Dan Sir, in 2021 this is so up there👍🏻 You have been such great help to all of us keen to do it right. My latest bike (Aprilia RSV4) uses Pirelli Super Corsa SP2, on a warm summer day in 2021, with tyre warmers, suspension tweaked by the one and only Race Lab trackside at BH, R 26psi/F 29psi cold and all I can is they are absolutely fantastic with lots of grip and good wear. It really is about getting the right tyre temp for that 'sandy beach' appearance. I have the new Michelin Power Cup 2s for 2022 which are much more track focused and just about road legal. Cheers

I recently purchased a used Ninja 400 with tires that were worn flat enough in the middle to be of concern. I replaced them with the same tires that originally came on it (Dunlop Sportsmax GPR 300’s) and took it out for a track day. These tires were pleasantly inexpensive. I had read that the stock tires on that bike were pretty good, and my track experience is pretty light so I thought they’d work just fine. I was tentative at first but once I got them scrubbed in I was riding confidently at my maximum level with no traction concerns whatsoever. I’ve been riding for many years and remember the bad old days of bias ply tire technology, primitive suspensions, and terrifying “hinge in the middle” handling. My opinion is that todays tires and todays bikes are unbelievably better over what we had in the past, and even garden variety replacement tires are quite suitable for a track day for most riders.

I like to ride first couple track days of the summer with road tires. Especially with big bike like my 1290 Super Duke it takes couple days to get the speed back after the summer so I am going pretty slowly and carefully. The first days are also so cold that I would probably have different compound for those than I am using later on the summer resulting more tires and more money spent. Street tires that I have are Metzeler M7 RR and the front tire feels almost as good as track tires but the rear is bit helpless with 180 hp and 145Nm :D I think I am about 4 seconds slower with the street tire so not that much. But somebody bit more skill and softer riding style would be easily able to ride those on fastest group. I also would like to add that the most important thing is not to run too old tires. It's not good idea to try safe some money by using 5 years old tires no matter what type they are.

Adding a vote for the Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa II. You can run them perfectly fine on the street (including in cold/wet/miserable due to the silica-biased mid-part), and they are more than good enough for intermediate track pace with their slick-like sidewalls. They also last very well, though I wouldn't go only by thread depth in judging wear. My view is 5 full days (6 x 20) of intermediate is enough (ask me how I know). This is w/o tyre warmers. Next season, I won't have any need to use my bike in cold/wet on the road anymore (other bike for that), and since I don't want to invest in rain track tyres I simply don't go if a booked trackday turns out to be a washout (it's money wasted but just no fun to go). As a result, I decided to "upgrade" to Supercorsa v3. I'm not expecting any additional grip leaned over (I believe that part is identical to the Corsa II), and likely couldn't exploit that anyway. But the one thing I'd discount the Corsa's for is that they do tend to 'wiggle' (and light up the TC which my bike has) in the transition from the slick side walls to the middle part. The SCs should fix that.
@lennardspit

I could've written that myself :D I also have experience with the Dunlop Dportsmart TTs which are also excellent. They are better for street riding than the Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2s, but are not as good in the rain because they don't have any silica at all.

I went from Q2 to Q3 to RS10 to a Dunlop DOT race tire (D311 I think?) then on a whim threw on S22s. Track day tires are amazing, but I never needed that much grip. And actual race tires need warmers which is a real pain if you're not at a track day or near your power. Plus both are only good for one track day (on a 1000). I'm a better rider now than I was then and I love shredding on the S22s, they're way cheaper, have tons of grip, last a couple track days, never need warmers, and are great in the wet.

I have been riding motorcycles for many many years but have never done a track day, but recently bought a 2017 Ducati 939 Supersport with 2159 km on it. the tires were changed in late 2021 and they are Pirelli Rossa lV tires. in my opinion they feel like very good tires. I feel like I can trust them on the street. but lately I have been trying to learn about the tire. and other tires that compete with them. for the day when I need to change them, and I am considering doing a track day for the first time. I have heard differences of opinions of how the Rossa 3 and Rossa 4 tires compare. one person on KZitem said the 4 is more track oriented. but the 3 is better in the rain, and another person said its just the newer version of the 3 with no real difference. I think the bike originally came with the Rossa 3 tires on it. I have also heard people on KZitem talk about how much they like the Michelin Road 5 and 6 tires. some say they are better than the Pirelli. do you have an opinion on that ? is there a difference between the 3 and 4. and also is there a difference between the Road 5 and 6. and how do the Pirelli tires compare to the Michelin's. and is there something else that is better than both of them. mainly for the street. but possibly some track days. I want confident inspiring grippy rubber. that hopefully also last a little while. and would handle a track day. I am also curious how long my Rossa lV tires would last on the track. is that calculated in hours on the track ? or in full days. how long is a typical track day ? do people pay for an hour or do they pay for a day. how does that work ?

The one thing you don't talk about here is the profile of the tyre. Some of the road focused tyres don't have anywhere near the kind of steep profile required for good lean angle and quick steering. A steep tyre like the pirelli supercorsa makes the bike tip in much more effortlessly and allows much greater lean angle before reaching the side of the tyre

I am using Dunlop D212 GP Racer on my Yamaha R6. Have used the Rosso Corsa and the Michelin Power RS but they did not offer me the same level of fee/confidence on the road as the Dunlop D212 when leaning. On the track, I have used slicks, which are a whole new level but in my opinion nothing beats a nice street "racing inspired" tyre like the Dunlop D212, the Pirelli Supercorsa, etc. Unless you hit wet roads/weather. Then it is like ice-skating. Again just my opinion, at beginner and intermediate level, the choice of tyre is 100% impacted by feel and psychological confidence rather than pure facts. So, each should choose what makes them happy.

I cant speak highly enough of the Rosso Corsa II's. Coming from Dunlop Q3+ we're offered in the US, i realized that Dunlop uses a really stiff carcass on the Q3+ which made the rear end feel like it wanted to dance going in and out of corners when leaned over. Now with the Pirelli Corsa II's the tires just overall feel smoother and almost like they stretch and conform to the road better, not to mention the treadless black carbon shoulders that concentrate the sticky stuff where you really need it and with competitive longevity to the other major brands.

I would say this: if money is not an issue , I would stick to r11/v02(or whichever you prefer) My thoughts is that , using the same tyre, whether road or track oriented , will offer you consistency in feeling, tyre pressure, carcass hardness, profile, suspension settings etc etc. Just one less varibles in black out of the equation. Also you need to consider the tyres that the majority use as it would be familiar to everyone what it should feel like , where is the limit and the user base to help to solve a problem or an issue. Those road oriented tyre like rosso cross s 22 will no doubt have a wider range of working temperature , but not really like the high temp. Lastly, the slick can be turned but not the threaded version. I felt If rider are in novice, lower inter, road tyre will be just fine to start up. If you step into the fast, you will start appreciate the track oriented tyre much more. The most beneficial set up for me is a set dry, anything from supercorsa SP , SC, bridgestone r 11, v02, plus a set of Rain (W01 at the mo)

Michelin Pilot Power on a 500lb 140HP Suzuki GSXR1100. Seems I'm still not overheating these tires after 8 years of track days. I've only detected a slight rear slip at power on in a corner. I should be melting the rear on corner exits and feeling some drift. Front sticks without a doubt, even during my many newbee mistakes.

Before watching this video: I've been watching all your vids and hitting up the track... I LITERALLY just bought street tires for track use (Low A, High I group) and was stuck debating between Rosso 3's and SP v3s. Now I see this video come up and I'm like wow... the timing.

Last year, I switched from (old) Dunlop Sportmax to Pirelli Diablo Rosso III's on my '96 Kawasaki ZX7R. It totally changed the character of the bike in a good way. It's amazing how it handles now. I can do things with it I thought were not possible. So much confidence, too. I might try the Corsa II's when this wonderful set has worn out.

Pilot Power 4s on a CBR964 Fireblade, always been happy with them but came off at Brands Hatch (Paddock Hill) a couple of years ago in October when the back wheel grip gave out, dragging my knee and possibly hanging off a little too much, bit damp and cold but the tyre was warm, just lost grip as I gently put the power back on out of the bend...ran out of skill! Have thought about different tyres so might give them a go, thanks!

@@alexv.100 Yeah, I've never had any issues with them and I think I've gone through a few sets now from 3s and 4s. I think it was just bad luck that the grip gave out, maybe hanging off a little too much and a little water on track...not too much damage but a bit annoying!

4:03 wow that lean angle. and 4"45 amazing the tires can keep such good traction and such an extreme angle, impressive. but I wonder how much lean it would take to keep the suspension/forks from sufficiently doing as intended by what I'm thinking might be too much horizontal torque.

One thing that was ignored in this entire discussion is the "feel" of the tyres. I'm sure that a better rider could brake later, carry more lean angle, accelerate harder than me on a lesser tyre, but it doesn't discount the fact that the top tyres can offer the most in terms of feel (at least that's my personal experience). I am a B-group rider, but going from Pirelli SP to SC instantly gave me so much more feel and confidence it was almost hard to believe, laptimes went down good 2-3 seconds as a consequence too. Edit : I ride at Sepang, so getting tyres up to temperature is literally never an issue, regardless of the tyre used.

Dunlop SportSmart TT work for me. I had them on my Suzuki SV1000 and now on my Triumph Daytona 955i. They take only one lap to warm up even in chilly (+9Celsius) conditions. I'm not in the fastest group, but my cornering speeds are similar with those using racing tyres. I know my braking and corner exits are quite safety focused. Last season I rode Pirelli Diablo Strada - cheap touring tyres with hard rubber that take long to warm up. However, once warmed up properly, I didn't find their limit on the track, and I was scraping hard parts of my bike a lot in corners. This is to say that lean itself was safe. As I'm still an amateur, I wasn't breaking that hard into corners or accelerating out of.
