Beware that Steam's Half-Life 2 uses a modern version of the Source Engine, which runs A LOT slower on period hardware. If you can download a torrent which uses the Source 7 version, that would be best. (Steam's version today is running on Source 24)

Isaax, no they are not. AMD has nothing currently that can beat a Titan Xp or 1080 TI. Maybe they will have with VEGA (probably not judging by FE), but Pascal has been out for more than a year now. Sure RX 570/580 are great price to performance ratio, but in shear high end pixel-pushing power Nvidia is definitely king now.
@TheRailroad99
7 жыл бұрын
yea, 8800 series were awesome, but before those, ATi were much better, e.g. the GeForce FX5 series were awful. I would love to see ATi again, maybe they will rename it back to ATi from RTG (Radeon Technology Group) and then launch a new cool card (NOT Vega, Vega has already failed in my oppinion, it will NEVER outperform Pascal). A good GPU should significantly outperform Pascal/Volta while having a smaller die (and thus a better efficiency). Maybe ATi will do something with infinity fabric and multiple dies

I had a single factory overclocked (HIS IceQ3 GPU clocked from 575MHz to 625MHz) ATi Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB AGP card around 2008 ish, and I loved that card. I can only imagine what it was like when in working Crossfire! I can say that I have had the privilege of using a heavily overclocked (Sapphire Atlantis, as delivered GPU clock speed of 390MHz, was clocked to 485MHz) 128MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro with a CPU heat sink and fan beautifully modded to the GPU and heat sinks on the RAM. I then got my hands on another Sapphire branded card, a 256MB X850 AGP that was upgraded beautifully with an AMD Athlon 64 x2 CPU heat sink and fan on the GPU, GPU overclocked from 500MHz to 590MHz. It was a great time in computer history to be honest.

IMHO there is some false information regarding Crossfire and PCI-Express. ATI didn't used PCI Express for Crossfire until recent years (after frame pacing scandal), they developed the Crossfire internal bridge some years after the release of this card wich had some decent bandwith, but saturated quickly. PCI-Express 16 lanes gen 1 was never saturated with these cards, heck, even 4 lanes barely saturates. Its quite remarkable what ATI did with GPUs that weren't developed with Crossfire in mind. It's an "frankencard" with those extra image processors and inputs.
@alec8759
7 жыл бұрын
Pcie crossfire was used at the time for the entry level x1300 which did not require very much bandwidth to begin with. The x800 series used dongle connectors to the dvi-i ports.
@yancgc5098

Your explanation of what Crossfire was before this card was introduced made no sense to me. What was the Multi GPU problem that this specific GPU solved at the time?
@BudgetBuildsOfficial
7 жыл бұрын
+Yanteus Maximus: The bandwidth allowed by the new connector, allowed for over double the bandwidth to be shared between the cards, previous attempts saturated the PCI-E Ports which would limit your refresh rate to 60Hz when playing at anything higher than 1280x1024, which on a CRT would cause eye stain. The X1950XTX allowed the CRT to run at its full refresh rate and thusly stopped flickering and allowed people to enjoy higher settings, resolutions, and frame rates.
@yancgc5098
7 жыл бұрын
Budget-Builds Official Thank you very much. I did not know that going below 72Hz would cause eye strain on CRT, but supposedly the smaller the CRTs are, the less eye strain it would produce at 60Hz, right?
@BudgetBuildsOfficial
7 жыл бұрын
+Yanteus Maximus: Yes that's very much why smaller OEM CRT's would offer you some great colours, decent resolutions, ect.... But compromise on refresh rate, as they were generally made smaller and as such were less of an issue. (Not many went past 1280x1024 anyway) As for most CRT Monitors though, most refresh rates below 70Hz can cause flickering and eye strain.

Two reasons for that. They introduced HDR later on which was far more intensive (remember the lost coast demo? The x800 wouldn't have ran that because it didn't support Shader model 3.) And also the standard for high res gaming then 1280*1024 or if you really wanted to push the boat out 1600*1200.

I had this card for some time, which I chose over the GeForce 8600GT (DX10) as that card was about the same speed in DX9, costed more and really was not that good in general. The first thing I did was to go for a custom cooler from Arctic, because the stock blower was just terrible. It was the first card that made me drop the 2 SLI Voodoo2 from the computer. When it failed, a few years after I got GTX270 which was a huge jump for games like Fallout 3. The X1950XT was the last good card from ATI IMO. Curiously, 17 years later, I bought an RX7900XT, first time out of Nvidia box. I Guess I'm really a sucker for all all those X's! 🤣🤣🤣

The idea for the non-crossfire mode for the two cards has always interested me. There have been a good few other applications for a secondary gpu over the years, like dedicated physx cards, though none i know of are really common. Personally, i always thought it was a shame how few accelerator cards we really have these days. I feel like it would be really interesting to see a version of crossfire/sli designed specifically to allow an expansion card primarily for extra vram and additional memory bandwidth, with enough juice in its graphics core to take some weight off from postprocessing. Could boost the life of a lot of existing cards by a lot, since memory is the chief bottleneck. Hell, if you ask me, raytracing effects and other machine learning black magic should have been in dedicated accelerators separate from the main gpu this whole time.
