There are different ways to make objects in a painting appear closer to the foreground or further towards the background. Things that would push something deeper into the painting include using less detail, less contrast, cooler colours and sometimes shadows. In this clip I use a dark glaze on a few branches that I want to push back deeper into the painting. By doing this I reduce detail, make the colours cooler, reduce contrast and create shadow - all of that by just applying this one layer! By using this and many other techniques we create depth in a painting - everything doesn’t appear to be flat and just on one level. This is a simple but very important technique used in realism.
