My Grandfather was in WWI but would not talk about his experiences. All i ever knew from my dad was that my grandpa went "over the top" into no-man's-land 7 times. We had a photograph of him in his uniform and we had his helmet. And we all were lucky enough to have him. He was a friendly and kind hardworking man and I'm sorry for those memories he carried with him. But I'm very proud of him. 🇺🇲❤️

USMC Veteran 1974-78. Marines in France served with the 4th Marine Brigade, which was part of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division. Marines in WWI who were awarded the MOH received one from the Army and one from the Navy. There were only two Marines who received 2 MOH’s for separate actions. They were Dan Daley and Smedley Butler. SF
@GhostRider-sc9vu

This is why as heroic as Cpl. Pruitt was he should only have received either the Army version or the Navy one not both. It was this and the other Marine WWI MOH winners that caused Congress to ban the awarding of two Medals for the same person, even if like Butler, Daly and Tom Custer they were for separate actions, instead of doing it right and just banning the awarding the Army and the Navy MOH for the same event. Better yet they should have made the MOH the same for all services.
@DutyandValor

It hasn’t been done since WWI, I believe there were four Marines who were awarded both for the same action. I like to tell the story, I don’t try to get into the discussion on whether it’s appropriate or not, it was a different time and a handful of men did receive both branch’s MOH.

@@JeepWrangler1957 And one has to be an officer to have an installation named after them? OK. Hadn't thought of it that way, but maybe that's it. Air Stations [and some ground installations] are given geographical names. All the MCBs I can remember are named after officers. LeJeune, Pendleton, Butler... Camp Gilbert H Jonnson is the only facility named after an enlisted man, I could find. ''Hashmark'' Johnson trained as recruit at Montfort Point, later serving as a DI there. He served in WWII and Korea and made SgtMaj. Fitting they should name a camp after him. Montfort Point was where African/American [or ''Dark Green''] Marines were trained before Truman desegrated the Corps.

You could petition your Senator , the Navy and the Marine Corps to name some installation or facilities after him. I'm sure they have it covered somewhere though. You should email them and ask as a FOIA request. Actually, I bet if you look him up on Wikipedia they'd have that information in their article.

People get confused by this. He was awarded two medals for the same action, because he was a Marine attached to the Army. The Army and Navy medals are visibly different types. This was done with a few other Marines but it was discontinued shortly thereafter. Many people think that these recipients were awarded the MoH twice (i.e., two different actions), which is not the case.
