"...and a bunch of other moe shit" The difference, I suppose, is that it got famous before that moe shit was so prevalent. Things like "gao" and a character like Misuzu were far far less jarring 11 years ago. I still feel like crying when I remember the opening song, and Misuzu's slow degeneration.

ancalyme this review made me mad, he didn't understand the crow or the back story but it has EVERYTHING to do with the story 😂 yukito didn't touch misuzu when she was dying so he didn't get the curse himself. He basically sacrificed himself into a crow just for them to actually be a close family without the curse being passed on. The story shouldn't be reviewed by some idiot that couldn't comprehend or think of what actually happened. It's sad to say it but I think most people expect everything to be spoon fed to them and explained entirely. But making you think is all part of this masterpiece. It's made by Japanese, the Japanese always think ;)

The visual novel went way more in-depth with the backstory and explained a few more things clearly. If AIR got rid of the side girls' arcs in the anime I think it would've made the anime better, but at the same time, it wouldn't be a 'true' adaptation.
@kainewest6308

Never thought somebody would actually do an AIR review, I agree with most of your points. AIR's strength was the development between Haruka and Misuzu. AIR made a huge mistake by not focusing on it or the romance between Mizuzu/Yukito, then again i say these are the strengths of the show because apparently the VN's story/character arcs were butchered. Many people say that AIR is the best of the KEY VN's and say the anime doesn't really do it justice.
@UnderTheScopeAnime
8 жыл бұрын
+The LIon TamerWF I've heard that about the VN too (I also see Rewrite getting a lot of acclaim). If the anime had scrapped the other girls' arcs and focused solely on Misuzu, Yukito, and Haruko, it would've been much better off. That or if it had 12 more episodes to work with like Kanon and Clannad (plus another 24 for After Story). It just couldn't squeeze it all into one cour and still do it well.
@kainewest6308
8 жыл бұрын
+Under The Scope Reviews It has the same problems as Angel Beats! and Charlotte, it had too many characters without any proper developments and tried too cram too much ideas in such a short amount of time. on another note i see a running theme in Key shows, the ones that are 13 episodes are usually ones that have divisive opinions about them. I say this as a guy that loves Angel Beats! and AIR.
@UnderTheScopeAnime
8 жыл бұрын
+The LIon TamerWF I've thought the same thing, which is why I thoroughly expect Rewrite to get two cours (maybe even two seasons like Little Busters and Clannad). I'll be stunned if it gets anything less. For the record, Angel Beats is my favorite of the 13-episode bunch mostly because it got me the most emotionally invested (the number one thing I want out of a Key show).

I found you through your KyoAni studio analysis, and I've just finished watching through your reviews. I'm not sure where you want to go with your channel, but as a viewer I'll voice my thoughts here. The KyoAni video is the way I'd like to see your channel go. For starters, there are tons of people out there reviewing anime, while there are relatively few analysts. Now I'd say that you are one of the best reviewers I've seen (and I've seen most of them); you nail the conventional, very Arkada-y style, but keep it more concise than him. However, your analysis was stellar, it had an interesting premise, a great tone (assertive and self-confident while also being diplomatic and empathetic), and the actual insights, the shot analyses in particular were great. I am biased in that I find analysis to be far more interesting, and you're highly capable at both analysis and review. This is your channel and I have absolutely no problem with you doing with it what you will, but for what it's worth I'd like to see your content become at least a mix of analysis and review.

+Lachlan Still Moving forward, I want to achieve some level of balance between the two. I really enjoyed making the KyoAni video, but analysis is a bit more work/thought-intensive. So, for the sake of my schedule, I can't do it all the time and still put content out regularly (during the semester).

The thing that this show has that Misuzu was a completely tragic character who has no control of her fate. Clannad and kanon have tragic characters but they end up getting it back. Misuzu could never have any friends because of Kanna, she was always alone because of Kanna she had no control over anything. When she finally wasn’t alone she lost her life, Misuzu is one of the saddest characters I’ve seen and it makes her special because she has no way of controlling her own life. Show would’ve been perfect if it had 24 eps, 12 episodes is never enough.

I was in the same situation as you when I watched Air, and had the same opinion right afterwards, but over the years I actually came to appreciate it a lot more. The problem was that you were already jaded with Clannad XD Though I still agree it should have been done better AND with more episodes; that's really the root of the problem of this adaptation, honestly (the side-characters could've made this series a lot deeper). I wish KyoAni could go back and redo it someday :D Air actually has this feeling that it takes place in some sort of fantasy world, something you'd find straight out of children's book or a fairy tale, or even some classical poems or something. Things that happen don't necessarily have to make any sort of logical sense sometimes, like when Yukito turned into a bird. The medieval flashback itself is pretty much a kind of fairy tale, with the modern day (1000 summers later) being its conclusion at long last. I feel that this is reflected well in how they always keep showing the sky and the clouds, and also in its music. I know Kanon did some similar things but Air was going for a far more surreal and grander impression (Clannad, of which the original game was made four years later, ended up doing it better :P).

I enjoyed the imperfections. The first seven episodes introduced the atmosphere (the "air" so to speak) and lets you kind of figure things out at the same time the characters themselves do. The backstory from a thousand years back was the weakest part, but at least it explains what Misuzu is experiencing in her dreams and allows us to progress to the ending. The crow gives us a second chance to evaluate the story from new perspectives and lets Yukito fix the mistakes made along the way, and I was somehow able to be fully invested in the final two episodes, which left me quite devastated. My biggest disappointment was not seeing Potato revealed as some other reincarnation, lol.

The movie version Air is A LOT better than the series, being more succinct and enjoyable. The relationship between Haruko and Misuzu isn't as forced or rushed and the other minor characters have been shelved to concentrate on the main story, which isn't as nearly as confusing. Of the Holy Trinity, Air is definitely the weakest (the best being Clannad IMO) although I did like Misuzu's cute nihaha and gao, and Haruko as a character was a lot of fun. I found the music really beautiful too.

No matter what people say and what they review, Air was one of the very first anime that I saw years ago and fact is, it will always remain the closest to my heart no matter what anyone says. You really need to have a deep sense of understanding to realise what kind of masterpiece it is. The atmosphere, setting, soundtrack, characters everything made it so calm yet depressing at the same time. Tori No Uta should go down on history as one of the greatest anime opening themes. It just lifted up your soul and put you in a state of trance, where you'd be lost in your own thoughts. The only drawback regarding Air was, they should've made it longer. After all, that's the major reason people complain about it. The anime was too short, and hence neither could the story be conveyed clearly, nor did we get a chance to explore the supporting characters in depth.

Wow, trashing on AIR. I love AIR (obviously), and tried really hard to get into Clannad and Kanon afterward, too, but found them both to be too boring in their first few episodes, and quit. Maybe it was just a few slow starts, but AIR grabbed me right away when I first saw it, and I liked it enough to hang in there through the awkward back story stuff and the rest of the side character stories that made no sense. I think mostly Clannad and Kanon are "better" because they have the benefit of following AIR and adjusting things according to criticism. As a first effort - and especially at trying to make a coherent show out of a hentai game, I think it did outstanding, and like you said - those clouds! AND the music! And the animation, while a bit off at times, as you mentioned, really nailed it in important scenes. You can really tell the difference between the A and B team work, and I'm glad they chose so carefully where to make sure the best animation would come in. I'm sure it took a while for the animation teams to get used to Key's huge eyed style, but - again, as you said - they seemed to nail it in the next few installments.

I no longer had to figure out what made them important, or "key".

+r0kus No, that actually isn't what it means. Key is a visual novel studio that's made games including Air, Clannad, and Kanon. The Key adaptations are simply the anime adaptations of those visual novels. Kyoto is pronounced "Key-oto" by the way, though that's unrelated here.

This reviewer doesn't understand that this anime is supposed to make you think. ****Spoiler alert ***** Dude... the crow was unnecessary?! The back story of back in time was unnecessary? Excuse me but if I'm brutally honest the story went way past your head. It's apparent that it's meant for smarter minds you need to really think watching this anime it won't feed you all the information like a show that would be popular in America ;). It explains the curse misuzu has and how when touched dying or dead that curse is passed on to whoever touched the dying or dead person!!! If you notice, when Yukito goes to try and save Misuzu from the curse BUT NOTICE HE DOESNT TOUCH HER! He uses the puppet to try and make her laugh and save her, he can't actually save her but he lifts the side of the curse that can be passed on when someone close is with her in her dying moments. That turns yukito into a crow, he sacrificed his human life just to save misuzus aunt from getting the curse. Allowing misuzu and her aunt to be a family without getting the curse passed on when she was dying or dead. In summation, Yukito sacrificed himself so that misuzu and her aunt can be a close family without the aunt also getting sick from the curse. It's a very powerful story! It's a masterpiece! 10/10 This reviewer forgot to think when watching the show. The information isn't fed to you on a spoon you have to actually think and make sense of it. Wow Americans really are stupid! 😂

Celtic Man Your conclusion on Air is pretty solid. It does make the story have more sense now. *However*, (from my point of view), a story that makes one think is great, but don't make it too convoluted, as it detracts from the overall experience on the story. "Wow! Great! I know that the story is emotional and I feel it too! But why the fuck did the MC turn into a crow?!?!" Well, I got that the MC was cursed and would die because of it, but sacrificing himself so that the aunt would not get cursed? Really? That is too convoluted. This is a *STORY*, not the *Nicomechean Ethics*, a story needs tp be able to present its plot and message clearly (ot at least understandable) to its readers/listeners/watchers *Also* Calm the fuck down with the "American are stupid" bullshit......
@jnliewmichael4235
6 жыл бұрын
I think the "unnecessary parts" is partly bad execution and...... well, yeah, Air isn't "great", though if you don't think see the show having a "2 main characters", it's actually like a compilation of short stories that were done quite well and were neatly knitted together into a 12 episode series. I don't know if this is true or if it is just my perspective, but I have a nagging feeling that cultural differences might have made the 2-episode-reincarnation-arc and the first side story unbearable for those not so familiar with it. Another thing is... So your perspective was that the aunt & Misuzu arc should be focused more? I thought the VN was a romance VN.... (An eroge as well.......) That would mean changing the core premise of the story, which would be very weird, like changing Hellsing into a harem anime.... (the first example I thought of....) Huh... well... the comments on you missing stuff about Air are already there... then bye... I guess... Edit: Really? "Moe Shit?" Was this your "Moe is shit" emo phase on YT? Old video, I know, but yeah, I agree with most of your points. I do actually think the flashbacks explained a lot of what the hell was going on because before then, I'll be honest, nothing made any damn sense. That being said, yeah, as sad as their little side stories were and as much as I did like some of them, the rest of the characters aside from Misuzu, her mom, and Yukito were totally pointless. It's not even really explained very well why they are wrapped up in the supernatural stuff going on. I think AT MOST they say (SPOILERS) Kano has some sort of spiritual sensitivity that made her easily possessed, but the other girls...are just kinda effected for no reason. They don't have the backstory stuff that Yukito and Misuzu do to explain anything. Still to this day don't know what was going on with the crow thing. Was that ever explained and I missed it or was it seriously just out of nowhere? Anyway, given this is an adaption, I wonder if it just fell flat on its face and rushed the story. I wonder if things are explained better in the source material or if it was always a confusing mess

I'm not a fan of any of these adaptations, but I still think Air is by far the worst. Which sucks because it has multiple features that I really like. The fact that Haruko actively comments on how the "moe" behavior of her daughter is really strange is honestly something I wish more anime did.

I still have to disagree with the common complaint that Kano and Minagi should have been removed or don't contribute anything, and *especially* your extension of that to Kanna. Not only are the first two possibilities for Kanna's reincarnation Yukito looks into, and the third was the explanation of their original lives, the curse, and the reincarnation cycle (hence all three are important to the plot), they all tie into the theme of motherhood that the story's weight leans on. Kano blames herself for her mother's death and the subsequent parentification her sister went through. Minagi's distanced from her mother because of the latter's mental block on her identity to the point that *she* can't face who she is. Kanna's entire escape was not just about her freedom, but about reaching her mother. All of this is building up to the climax with Misuzu and Haruko, not detracting from it. Besides, skipping Summer arc? Nah. Extend it by watching the OVA in between the two episodes.

As an avid fan of the Key adaptations, I have to agree with most of the points you're making... Which makes me kind of sad, now that I think about all the flaws the show has. Either way, just because the drama genre simply is my cup of tea, I did enjoy Air a lot (and probably will even when I eventually watch it for the 4th time). Just for the record - and this is probably an unpopular opinion -, Air for me would be tied with Clannad season 1 as the weakest of the Key animes. Honestly, aside from Fuko, none of the other characters in that series really got me emotionally invested. But /then/ came After Story and swept everything else away.

this is probably the best example when of when a show bites more than it can chew, hence why it probably should have been at least 25 episodes long, according to most people. also i'm kinda interested in Kanon 06, and i guess i might watch Air sometime when i feel like experiencing what the holy trinity has to offer

Air, Kanon and Clannad are all from the same author Maeda Jun. If you have the feeling Air was a bit unpolished with huge potential, you are right as Maeda Jun tryed to explore an idea but didnt get it quite right in Air and Kanon until he nailed it with Clannad. In the 3 storys you can see Maedas growth as an author.

I know you probably won't read this but you have to know that kanon went actually before air: its visual novel was made in 1999 and had an anime adaptation in 2002 then a second one in 2006. Air's visual novel is from 2000 and has one anime adaptation of 2005.

I know this is an older review but god damn is this harsh😅😅. The use of each arc being tied together thematically felt great to me, it's so much more innovative then the others even if it does need more time😂😂

I think they should've made the Anime about twice as long because I've played the Visual Novel and watched the Anime and I've noticed that the story in the VN made more sense because it had more scenes that just didn't exist in the Anime adaptation. The flashback arc in the VN is done much better than in the Anime.

Ya I also felt crow part was unnecessary; if they have kept yukito; it wouldn't have made any difference. May be in that situation anime ending would have been better, more heart touching !!! And the part of father was also unnecessary

+Alexander McBane Lol if you want the gradual increase in quality, I'd go in release order (Air < Kanon < Clannad). BUT if you want my suggested viewing, I'd say start with Clannad then watch Kanon to try to fill the void.

+Ghost47 As someone who has watched both the series and the movie 3 times, I agree that I actually prefer the movie. I liked the tinge of romance it added, the way the ending unfolds (as opposed to that of the series), and the fact that it skipped both of the side arcs certainly did help in the case of Air.

The doll was infused with 1000 years of magic, hope, and experience. When Yukito begged for another chance, the stored magic found a way to grant his wish, and by reincarnating him as a non-human, he could stay by Misuzu's side without triggering the curse. Or at least, that's how I rationalized it. This is a story that kind of forces you to fill in some blanks for yourself.

Air didn't manage to structure its story well and focused too much on cringing moe. This is why I've never gone back to the show. But even after three years, the opening remains in my playlist (frequently on repeat) as the epitome of emotion, magnificence, and beauty. Misuzu's calling of "mom" also made the journey, at least for the moment, worth it.

Why do you say Kanon so weird? It's pronounced like "canon", but spelled with a K. Sorry, it bugged me. The video was good though, and I agree pretty much 100% with everything you said. Air by far was not as good as it could have been.

So you would give a show with forgettable cast, a plot which doesn't get anything done right, and only has a great atmosphere a score of 6 on MAL? It sounds like a 4 to me or a 2 put of 5 on your scale

I’m quite the opposite. I watch Air before Clannad. I got into Air because of their huge anime eyes, muzusu’s flowy yellow hair and the feels the anime give. Supernatural was out of place, and it doesn’t make sense. I think it is the charm of Air, not everything has to be explained. I watch clannad after but then I drop it because it seem like a regular harem high school anime. I even gave it a second chance and finished it. Still a boring anime compared to air.
