Thanks for this video! I have a ton of ClayBuster 1075-20 wads for loading tapered hulls but I haven't been able to scavenge anything but straight-walled hulls from my local gun club for some time now. I applied this modification and now have a tight seal for the dozens of RC, Federal and Fiocchi hulls that I've collected in the past. Yes, it's an extra step but with the current scarcity of components this is a great workaround.

Adding a very thin piece of nitro card over the powder will also work, as will a thin layer of paper towel!

Thanks. If you want some 16 gauge heavy magnum loads check out my channel. Up to 1 3/8 ounces. I’ve got a 1 7/8 ounce load for it too but not sure if I’ll do a video on it. I got it from Hal Abbott, he’s the TSS shot guy.

Hey guys, Claybuster makes a “Federal/Import 12 Gauge Wad”. It’s basically a neon green clone of the Winchester gray(silver) 7/8oz wad but with a wider over powder cup. Works great on Federal, Cheddite, Fiocchi etc. hulls. It solves that pesky powder migration problem When using Winchester wads in straight wall hulls. They do however have splines in the petals which makes them unsuitable for the lee 7/8 or 1 ounce slugs.

We’ve got the pink 1 1/8 ounce wads for the import hulls as well as several other wads that fit them. I was just demonstrating what could be done if you didn’t have proper wads. You can also just add a thin nitro card under the wad too.

Thanks for the video. I'm new to shotshell reloading and the load recipe I was using for Cheddite hulls and WAA12SL hulls never mentioned the two weren't made for each other and I was getting bad powder migration. I'm going to use this trick until my new wads come in.

A large 1.25" dia steel ball bearing works awesome. Just squisg it against the back end gas seal and it flares it out perfectly

Heating it up with a torch for a couple seconds will still allow you to handle it but will help the plastic move more easily

How about just using an X 10 X gas seal and then a taped wad without modification… in a 10 gauge hull of course.

I loaded 2 3/4 clear hulls with tungsten running 1481 FPS for goose. With twice the amount of bb’s then steal. Those hulls can be EXTREMELY Affective if not more then any 3” or 3 1/2” in 12ga or 10ga depending on what shots being used. If your going cheep and using BB for a BB gun then you need the extra room that a 3” or 3 1/2 is needed.

Well do it right and buy teflon wraps to save your barrel and chokes if you run any. My Application is either turkey or goose. I had eight shells destroyed a high dollar Indian Creek choke on my H&R SB3 10 gauge a few years ago. With the borescope you could see were chips where missing from the choke! None of the manufactures I’ve test have used anything more then a wad with federals being the best. With TSS you want to uses the teflon wrap inside your wad in hopes it will provide a bit more protection for your choke tube and barrel!

I add an overshot card made from milk jug and that stops powder migration and let me run chalanger and sts or gun club hulls interchangeably.

Hi bud, Sweden here, LOVE ! your videos. I have a problem finding the right" Winchester WSF" powder load för to handload with "Hornady" Buckshot .330. 00 Buckshot. I bought the "5th Edition - Lyman Shotshell Realoding Handbook" thinking that it would solve all my problems. It did not. Om pages 355 and 356 i can see the proper powder löad for 2 an three quarter shells BUT nothing ! att all about the correct powder charge for to reload the 3 inch shells

Winchester WSF isn’t a 3” powder, it’s for 2 3/4” 1.25 ounce loads or 35.4 grams. If you want to use it for 3” 10 pellet loads, use 26 grains of WSF powder, an x12x gas seal or two 1/8” nitro cards, the claybuster cb1138-12 wad, and 10 pellets stacked by 2’s. Over shot card and fold crimp or roll.

@@theshotgunscientists - Thank you for you fast answer bud. I feel kinda stupid but i must ask anyway. When you say "Its for 2 3/4 1.25 ounce or 35.4 grams" The word "Load" do you mean Buckshot load or powder load ? - - I read somewhere ( and wrote it down ) that one should/could use 9 hornady .330 buckshot for 2 3/4 loads and 15 pellets Hornady .330 for 3 inch hulls/shells. Is this wrong ? - I desperatley need th correct powder load for theese 2 types of shells i want to load ( I have already bought all the components. In a nutshell - "Winchester WSF" Powder load for 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells that will be loaded with " 00 Buckshot". Thank you for your patience.

@@Hoosmoose WSF is for 1.25 ounce 12 gauge shells. You can also do 1 ounce or 1 1/8 ounce with it. It can be birdshot or buckshot, or even a slug as long as the lead weight is right for the powder charge. 15 pellets of 00 buck .33 caliber is 1 7/8 ounces which is way too much for WSF. You need longshot powder or blue dot. 9 pellets of 00 buck .33 cal is 1 1/8 ounces, WSF will work for that load.

@@theshotgunscientists Shit i have bought 1½ kg of it over the internet. It said in the add that it was good for 12 guage :( I found something called Hodgons Longshot. @@Hoosmoose WSF is a 12 gauge powder, but it’s only good up to 1 1/4 ounces. It’s not a magnum powder. Longshot will do everything from 7/8 ounces all the way up to 2.25 ounces in 12 gauge. Hodgdon longshot is what you need. Imr blue is discontinued.

How do you tell the difference between the straight hull wad and the tapered hull wad?
@theshotgunscientists

The website usually tells you, but if you insert the wad in the hull shot 1/4 way in, the bottom of the wad will be extremely loose if it’s tapered.

Yeah but you’ll lose some capacity. Using a 1” by 1” piece of paper towel will work just fine too, just set the wad over the paper towel then insert it into the hull.

You loose a lot of capacity doing that. Makes the wad sit quite a bit higher.
