I don’t comment very often. With that being said, I’ve been meaning to give Desmond a glowing review. Not only for his “look at this” segments, but as the most engaging eye in the sky of any network. From car chases to civil unrest to highlighting achievements of the citizens of Los Angeles. He does it all. As a Los Angeles native it’s great to see someone who is not only from Southern California, but is invested in the history of our state and willing to share his knowledge with the rest of us; allowing us to impart this knowledge to others and preserve our history. Thank you Desmond.

Hi mate. Was you onboard CVN-70 in June 1990 when it anchored off the coast of Fremantle/Perth Western Australia? I was a TV news cameraman at Channel 9 Perth at the time and myself, my journo and a bunch of other news guys from other networks got picked up in a Chinook at Fremantle and flown out the USS Carl Vinson that was still cruising in on the other side of Rottnest Island. Got to spend most of the day on that beast, shot a lot of footage and still feel as though we saw only a small amount of the ship. It's big. I recall interviewing crew in various places such as topside, the captain on the bridge, guys operating the steam powered launch catapults under the deck, guys in the onboard TV station, etc etc. They all said even though they had been on the ship for many many years, they still bump into someone new that they haven't yet met when getting off the ship at port. My father used to build numerous fighter aircraft here in Australia, his last bird he was foreman on was the F/A-18 Hornet, which became my most loved aircraft. Even to this day it's still my favourite. Being on the deck filming the F/A-18's doing takeoffs and landings was a huge highlight for me, and I was honoured to have been so lucky to do the news story on the ships visit and spend a day walking about that huge amazing ship. She certainly has an amazing history, so I'm never going to forget my time on her.

There are 9 amphibious assault ships that operate fixed wing F35B and V22 aircraft as well as helicopters for Marine landing forces in addition to the 11 super carriers. Counting the Amphibious assault ships around the world there are a lot more then the 49 ships claimed in this story.

Sucks here in NYC we haven't had a carrier since Kitty hawk and JFK were a thing. Now its all boring LHDs and with the newer safety laws. They have students go first. During our fleet week they had the public sitting 3-4 hours after 9AM EST in 90 degree heat for students and some guys in suits to have a party on the ship for the kids. It was sad that alot of people actually got sick in the heat especially the elderly. Back before Obama became president we also used to see alot of equipment when the old Sea Hawks, Harriers, Sea Knights and the older Huey models still flew, also back then we saw LAV 25s, EOD suits, there was so much fun until the mid 2010s and it all went to crap there is barely anything for anyone to see anymore and you could spend 2-3 hours exploring everything. Now its a 20 minute walk where they also rush the tours. But then again our military is going to crap.

Burn rate: 1600 lbs of fuel oil for the boilers per nm. That's if you don't have a lead foot Bird on the Bridge. The logistics of getting a million gallons of FO in the middle of the ocean on nowhere planet earth, "at least every 2 weeks" are boggling. Plus Food, Plus parts, Plus Jet Fuel, Plus mail, Plus crew transfers. Nukes allow you to plug up for jet fuel, unrep food stuffs and things that go "BOOM", and the unsung heroes of the fleet the COD drivers "Greyhounds" will take care of everything else.
@rael5469

@@Sarah_Swede All sounds good Sarah but if they have to refuel for the jet fuel anyway I don't think it would be THAT much longer to take on fuel for the ship. I just wonder if the nuke powerplants are really strictly necessary to operate a super carrier.
@johnjones5354
Ай бұрын
@@rael5469 Many Admirals thought the same in the early 1960's. Then the very first nuclear powered ship to engage in combat changed their minds. The advantages of using nuclear power over conventional power are many , but the biggest one is that since you don't have to store many thousands of tons of liquid fuel for the boilers, that tank space can be used for aviation fuel. Conventional carriers refueled every few days, between aviation and bunker fuel. Nuclear ships refuel with jet fuel every few weeks.
