. If I set my brother 1034 serger up to have tensions 9,7,4,4, diff feed at 2, and longest stitch, it gathers up a layer or two of fabric beautifully (!), but the gathering can slide around after. I just tried another idea: zigzaging the two layers together at the edge to keep them united and the lower one not slipping about, and THEN gathered them on the serger as described above WITH elastic on the edge and it worked BUT the top bit curls around after it goes through, and can get caught up in the machine so you have to hold that back, while tugging on the elastic, while directing the fabric through. Still, it's the most success I've had so far. Thank you for your amazingly fast reply!

Can this be used to attach a knit bodice to a skirt when the pattern does not call for elastic? I'm struggling to get rid of the lumps and bumps when I use clear elastic or skip it and am wondering if your elastic gathering on the skirt would be a good option to try.
