Do we find the worms that go into compost bins (like red wigglers) in nature (a forest for example) or do we have to buy them? They are not just earthworms are they?

You can find worms that are indigenous to your area, night crawlers tend to be more territorial but can still commingle with other species. Red wigglers are typically the composting types. If you can’t find many, I typically will buy some red wigglers put them in my vermicompost and after a while they will adjust to the organic materials I add. After some time I then add them to my compost (finished) piles for further refinement.

Oh, I loved hearing Dr. Elaine Ingham say this! I'm doing everything she mentioned with my indoor were bins and outdoor compost piles. I said many times that diversity of inputs to a worm bin is important so that the worms get exposed to a wide range of biodiversity. Different carbons, different nitrogen sources, etc. Thank you! ~ Sandra
