My father served on the USS Iowa during the Korean war. I remember him telling me about being in Okinawa, Japan for a bit and he learned to speak the language as well. He enlisted into the Navy at 16yrs of age as he may have lied about his age. He is now buried at Fort Rosecrans in San Diego, Ca. I remember seeing this ship when I relocated my family to Rhode Island in 1999. We drove around some places and ended up on a dead end road. We saw some ships and got out of the car to see them close up...I was amazed when I saw the huge 61 on one of them....As you know there weren't many cell phones with cameras back then so I couldn't get any pictures. We drove back the following weekend with a camera only to find it was no longer there. I worked for Raytheon and had asked some people about it and they had heard it was being towed to California to be mothballed. Since we live very close to Fall River, Ma. We can see the USS Massachusetts when we're in the area....Back in So. Cal., I was lucky to have boarded the USS New Jersey....I feel proud that I've seen 3 of this class of ships in my lifetime...I am retired now after 40 yrs of working for Hughes Aircraft Co., and for Raytheon. During that time it was all for the military. I have contributed to the USS San Antonio, LPD-17 and to the USS Zumalt. Thank you to anyone who reads this.

We were on a cruise as my time was up so as we pulled into Augusta Bay, Sicily I left the ship there. Leaving or walking out of the gate of the base leaving the Navy for good I looked over to my left and saw this great looking Battleship. Just setting there it sure impressed me. That woman trying to get the old vets photo so she can go back to her cell phone at 4:55. I was in a grocery store once, met an old Guadalcanal vet, had it written on his cap. I took my time and asked him lots of questions. His ugly impatient daughter really made it a hard conversation. Women, who are privileged to be the daughters of veterans who truly served like these old guys... Just need to shut up. We all know they won't. Here them go on and on with those cells phones: "what is he doing now?" "Tell him I will be home in ten minutes" I say put down the phone woman and go back home and whip them like we used to get it in the old days. Nope, she doesn't want to slap her feminized little boys. Too bad, my Dad was hard as nails, survived American Depression, WWII, Korea and worked up until a couple of years before he died. @Action Jackson I was Machinist Mate, on the Enterprise! I worked on and explored both the New Jersey and the Missouri. I know what would need to be done. If you pay attention to what I said, battleships are visually INTIMIDATING! I was on the Enterprise, in the South China Sea and I watched flight-ops on five carriers at a time. We were 5 miles apart. I can say from my own experience that carriers are not visually intimidating. I stand by my comment. Either recommission the old with new power-plant or build new ones and 'show the Flag'! Let it intimidate!

Massimo Max Why? An Iowa is an immensely strong gunnery platform that would serve perfectly well against ground and pound operations. It would be the perfect type of flagship, no modern-day ship is even close to the type of armor it has or the type of firepower she can release. I'm not talking about reactivating every single Iowa, just one and let it be the flagship for the US navy, just retro fit it with top of the line weaponry and it would be a hell of a ship.

As much as I'd like to see the Battleships back on the high seas it mite be a better idea to redesign a new Generation of a Battleship, go old school on some stuff (really thick Armor) and some updated 16 inches (finding parts for the old ones just this side of impossible) but you have to leave space for the new rail guns and make it Nuclear powered. Side note the USS Wisconsin has been kept in a higher state of retirement, it's the only one that could conceivably and at great expense and a good Chuck of time make it back to sea.

And power it nuclear or a propultion system like the USS Freedom and Independence. Boom, unstoppable 21st century battleship!

I just came upon this video at 12:52PM CST. 11/24/2019. I know it's too late to state that this ship and the Mo. should be brought to battle readiness and recommissioned into the fleet.

I heard somewhere, maybe a movie that on a specific year that most of those ships were taken out of retirement and made usable incase of sudden need ( War). I believe the movie had Kirk and Michael Douglas and a back in time cloud.

They should refurbish the Iowa and book annual cruises on her, with a demo firing of all the guns included. Bet Carnival couldnt compete with that.

I was in Norfolk the day the Iowa was decommissioned. I was serving aboard the USS SCOTT DDG-995. I watched as the tugs took her up river to inact fleet. She passed astern of us quietly. I cried......

Well now you made me cry too. My little brother was the last active duty crew to sail on USS IOWA. After USS IOWA he went to USS WISCONSIN. My brother invited me to the Dependents Cruise on USS WISCONSIN. Half the day going out to sea and half the day to get back to the dock. A huge grill for the cookout on deck, food, snacks, drinks and we could go to every nook and cranny of the ship (not the bridge) and they fired all guns except the 16", and they had flyovers and now I've really got my tears flowing now. I'll never forget that day.

All four Iowa class battleships are preserved as museum ships, along with a good selection of earlier battleships and ww2 era ships, it was the right thing to do, they are part of history.

This was the ship that endured a turret explosion in 1989, killing 47 men. Those large naval guns are dangerous to operate and put a large number of people at risk when they are used It was foolhardy to reactivate this class in the 1980s and it would be even more so now. RIP to the brave men who died on her.

You know, with modern materials and targeting technology, it is perfectly possible to put lightweight large caliber guns on fairly small ships. The key is to use RAPs.

If y'all are near Houston pop over to take a gander at the oldest and only Dreadnaught , the U.S.S. Texas moored near the San Jacinto monument near Pasadena South East Houston, there is nothing like it afloat. simply a slice of Military hardware from a different age.

I'm so glad that the navy and government saved the four Iowa class battleship and did NOT cut them up for scrap. The Iowas are the finest example of battleships ever built. I don't believe the navy will ever build another battleship. I don't think the navy will re-activate them. The navy didn't like them because they were manpower intensive. These ship should be preserved. The New Jersey has 19 battle stars. The most of any ship in the navy. The battleship North Carolina was thankfully saved from the scrap yard in 1960 by a teacher who ran funding campaign the buy the NC from the navy. The North Carolina has 15 battle stars from WWII. No other ship earned that many battle stars during the war.

The USS Enterprise earned 20 battle stars, which is more than these show ponies who were largely awarded them for bombardment when the enemy couldn't shoot back. The gray ghost was the most significant ship in winning world war II in the Pacific. She was cut up for scrap after the war.

@@metaknight115 The Yamato was a powerful battleship and something to be feared. But as the US Navy showed with enough airplanes the the battleship can be defeated. It took all day pounding the Musashi before it finally sank. Likewise with Yamato. I like the Iowas b/c the designers balanced firepower, protection and speed. They were fast BB’s at 33 knots, good but not great armor, and guns almost as powerful as Yamato’s. The Japanese did take the hull of the 3rd to be built Yamato class battleship and made an aircraft carrier.
