the wonderful talented standardbred is the most talented of all breeds in my estimation. they are a strong and personable breed who can do many things after they are done racing, perhaps at age 12. It is a shame most people do not realize that they must race with a specific gate unlike the thoroughbreds, and still go almost as fast.

That description made me smile. To continue that analogy, pacers' movements are the same as what the military describe soldiers as being square-gaters.

Pacers run faster than trotters, which begs the question: why didn't horses evolve to run that way, rather than the way trotters trot? It would seem that natural selection would have favored them.

because typical horses neither pace nor trot at top speed--they gallop. the thoroughbreds at the kentucky derby, breeders cup, etc., are faster than standardbreds (the which pace and trot).

"Begs the question" does NOT mean "raises the question" It is a false rhetorical proof that some dumb bunny did not understand and started using incorrectly. Now everyone is "begging the question." Look it up and/or stop using it.

The answer to your question is complicated. The standardbred breed did not EVOLVE in the wild. Perhaps, if horses were not domesticated animals, horses who paced could outrun predators and therefore go on to be the preferred gait, but captive animals were intentionally bred to pass on certain attributes. However, despite their speed on the trot or the pace, a wild horse of any lineage would simply run. Standardbreds can RUN far faster simply because they are a horse. They can run at about 40mph - but only for a short distance. They could trot and pace for prolonged periods at 33 mph, but that would never be fast enough to outrun any predator.

Actually wolves commonly pace because it's more efficient. Many dogs will resort to pacing if they have back pain.

As some domestic pets age, they might sometimes pace, but they are unable to maintain that gait at any appreciable speed. I see dogs pacing all the time, but only at very slow speeds -- almost a walk.

hopples not hobbles - two different things
@davemattia

I've trained harness racehorses my whole life and I NEVER saw a horse who was HURT by hobbles. Rarely, when a horse who is bred to pace refuses to pace, a dumb trainer will make the hobbles very tight and the horse can get hobble-burns which is a kind of chaffing - but nowadays that is ancient history. The pacing gait comes so naturally in modern day standardbreds as breeding has perfected the gait, most pacers are pacing in the field a few days after they are born. Trust me, if hobbles caused pain, there is no horse on earth who would willingly wear them. Sometimes a juvenile in training will not even wear a hobble until a few weeks before actually racing. They might seem confused or anxious for a minute but then they glide right along with them without a care in the world. Most pacers wear hobbles that are actually longer than their stride, but it's prudent that a pacer should wear hobbles in the even of a stumble or misstep. I am not telling you this because I try to deny that horse racing is cruel because in my heart of hearts, I know that some horses (about 2%) do not want to race and I feel sorry for them, but that's an issue wit their temperament and not with pain. There are lazy and stubborn horses just as much as there are lazy and stubborn people. I tell you this to educate you so you can create interesting conversation the next time you talk about harness racing.

They don’t train them to “pace” they force them to “pace”
@ashtonmenzies4982

it's a fully natural gait. A completely untouched standardbred foal of yearling will naturally pace if that's what's bred into them. The training simply teaches them, much like english riders teach their horse to jump and do fancy dressage moves, to use the pace to go FAST and how to move quickly and safely at a pace. I don't agree with all race-horse training methods but hopefully this clarifies that a bit for you. ;)

Its a natural gate, Which means they are born with it. If a horse wants to break the pacing gate into a canter or walk then it will. Yes horse racing is abusive in a lot of ways, and yes most horses are in unfortunate situations. But they are NOT forced to pace! And the only reason pacers wear the "Hopples," is so the horse can have room to move its legs, because the pace is a extended trot. It can break into a canter or walk. The Hopples don't affect the horse gate at all if that's what you were implying.

@@MsAggie78 A horse can trot or canter in hopples, the hopples just make it so its more comfortable for the horse to go at a pace. You cannot force a horse to pace. Even a standardbred, if it is a trotter, will not pace in hopples. The pace results from a genetic mutation that only some horses carry. I work with standardbred pacers and would genuinely be happy to answer any questions you have about pacing horses.

Everyone who comments on this thread is a moron. Hobbles weigh nothing and they are only there to REMIND a horse of his gait. You folks know NOTHING about horses. If HOBBLES hurt, a horse would kick them off or kick you off if you tried to put them on. If you know nothing - shut up.

The hopples don't " help" them maintain the pace, they FORCE them to. Just say it.

Hopples act as a reminder to pace, not a force. A horse can still trot or canter in hopples, it happens at the races. The pace is a natural gait resulting from a genetic mutation only some horses carry. If I took a quarter horse and put them in hopples, they would still trot or canter. I work with racing Standardbreds and would be happy to answer any questions you have about the breed.
