Hi guys! New subscriber here. Back in 1995, I stayed with friends in Woerden, across the street from a cheese shop. My friends let me explore the country on my own. I spent 18 days, just wandering aimlessly on Dutch trains. Utrecht became my favorite city (less tourist vibe than Amsterdam, for one thing, and close to Woerden, for another). Later, I was excited when an Utrecht Art Supply store opened here in Seattle. And, like you, I was disappointed to learn that it isn't a Dutch company. Anyway, thanks for the video!

We in The Netherlands were so lucky that almost all cities escaped WWII without too much damage, with of course Rotterdam being the main sad exception to that. But not only that. During the 50's and 60's when designing cities around "the car" was the big thing, most of the inner cities were spared, but not everything. The canal near the big mall next to Utrecht Central Station was very recently reversed back to its orignal layout. They completely removed a 4 lane highway that ran right through the city and thats completely gone now. Amsterdam was lucky too. In the 1960's the government was ready to implement the "plan Hokinen", Hokinen being an American traffic engineer. Many historic neighborhoods were on the list to make way for highways all throughout the inner city. Luckily the entire population was so horrified by this idea and put so much pressure on the government with mass demonstrations that the whole thing was cancelled. So yeah, we should really appreciate all these beautifully preserved inner cities because it was certainly not a given that we are able to enjoy them in 2024.
@RockyandKimball
5 ай бұрын
Oh wow! That’s amazing that the locals protested to secure their historic centers 😎🥰 I can’t imagine a 4 lane highway through Utrecht. That would totally change the vibe of the city. I’m sure the locals appreciate that being reversed. I would always choose history over convenience. I think partly because we come from a country that’s only a few hundred years old and we don’t have this type of legacy. When Kimball and I walk around we really appreciate the legacy of these older cities. Thanks so much for watching and chatting with us 👨❤️💋👨

8:38 The *ladybug tiles* are: *Tegen zinloos geweld.* Literal translation; against pointless violence. Or actually against violence, since most violence is pointless. But we like our gray area's like self defence etc. People got beaten up and died one too many times in the Netherlands, so that movement/foundation (stichting) was started [1997]. The way violence is rising in the Netherlands I think a lot of people forgot this also in the Netherlands, keep in mind this was a big national thing 27 years ago.

Since the bottom windows are that large they don't open up, the top window do open up with a special hook on a stick to open and close them from the inside. It's to let some fresh air in, and air the house out. Not all windows are like that. There is a diversity of them and how they function/work. Many American Expats mention windows and how they are and function, are opened and closed in the Netherlands but that is a system of German origins if not mistaken. Depending on how you turn the handle on the window you can either let it flip in, similar the top windows, or fully open the window up. However that is a more "modern" system than the windows in question with the video. 5 minute in question.

semi-educated guestimation on that 2nd tool: It looks like an old lace-bobbin ("kantklos" in dutch). Which would make sense, in conjunction with the other 2 markers: The scisors for cloth sold by the meter (so from a bolt and cut to length), and the safetypin for "furnituren" pins, buttons, clasps, buckles, rivets, eyelets, etc. The bobbin would represent the fine threads, used to sow everything together, or to weave/tie into intricate lace paterns. Again, i'm just guessing here, but i remember the shop there used to sell lots of colored thread for things like embroidery and bobbin lace. And the lace bobbins my grandmother used looked very similar to that mystery tool. Anyhow, so glad the gentlemen enjoyed the old 030. Safe travels and fair winds to all.

I love the way how you film and edit things... the eye for detail ... I have to start seeing things like your are seeing them ...Miffy/Nijntje was not created somewhere at the coast near Amsterdam.... Dick Bruna lived and worked in Utrecht all his life, hence the museum here and all the Nijntje references ... and that photo was indeed of Dick Bruna, the creator. At the Twijnstraat (at the other end of the Oudegracht, where you were staying) there's also this cat cafe... where you can have a drink while sitting with cats :-D .... The Ledig Erf area (connected to the Twijnstraat) is also a nice area to explore... Utrecht is also part of the bigger Randstad Area (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag and Utrecht). Utrecht is the most central in the country.... Amsterdam is just 20 min or 30 min by train, Den Haag is like 50 min by train, Rotterdam 40 min.... Den Bosch, Eindhoven also quite nearby.... so when you finally decide to come live here you are also part of this biggest Megalopolis of Europe: the Randstad....

11:06 That is not the only Church converted into a different function. The architectual value of the Chruches are too historically/cultural important, but the churches fell out of use because of secularization. Not all churches but many get re used, not all into public things like libraries or book stores. Some get re-assigned to living. So people actually have a church as their house. In some cases there might be some regulations and restictions tied to renovations, but similar to other houses with historical/cultrual value... why the big center city houses still got that medieval character, etc. But also with some older farms, etc. Cultuur geschiedenis conservatie. Conservation of cultural history.

I would recommend Maastricht here a church is converted to a bookstore. If not for the books just to look around at the architecture is a nice thing to do. We got the more private sectors as well, but not just that. I mean them falling in disrepair is also a big risk. I also noticed we in the south favor the Catholic churces more than the Protestant or other. A Protestant church has a higher change of getting demolished and replaced. While we don’t have any definitive plans to visit, we do have the desire to visit every city in The Netherlands, lol. Now, whether or not we can make that a reality is yet to be seen, but we’re keeping the intention in our hearts. 💕 Thanks for letting us know about your hometown. We’re adding it to our list of future cities we want to visit. We hope you have a beautiful Easter weekend 👨❤️💋👨

We have been thinking about it! 😎 Trouble is I have a great job in England and no way of getting a passport for The Netherlands at this time. But we definitely have it on our list of places to move to 🥰 Thanksgiving again for watching and chatting. We appreciate your support of the channel 👨❤️💋👨

It's actually Nijntje, would have been fun if you had tried to say it's real name, the name the creator gave it originally. Miffy sounds kinda iffy. As you later point out in the video he is from Utrecht so that is why the city has that much homage to it. And again cultrual heritage.

Oh my gawd, I didn’t dare butcher it. I’ve been let down by online “how to say such and such word” too many times. I need to just ask a local next time. Lol.

@@RockyandKimball Having it butchered and trying to correct it seems to be part of the fun for viewers. Take Utrecht as example. (You could have gone in, and asked them to help you pronounce Nijntje.) I also would stress on the fact that even if you ask dutch people they will have differences, depending on the area they are from and local dialect influences. I just asked my partner to say Nijntje (he's originally from Twente) his Nijntje even sounding similar is "shorter" than my Nijntje ([South] Limburg, NL) Stereotypically we "sing" and are softer, we have a soft "g" in comparison, we make sounds "longer" if that makes sense, thus "singing". There was this song Zachte G, harde L, it's about Brabants (southern part of NL), and how they have a soft "g" but a hard/harsh "l". But also double speech; a hard l / lul = dick. *Nijntje* comes from *konijntje* like a small child would/could say it. *Konijn = rabbit.* [Nijn] Konijn+tje, konijntje means a small rabbit. Very logical, how Miffy comes into play I could not tell you. Sound wise it sounds like the German Nein (no) many Americans know, but maybe a little less harsh and yelling, then we add t + ye. Nein-t-yè. Nijntje.

@@schiffelers3944 As I was reading this, all I could picture were complex equations and different graphs and charts flying by as I looked utterly dumbfounded, lmao. No but seriously, thank you for taking the time to explain. I have a feeling it will take me a bit longer to catch on but we’ll get there eventually. I definitely understand the part about different people from different areas pronouncing things differently. We absolutely have the same thing across America. So many dialects from Southern to Bostonian to Philadelphian, to New Yorkers, and beyond. Same is definitely true in England. So many dialects!

@@josephtadlock1615 😸😹 It very well COULD BE! 🥰 I think we just really like cute things. So much so that we’ll clean up their shyt, feed them, pamper them, pet them, adore them. Now that we don’t have a cat any longer, we’re holding off on getting another one so we can travel and have a hair and litter free home for a few years. 😁

Not sure it was hard to see, but they reminded me of shopping cart tokens. They could also have been other kind of tokens? [The coins/batteries.]

Yeah we’re not sure. They seemed like batteries but without the positive and negative side. The mystery continues.
