This is so cool. I recently told my husband that I usually relate everything I'm learning to a movie I've seen. Can you explain this more, give examples, etc., of how you actually do this with different scriptures? I used to have a really good memory, but after I got COVID, things changed. Any information or explanation you can give would be helpful. Thank you for sharing.

@@shellimccormack I’ve shared some screenshots of the word associations I use in the social media group, which is free for anyone to sign up. But the short version is: 1) Choose a book, or section of verses to memorize. 2) Choose a movie or tv show with enough characters as are chapters in the book you want to memorize. 3) Assign each chapter a different character. 4) Have a method, like the major system, that you can use to convert numbers to images. (Josh goes over the major system in separate videos and a memorizer champion Ron White has other videos on it too) 5) Then use the first few words of each verse to make an image combining with the character and object from the major system. 6) As you are learning the verse, visualize your images to help you get the first few words and I think you will find that once you know the first few words the rest will come. It takes a little time and some rote memorizing, but I’ve found it to work great for recall and knowing the reference. I’ll post some examples when I get home in a little bit.

So, for me, Colossians is the movie Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (as explained in the video). Chapter 3 is Zaphod Beeblebrox. The number 2 is a Swan (major system). For Colossians 3:2, I imagine Zaphod playing volleyball against a team of swans and the volleyball is a brain. He “sets” the brain and it keeps going up into space. “Set (volleyball move) your minds (brain) on things that are above (outer space), not on things that are on earth. The last part I just remember through rote. Although you can come up with images for every word, it quickly becomes harder to remember all the different images and the latter part goes away and just ends up wasting time coming up with the images.

Other examples: Philippians 2:9 “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,” Philippians is the show House, MD., chapter 2 is Dr. Wilson, 9 is soap (major system). So I picture Dr. Wilson on stage in a theater with a Theta (God) made out of soap in his hand and he is raising it up (highly) and a bunch of salt (exalted) gets poured out on him comically as he is trying to act. Romans 4:13 “For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.” Romans is just my favorite male actors (it was also my testing ground for the system) Chapter 4 is Ben Affleck, 13 is a dime (I know dime should probably be 10, but it follows the major system rules). So I imagine, Ben with a green (for) top hat (the) giving a key (promise) to Abe Lincoln (Abraham) in exchange for a dime (13) and a bunch of little kids with Abe Lincoln beards around hanging around him. Ephesians 1:15 “For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints,” Ephesians is the tv show “It’s Always sunny in Philadelphia”, chapter one is Charlie, 15 is a tool (a wrench usually). So, I think about a courtroom (for this reason (sounds like courtroom talk)) and wrenches set up a dominos (because) and they fall over and one hits Charlie in the eye (I).

I feel like this works really well for me. I am not much of a creative person to think up a memory palace. But I do love The Office. I think this idea and spin on memory palace will be beneficial for those like myself who are less creative but can remember movies/tv shows. Thanks for doing this both of you!

Thanks Zach, I've been toying with trying to take my encyclopedic knowledge of Seinfeld and apply it to Bible memory, so your video gave me a roadmap. Thanks!

I think there is a good joke somewhere about work being meaningless and the message in Ecclesiastes.

This is a really good idea! I love movies too and thanks for the idea of playing to your strengths. I think the mind palace is great, but I'm still trying to figure out more about because I've never heard of it before ! Thanks for continuing to encourage us, Josh in our journey with Bible Memory!! Ooh! Also, how can I share something directly with you Josh, like something that was shared with me concerning memorization? May I email it so you? It's only a short video survey! Talk to you soon. Blessings 🙏🏼

Mrs Schwab did raise children dippy enough to memorise 3 chapters. My mistake; 4 chapters. You can't forget the truth!
