Of all his recordings available on KZitem this one I come back most frequently. From 4 mins to 13 mins or so he toys with the notes to evoke memories of Bangladesh. I can see my grandparents, I can feel my mother’s touch, her rebuking me, the paddy fields swaying in nor-western stormy winds, it’s just magical !

Subrata: You are really uploading priceless gems. There has not been a Sitarist equal to his genius in living memory-- perhaps, history. I applaud you for sharing such beautiful pieces. Takes me back to the 60s/ 70s when Khansahab had peaked in terms of sheer genius, innovation and ingenuity. Many thanks for your generosity

There is an eerie similarity between the famous south indian classical violonist Lalgudi Jayaraman and Ustad Vilayat Khan in the construction of the Alap. The most important defining notes of the raga are taken step by step (Ri, Pa, Ni-Sa in Desh) and every possible phrase and gamaka are explored in and around those critical notes. This style of alap development is so profound and spontaneous, and brings out every possible facet of the raga. Amazing performance.

I see no need to compare musicians or say "no one is better than X." But Vilayatji was a towering figure -- no doubt. And in terms of complaining about sound quality -- sometimes we get what we get and the alternative is to lose the performance altogether. I applaud every action keeping this beautiful music alive!

Richard Hayes Yes, indeed. Nothing is achieved by praising past musicians at the expense of living artists.

The picture on the wall behind the dais is that of late Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan. Could it be that these were played in Gwalior or at some concert series in memory of Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan?

Subrata da... THANKS A TONEE for sharing this great Rendition by the Greatest Man who held the SITAR. In your posting of TILAK KAMOD of Khan sahab, do you have the previous part where he played the Gat in a slower tempo. If I am not mistaken he had played, which I heard some years before... PADMAKAR. Most of the recordings of Ustad Vilayat Khan are from 1960s and 70s.

Vilayat Khan Yes, very bad sound quality. Around 38 minutes, it is difficult to distinguish between noise and music. The archival value is undoubtedly great.
