@@CRAZYHORSE19682003 no matter which way you stack it (lone Kirov vs lone Iowa, totally unrealistic, or fleet centred around Kirov and fleet centred around Iowa), the Kirov would always detect the Iowa far outside of gun range and while in a fleet vs fleet situation frigates may well hit the Kirov (it's uncertain who would win, although Kirov would have a huge advantage over ordinary missile frigates), the matter would be decided before the Iowa ever got involved and it would be essentially useless. The Iowa isn't a ship that's useful for matching up against the Kirov or modern missile frigates, which would always detect her well outside of gun range and would smash her to bits with missiles before she ever got into gun range (mission kill at the least, with all radars dead). Battleships are cool, but modern naval battles centre around missile and aircraft carrying ships like frigates, Kirov and most importantly, aircraft carriers. The Iowa in reality would likely sail with an aircraft carrier group, which would likely beat the Kirov battle group, and the only contribution of the Iowa to the battle would be shore bombardment and CWIS for incoming missiles

You're activating your missiles way too late and they're going active after the enemy starts evading, acquiring the chaff instead of the ship. They have a seeker range of like 15km, pull those markers wayyyyyyy back. They're not like torpedoes. Edit: you're also launching chaff at full speed and outrunning the cloud. Slow down to ≤10kts to hide in the chaff cloud and turn to unmask your CIWS when going defensive. Phalanx sucks at intercepting the huge Soviet AShMs, and with a vessel without a SAM system(s) like the Iowa, you need to work your guns and chaff much harder than normal to avoid being hit.

We often severely underestimate fast battleships like that. They were designed to absorb torpedo hits and heavy shells while continuing to function, and they were fast enough to keep up with a carrier fleet in operating in excess of 30 knots. They were also updated to have competent electronics for the age, and the refit also cost less than buying a new frigate. A Granite is only the equivalent of a 15" HE shell, but without the specialised naval shell design or velocities to deal noticeable damage to a super dreadnought, which meant no mortal damage could be dealt. They were big, but they could deliver barely more than a full salvo from HMS Agincourt in the WW1 era. Advanced torpedoes of the cold war were also unlikely to have warheads big enough to disable a battleship with a single salvo At that displacement, they could also carry a huge amount of missile armament. It only takes one solid hit from a 16 inch shell to completely ruin the Kirov's day and although the Kirov could cripple the Iowa with solid hits we must remember that it is an armoured battleship and is designed to take hits. Of course there is no realistic scenario where an Iowa *gets* into gun range of a Kirov before sustaining mission-killing levels of damage, but if it were teleported to within a reasonable range the Kirov is not going to survive.

Some years ago I read a report by a Russian Admiral about thr Iowa class ships. They said we can hurt them but once they came over the horizon. The Iowas would sink every one of them. Those ships were built to take on the Yamato class and win. The 16" Iowa had longer barrels higher velocity guns. Plus they were rated at 36 knots, Yamato 28. The Iowas were not to be taken lightly.

@@OtterTreySSArmy Ukraine has clearly taught you lots. Lots of propaganda, that is. Harpoons weren’t involved in sinking the Moskva. At all. It was multiple Ukrainian missiles called Neptune, designed based on earlier Soviet missiles. They were used in conjunction with a drone swarm to distract Moskva’s defenses. You Russia haters come up with the most ridiculous arguments. A knockoff of a Soviet missile sinking a ship is supposed to prove how bad Russian missiles (which are knockoffs of Soviet missiles plus 3 decades of R&D) are? That logic doesn’t follow. Ukraine scuttled its only frigate days into the war because it didn’t want to wait until Russia sank it and then put that up on social media. lmao WW1 shells… You people are a joke.

Like an intersection between the convoy raiding cruisers of WW2 and the missile age, in a manner completely unique to just a few years of history.

Unfortunately the Kirov's most powerful anti-ship weapon (its cruise missile) only carries a 750kg HE warhead. That is FAR too small to perpetrate the Armor of an Iowa class BB. All that would accomplish is to piss off the BB and cause it to completely destroy the Kirov with 16" shells
@thomasfarley5070

FYI, the Soviet missiles could not penetrate the side armor of an Iowa class BB. Since the Soviet Navy had no viable carrier based aircraft the Iowas were invulnerable to conventional weapons!

Spru-can destroyers or FFG-7 frigates would be cool. The Iowas had their own dedicated Battleship Battle Groups that were organized to supplement, yet independent of, Carrier Battle Groups. Each BBBG had cruisers for AW, destroyers and frigates for SUW/ASW, and support ships. If anyone has other information/opinions, comment section. Kindly. 16 inch guns.... Even today's most advanced warships would break with the first impact of a 16 inch shell. let alone 9 of them. The Iowa class battleship is a relic, but those guns... are still terrifying. Any cruise missile cruiser that was struck with them could survive maybe one or two rounds before it was destroyed. They just don't make them like they used to I guess.

In reality, the Iowa class have incredible armor that was designed to withstand armor piercing rounds. Shells from a battleship gun have a much higher velocity compared to missiles. The Kirov class had a LOT of firepower but in my opinion, never had a chance in a one on one fight if it had ever happened.
@jedimasterdraco6950

Depends on where it hit. United States battleships starting with the Nevada-class (the first "standard"-type battleship) were armored according to an all-or-nothing principle wherein only the vital systems were protected, but that protection was much greater than what most battleships could boast. Theoretically, these missiles could damage the less armored bow and stern (or the superstructure), but the armored citadel would have enough buoyancy that so long as it was not penetrated, the ship likely wouldn't sink and could be taken in for repairs. This protection scheme actually proved itself during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal when the battleship South Dakota lost power and was subjected to a prolonged bombardment from the Japanese battleship Kirishima. While the superstructure got so badly torn up that she needed to be repaired over the course of three months, her hull was completely intact despite the fight taking place at point-blank-range.

An Iowa mod that replaces one 16 inch battery with VLS cells would be amazing. Also, I am not sure that even 4 missiles could actually sink an Iowa unless it gets to the magazines. They are just too well armored and the fire suppression systems are amazing. She would be mission killed and burning badly, but not sunk.

P700 would be fired in salvos, not 1 by one. One missile would be high to track the target, others would stay low to be harder to detect and intercept. Also, Kirov would detect and fire the missiles way before it would be in Iowa's gun's range. Realistically, Iowa would not stand a chance

Let's be honest. Old Kirov will tear Iowa to rags. The new Kirov, which is coming out soon after the update with the 3M 22 Zircon missiles, it will tear up an entire aircraft carrier group alone, so the range of the 3M 22 missiles is 1000km. And the S-400 on board.

You're not wrong about your skill; or perhaps the ai's lack of skill. The Kirov had a pretty decent advantage, but the Iowa did have a trick up its sleeve, and you used it. The 16 inch guns, while inaccurate, don't have countermeasures. You played the Iowa the best it could be to try to win, and managed to be victorious. The AI played to Iowa like a chump and sank quick.
