My Dad served on the USS Radford at the age of 16, when the Captain found out how Old he was, he told my Dad to go home, He didn't and served on board the Radford as an ammo passer for the number-2 5-inch Gun, he was also a "Plank Owner". At the end of WWII, he became a Merchant Seaman, and while in New Orleans, he got drunk, and a recruiter convinced him to join the Marine Corps where he serve in Korea, and 2 tours in Vietnam. The Radford was stricken from the Navy on 10 November 1969, the "Marine Corps Birthday", Dad also retired in 1970. "Semper-Fi"

In the commissioning picture at 2:02, my grandfather is standing in the front row, second from left-Charles F. Kolb. We have a framed version of this picture that was hanging on the wall in his den.

Great video! This was a very meaningful episode to my wife and me. My wife’s uncle, John Ewing, from Wheeling, Missouri, was one of those Helena survivors that Redford rescued. Seaman Ewing had been on the USS Chicago when she was sunk off of Guadalcanal. Now, he was in the water again. Because of the heroic actions of the Redford, it was only for a short period of time. The Japanese Long Lance torpedoes, were probably, the best torpedoes used by any nation during WWII. The range and accuracy of these torpedoes were almost unbelievable. Especially in the actions around Guadalcanal, the Japanese used these torpedoes with deadly accuracy. Thank you for a very interesting and informative episode.

Why, with a record like that was this ship sold for scrap. You'd think someone would have preserved her. A sad ending.

Pedantic time: those were ‘enclosed mounts’ and not ‘turrets’ in US Navy speak. But they will always be turrets to me 😂

Another great ship mistreated about the US government. She deserved better than being scrapped. She served this country with pride and distinction. It boils me. It makes me sad. Think how our government treats these ships.
