Another excellent video, as expected, but nevertheless very enjoyable. Just like the caller from this video, the first interview I watched on your channel was the one with Bernie Sanders (and, even if it has been less than 2 months since I've found your channel, I already feel 'nostalgic' about it lol). I haven't had many opportunities to use the Socratic interviewing in my personal life, but seeing how it works revealing the character of politicians in a few minutes (who usually work to 'hide' their principles to avoid embarrassment), I can see why it would work with people in one's own personal circle. It'll certainly come in handy when evaluating the moral character of current (and potential future) friends, family, coworkers, etc. (and also for our planned interview, of course) So, again thank you for sharing this!

Thank you for your comment and praise. Socratic interviewing in your personal life has many other benefits as well avoiding misunderstandings and arguments based on misunderstandings, less confrontational, leading the other person to the Flaw in the reasoning etc.

Jan, Will you please make a video teaching how to use the Socratic method with enumerated instructions and demonstrations. I see what you are doing as an incredibly valuable and under utilized contribution to civility and domestic harmony. Thank you for your work.

Thanks, Jan. I've searched the internet for instructions and demonstrations on the use of the socratic method but found nothing demonstratiive or practicable. This video of yours popped up in my youtube feed today, I was not aware of your work before. I have now watched several of your interviews; Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reed, Joe Biden, Charlie Rengel, Barnie Frank, etc and I will watch others and compare them to the instructions you give in this video. I will also read Plato's Dialogues (again). As for teaching the method, I invision a role playing demonstration where a disagreement between two people escalates into a name calling argument juxtaposed by a role playing of the same disagreement in which one or both participants apply the socratic method of interviewing in order to understand the other and come to an agreement. A narrator's voice could describe the methods and thought processes involved as the scenario unfolds. I realize this would require coordination of actors and script writing as well as editing all of which you may not be set up for. If you come across something you think might be helpful please call it to my attention. Thanks again for your reply and your work.

William Joyce Thank you for your explanation. I recommend you watch my interviews on different topics including philosophic topics that will help you become more familiar with Socratic interviewing. Then, try doing the Socratic interviewing yourself in any field that interest you. Don’t waste your time with Plato’s dialogues. It’s sad to say but Socrates engaged in equivocation which is not a proper use of the Socratic interviewing technique. He is also unnecessarily Long winded and round about and did not have a clear philosophy that was integrated. He started the ball rolling 2500 years ago and asked many important questions for which we should thank him but don’t expect him to deliver the goods, it’s too much to expect. The project you Envision is a great project but at the moment I would not be able to deal with it.

Hey Jan. In this video, you mention that you got your start in TV on a show in Puerto Rico called, "What is your Philosophy of Life?" Do you know if these shows are available to the public, and if so, how to get access to them? Thanks. -Your #1 fan

Thank you for your interest. I’m sad to say they are not available however there are 400 interviews and may be another hundred monologues on my KZitem channel. Every important subject you could think of including the fundamentals of your philosophy. I recommend watching the ones That interest you either subject matter or personality and using those questions in your practice of the Socratic interviewing technique. Let me know how it goes and make some comments.

@@janhelfeld Thanks for the thoughtful answer Jan. One other question I had. Have you really been able to find success using the Socratic Method in your personal life? Like you, I discovered Plato when I was 18, and I've been enthralled with the Socratic Method ever since. I don't know why everyone doesn't talk that way whenever they are disputing with someone about something. And then since I've seen you revive the SM in the modern context with so much skill, patience, bravery, and intelligence, it gave me hope that my interest in the Socratic Method was not only academic. However, I've had absolutely no success in implementing it in my personal life. In my experience, people get MORE offended when I use it than when I argue more conventionally. Maybe it has to do with something about me personally. I don't know. Anyway, I was just curious what your experience has been like off-camera with the Socratic Method, if you really think a Socratic Method lifestyle (if I can put it that way) is a realistic possibility, and any tips you might have for someone who is really struggling with getting other people to see the value in it that you and I see. Thanks again so much for your time and consideration.

@@whatithink3073 From your comments it appears to me that you are a thoughtful and wise person In many respects not least is your character. So kudos to you. Regarding the lack of success in your personal life with SM, It would be useful to say a specific example or two. Remember the first part of the method used in your personal Life is to understand with your questions why they believe what they believe.

On Twitter, after watching this, I have found myself typing out arguments, and then deleting them. Then asking myself "How can I get them to say these things?" ...and that has worked AMAZINGLY. I appreciate you taking the time to explain the value of it. The funny thing is, I used these same techniques in coaching and developing people professionally, however, with my discipline of debate, it wasn't the technique we used, and so I didn't get accustomed to using it in arguments.

I love your interviews. Can you give me a quick definition of what you mean when you say that you are an “objectivist”? I am a libertarian but I am not sure what you mean when you claim to be an objectivist.

Thank you so much for your support! The best way to see whether you are an objectivist is to do the quiz philosophic locator app called what’s your philosophy? You can see it on Google play store with an android phone. I would be happy to talk to you more in depth about this if you like all objectivist are libertarians but not all libertarians are objectivist

y'know what i find funny, is how larken rose thinks he won the debate, (way back when you debated him) when it seemed to me that you clearly and decisively won ! haha- others disagree, yet they won't debate you, which is what i always tell them to do, when they wanna argue! i never claimed to be a good debater but you're the one i cite most often- i wish someone else would rise to the occasion-- maybe professor block would do it again, haha- he probably thinks he won that one too, haha!

tinfoilhatter So far Victor Pross is the only one to do a second debate. Regarding Larken rose, that was not actually a debate the anarchist my anarchist Moderator, wanted me to interview him I didn’t even know who he was or that he wanted to debate. The interesting thing is that is my discussion with him he claimed he would never initiate physical force against another person even if he had to die, that is, even if his life depended on it. Since then he has changed his mind and I’m going to take some credit for this change of heart.
