I have become really into Blue Cat stuff because as a guitar and bass player I was watching Sonic talk podcast and Rich Hilton was talking about the re guitar by Blue cat which allows you to try different pick up's and sounds so I got their axe bundle that has Axiom, patchwork, destructor and a few other things as well as re guitar. So being able to use patchwork with my Amplitube 5 and Tonex vst and vst 3 there isn't a amp and stomp sound I can't get and at an awesome price. Your videos make it easier to understand the thing of recording and mixing that is sometimes over my head. Thanks so much.

Hi Warren. I just wanted to say thank you for these wonderful videos. I did quite a bit of sound production and engineering a long time ago but then my life went in something of a different direction and so had to stop. However, I'm definitely feeling the itch to get back into it and your videos have been exactly what I've needed, both to inspire me but also to get my confidence back. Keep up the amazing work - You have a new fan!

the good thing about vst plug-ins is its real good for on the go ,, working in the box when your not in the studio,, maybe your on vacation but you still dabble on a track ,, your laptop and the vst helps you pre filter , eq, ect .. so when you get in the studio you can decide eather to keep that setting or run it thrue another studio filter , you can even use the vst and run it thrue as is thrue the studio filters and eq,, to achieve a unique sound or functions

Cakewalk CA-2A has been released recently. It does really great job on lead vocals. I also love Optron 3A compressor on bass and TDR Kotelnikov on drum and master buss. These are 3 compressors are causing me to put away some analog stuff I used back in a day. I've always liked digital EQs and gates with pre-open, but I used to struggle with compression a bit (digital compression tend to sound artificial). Nowadays I can just take these 3 plugins and do all the stuff without sacrificing the sound.

Another tasty VST plugin is the Variety of Sound BootEQ MKII. It's a great EQ with a preamp section for a nice tonal color. They also make a really good channel strip plugin called the NastyVCS. That one is another fun one to play with. It's got a preamp/saturation section an EQ, a Compressor and a nice limiter.

That PatchWork thing is very interesting. I saw so many free VST only plugins that I wanted to try but couldn't, I wished something like this existed. I'm considering buying it. Great video as always Warren. I'll certainly be checking out that Limiter No.6, as well as all the other plug-ins you've used here. The track sounded massive with those plug-ins in place, especially those drums. It's like you're in the room with the drummer. The warmth and "imperfections" these introduce just sound amazing as well. If you're using Cakewalk's Sonar (PC only folks), you don't actually need PatchWork if you're connecting plugins in series, as Sonar has "FX Chains" that do that out of the box. Use them all the time. I'm going to have start using Addictive Drums a lot more with these plugins too instead of turning to trusty 909 samples :)

It seems to be good stuff from Blue Cat's. I hope they have AU versions besides VST. I use Logic Pro and Ableton Intro version for special things. It has lots of Fx's but only a 3-band EQ so I use Apple's AU multi-band EQ on that. You really drive it to maximum velocity on that combo compressor. Being free plug-ins it's glorious. Thanks for the upload, it was all news for me.

Hi warren I actually do clinics and masterclasses for Blue cat audio and other plugin companies. Over to the right side of the parallel if you see where it says average you can turn that to sum so it just sums up all the channels so you can actually use it as having one channel with no processing just on and you can use the volume knobs on the output of each parallel out to control the amount each send it mixed with the original.

Awesome thanks Warren. One thing though, since you are onto VST's in general, I would love to see if you can get the 'Toraverb' Space Modulated Reverb VST to load, function and be removed. I was disappointed when it crashed as I tried browse and options. I know, I know, as the AU works fine I should just use that but the attitude of the writers was just that I should give up and just use the one that worked but, if I leave the files in place my DAW reinstalls even the faulty ones each time I scan for a new one, so I have to move them to a holding folder which is all a pain in the butt. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Cheers Richard

Hey Warren, Not having Pro Tools I've HAD to hunt down viable plug ins for the past six months. I got very lucky and found a YT Video that hipped me to the Limiter 6. That is an amazing plug in. Unfortunately it's too powerful for me to use on my little laptop. Running all four sections is not possible but I still keep it for when the day comes when I can buy a real powerful Server/Tower system to run say Pro Tools and other stuff. I was kind of surprised you didn't run mjuc and limiter 6 together as mjuc is so good it seems to me it would eliminate the need to use the compressor on the L6 but I don't know. Question: Is the "Red" plug in you were using in the video (from acoustica??) a clone/model of the Red Plug in that focusrite includes with their interfaces? I'm asking because I'm waiting on delivery of a focusrite 2i2 right now which includes the Scarlett Suite of plug ins aka Red Suite. Are we talking about the same general emulations as the original hardware? Thanks buddy and as always: "Have a Bodacious Day." :-)

Hi +Martin Weeks Thanks for the great comment! I really appreciate all of your great comments! I didn't use the MJUC because it's not free and I was showcasing free VST plug ins with the Patchwork (which of course isn't free but amazing nonetheless). Of course the jr is great but the full MJUC with the additional controls is amazing! I don't think the Focusrite RED is the same, the Red here is supposedly based somewhat on the original Abbey Road consoles, at least that's what I've been led to believe! Ha Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Audio Acustica made a free "homebrew eq" recently (i have no idea what a homebrew eq is,but got alot of people excited about it) . Plug in is called Ochre www.acustica-audio.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=137&category_id=50&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=189#gallery . The only issue i have is it's glitchy for me when moving the sliders and my cpu would jump just by moving them which is really annoying. Sounds really good though and i think i herd it's a master EQ which I feel i would use it for that reason. The interesting thing about audio acustica's plug ins i the ability to mess with the .xml files change the default latency and even the convolution/FFT emulation values which is some really nerdy stuff and can mess you up if don't have a back up ( i mess with the latency because it's too high at default for a performance and doesn't make a big difference in cpu, the other stuff i stay away from because trying to getting higher quality convolution and less FFT emulation eats alot of CPU and drives me mad trying to find the perfect setting lol).

This is direct from the Bluecat website, talking about this plug-in: "Typical applications: Plug-ins host, custom channel strip, parallel processing, effects chainer, virtual bussing, VIRTUAL INSTRUMENT, share bus and plug-ins configurations between DAWs, VST or Audio Unit to AAX, Audio Unit, RTAS plug-in adapter, effect chains A/B comparison, standalone audio processing application, multi effects processor." So it certainly appears that yes, you can run VST instruments in it. There is a demo version available free of charge, so why not download that and try it?
