I actually used the Polar lights models and got a ratio of 20:1 versus saucer beam to neck width. The measurements of the Polar Lights models were taken directly from the 11.25' studio model so that's about as accurate as it can be. The neck's measurements are 6.35 m diameter. The length of the neck at mid-point is 30 meters.

That connecting bridge isn't nearly what is concerning... look at the struts connected to the nacelles! Hardly big enough for the turbolift, jeffries tubes, and power transfer conduits. It's not about the proportions so long as the inertial dampening and hull integrity fields hold. Lose either of those and those bits of the ship become dangerously flimsy. If both fail and the ship is going any faster than docking thrust it'll get ripped apart by the tortional stresses in short order.

I’d say not much more than the transporter tube. Even if the hull was literally paper-thin (which it isn’t) and the transporter tube was 1.5 meters wide (probably way wider but whatever) that only leaves a meter or so left on either side. Maybe enough for wiring and stuff but there surely wouldn’t be any need for windows lol. And the forward torpedo launcher sure wasn’t very wide but I still broke the first time. “His was the most....” *tries to keep his sh!t together* “...human...” and then amazing grace for Spock. So the neck is just wide enough to fit a turbolift shaft. That makes sense considering Matt Jeffreys originally designed the Enterprise to keep the engine as far from the crew compartment as possible. The Enterprise operates in space only so you can get away with such a thin support structure, since gravity really wouldn't play a factor.

Gravity would play at least somewhat of a factor while orbiting planets. More importantly, torsion is always going to be a factor and there's no way that neck could possibly support the saucer connection to the engineering Hull.

The neck is not a weakness. The ship is designed to separate. If you take the time to blow away the neck, you just get two ships to fight instead of one. And you just wasted time in a in a battle attacking a useless area of the ship. The only thing in the neck, are observation lounges.

With such a thin neck you would imagion it would not be strong enough to connect the saucer and stardrive sections.

Well what can you say, between 1966 and 1979, they had some really good blow in the back writing rooms of Star Trek lol Christ I think even the Car Nimoy had while filiming, a 1963 buick riviera was wider than the TOS enterprise's neck!

I always felt it was weird to have windows on such a thin neck, too.

Probably NEEDED windows to reduce feelings of claustrophobia.

@@photonicus that's a good point, tho. Probably the only reason for the existence of windows on a starship since there isn't much to see anyways

@@highground2059 yeah and the neck (i think) is primarily for extra supply storage. Imagine you had a small, cramped office there and you had to process ship's inventory all day. I'd be BEGGING for a window to see a pretty nebula once in awhile. It'd keep me from going crazy.

The thinness of the neck and especially the nacelle pylons was meant to communicate an entirely different engineering than we'd imagine possible. Really magically, we'd think, untenably advanced construction in a 1950s to 1960s ethos.
