Sir Peter Ustinov one of the all time greatest actor 👏

Ustinov's character once addressed Olivia's scary Roman general as, "Your Magnitude." I didn't know he'd come up with this himself. Also, when Olivier requires him to stay in their camp till the battle is over, thereby risking his life, he said, "But I'm more of a civilian than most civilians." I love this movie and I love him--and everyone else--in it.

Everyone always lauds Spartacus for the performances of Douglas, Olivier, Laughton, Curtis, Ireland, and of course Ustinov, but one actor that is often overlooked is Jean Simmons. I thought that she was just spectacular as Varinia.

Peter Ustinov was a truly brilliant man among a constellation of brilliance - erudite, entertaining, poignant, endlessly fascinating...what a stellar cast of characters ‘Spartacus’ had...one more talented than the other. No such gathering of stars in a single film is even remotely conceivable today. Requiescant Omnes In Pace.

He was soo funny and smart and didn't take thing's to seriously. He knew when to go along with the other actor's and when to do something different. He knew what is true intelligence and how to have fun and not be unduly offended. I like how he tells his stories and does it with understated humor. It really gets to the heart of what really went on behind the scenes.

It seems that this movie has gained in stature and appreciation over the years as good red wine getting bettesr. Acting masterclass by Ustinov and Laughton and a classic gladiator fight between Strode and Douglas are some of the diamonds in this classic. Kubrick's and Metty's splendid camerawork and North's excellent score sealed it.

For his role in "Quo Vadis", Ustinov was tested repeatedly for the part of Nero and ultimately told he might be too young for the part. He replied, "If you wait much longer to decide I'll be too old." The idiots with the decision making chores didn't know what they were talking about but held the purse-strings to the movie. Nothing changes or ever will.

He spoke about the Brits playing Romans... that's actually a standard for a lot of Roman films, not just Spartacus.IN fact, John Wayne played a Roman centurion in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" when he said "Truly this man is the son of god" in a broad American accent and it was mocked because it sounded so wrong.

@thefantasyreviews: Over the years I have heard some resentment by various British actors that they are always the villains in so many films such as the sword and sandal pics, Star Wars and so on. But for me I am so glad that they have been the villains because they are SO DAMNED GOOD! They usually act circles around the other actors. As an American I appreciate their talent so much. Bravo.

I´ve always admired Peter Ustinov as a man and an actor, but a few of the points here don´t stand scrutiny: the idea that Spartacus isn´t an epic with any Christian theme is thin. The opening narration openly mentions it and the theme of one man opposing secular power - right is might - added to the fact that Spartacus is crucified, are another reminder. Finally, Ustinov´s recollection of the pauses in the scene with Olivier, while entertaining, don´t match the actual scene at all. I suppose all of this can be forgiven for, "I tingle", which is my favourite film line of all time.
@ppuh6tfrz646

It's interesting to hear Ustinov's opinion of the performances. I thought Ustinov's performance, although enjoyable, was not really appropriate for the film. I thought Olivier was excellent but Laughton was disappointing, portraying a Roman nobleman with a Yorkshire accent didn't really work for me.
@tango6nf477
2 жыл бұрын
Should they all have spoken in a Roman accent then, Olivier was also playing a Roman noblemen who spoke with another type of English accent, and the Americans spoke American English. That's the beauty of the English language, it is infinitely diverse and there is no need these days for snobbery.
@ppuh6tfrz646
2 жыл бұрын
@@tango6nf477 It's got nothing to do with snobbery, so you can put that card back in the deck. If you didn't notice that Laughton was turning his Yorkshire accent on and off throughout the film then you need to get your ears syringed.

@ppuh6tfrz: Mr. Ustinov is right. Thousands of people were crucified by the ancient Romans (and others) over a long period of time. The fact that the christian religion incorporated one crucifixion into their myth in no way whatsoever makes Spartacus' crucifixion a Christ figure. The lack of christian preaching in this film is one of the many great things about it.
