What I like is how he switches tactics: blasters aren't working, he rams Maximillian. Ramming only keeps him down so long, he lets Maximillian grab him and then drills into him. He keeps trying things until something sticks! Plus even if blasters aren't doing any direct damage, at least they're holding Maximillian's attention, so continuing to fire wasn't as dumb as it might sound at first.

Honestly, it seemed to me (implication-wise) that V.I.N.CENT knew full well that he couldn't take Maximilian in a straight fight-- remember that at the start what he did was charge Max and pin him to the wall, so the Palomino crew could get by him to the probe ship? Next, V.I.N.CENT started shooting at Max to get his attention, then *kept* shooting at him to *keep* his attention, so Max would go after him, and not chase after the Palomino crew.

VinCENT knew he was overmatched. But as Reinhardt had earlier made the comparison to David and Goliath, Goliath underestimated his opponent, and that's how he lost. No, not by a long shot. I saw "The Black Hole" at the tender age of Eight, and have been scarred ever since then. Seriously, to this day I cannot stand to have any red LCD clocks or displays in my personal environment. I remember coming home after seeing this movie at the Wayside Theater, in Ypsilanti, MI. We had only just gotten those early, *red* LCD clocks in my parents' home *literally* the day before, and I had never seen them in absolute darkness. According to my Mom, I took her housekeys from her, raced ahead to open the side door, and (according to my parents) upon seeing a distant, unfamiliar, red glowing light out in the far side of the darkness shrieked something along the lines of "It's Maximilian; He's going to kill us!" A rather traumatic and lasting incident it was, to the child that I was back then... To this day, I cannot *stand* glowing, red LCD *anything*, and I'm going to be 45 y. o. in a week's time. :-/ Yes, that same damned red LCD clock is still sitting, aglow, on my Dad's far kitchen counter. And yes, to this day it still sets me on edge, should I arrive back at his place in the wee hours of the morning and see it glowing malevolently in the darkness ...

Interesting theory. But if Max really was Kate's father, why would he want to kill her and the crew? I always thought Max was an extension of Reinhardt's violent personality and controlled him subconsciously. That's how he knew Kate had ESP with Vincent as he already had a bond with Max. However, he was secretly terrified of his own creation, hence why he says to Kate 'protect me from Maximilian. When he gets crushed by the giant monitor and cries out to Max for help, he doesn't abandon him, he goes after the crew to stop them and board the probe ship so he can escape. Reinhardt and Max share the same soul, which is why they merge at the end.

I remember going to see Star Trek: The Motionless Picture with my father as a child, and then not long after I saw The Black Hole with him, at my mother's insistence. I was bored to tears with TMP - a lot of adults were, so what hope did a child have? - but loved The Black Hole. Instead of finding common ground with me, my father denounced TBH as "puerile tripe," and basically dashed the one thing we MIGHT have had in common, a love of science fiction.

V.I.N.CENT vs Maximilian . . . Still scares me. Ugh. Both had a lot of character. More so than some of the characters in this movie. It's a shame Disney didn't decide to just create a film/animation studio that was allowed to tackle more mature themes. This movie wanted to be dark but wasn't allowed to. It's a shame. Probably could have made that movie that Disney wanted to do with Dali if his successors ever really cared about his vision. I think the old man would be grossed out most of the movies that his company makes now.

Personally, I Love The Black Hole so much and The Black Hole along with Moonraker, Time After Time, and 1941 with John Belushi are the most underappreciated films of 1979. The Black Hole as well as Moonraker, Time After Time, and 1941 from 1979 are all way much better films than any Star Wars film made after 1983's Return of the Jedi, the John Barry music scores for The Black Hole and Moonraker were both brilliant, and The Black Hole is a very underappreciated and great sci-fi Disney film. The Black Hole had awesome characters like Dr. Hans Reinhardt, Maximilian, Dan Holland, and V.I.N.CENT, the robot fight scene between Maximilian and V.I.N.CENT was excellent, and Roddy McDowall did a stellar job as V.I.N.CENT. I also love Moonraker, Time After Time, and 1941. Moonraker is a very underrated and awesome Roger Moore bond film, Time After Time was a brilliant time travel film, and 1941 with John Belushi was a very good Spielberg film. Overall, 1979 was one of the best movie years, I always liked The Black Hole, Moonraker, Time After Time, and 1941, and The Black Hole along with Moonraker, Time After Time, and 1941 are all great cult classic 1979 films.

I never knew this movie even existed, came here from Game Grumps. Yeah I know "Great more "came from Game Grumps comments" but this is the first time I'm making one and I did a ctrl-f search for grumps before making this comment. The robot crashing through the wall reminds me of Zero crashing through a screen and stuff in Sonic Adventure while chasing Amy.

The Black Hole along with Moonraker, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and 1941 with John Belushi are the most underappreciated films of all time, I always loved The Black Hole, Moonraker, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and 1941 from 1979, and The Black Hole as well as Moonraker, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and 1941 are all way more better films than any Star Wars film made after 1980's The Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars was never the same after Gary Kurtz left the franchise in 1980 and The Empire Strikes Back will always be the last great Star Wars film ever made by Irvin Kershner. The Black Hole is a very underrated and brilliant sci-fi Disney film, The Black Hole had excellent characters like Dr. Hans Reinhardt, Maximilian the Robot, and V.I.N.CENT, and The Black Hole just like Moonraker both had great music scores by John Barry. My grandmother got me the Disney record when i was about nine years old in 1981. Cool to listen to, but when The Movie Channel aired it, i found Maximilian to be pretty terrifying, especially after he killed Anthony Perkins' character.

I think Maximilian lost because he had been specifically designed to terrorize and kill people, not robots. His primary weapons, the spinning blades, are terrifying to humans but useless against VINCent. Maximilian was like a bully who won every fight he'd been in because he only picked fights with those who were essentially defenseless; the moment he went up against someone who wasn't afraid of him and could actually fight back, he got his butt whooped.

I wish George Lucas had watched this movie before handing over his prized Star Wars genre to Disney. Maybe then, he would’ve realized that any future movies in that line would be just as ridiculous as this one. I watched this one single time, and viewed it as a B-movie comedy.

Henchman: Uh... yeah we can do that in addition to the other-- Dr. Evil: No! ... just the little spinning claws.... Henchman: But... I mean, don't you think it will be a little underequipped if it ever needs to fight. Dr. Evil: LITTLE.... SPINNING!...... CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAWSZZZZZZZZZUH!

Maximilian should have been in Star Wars. He would have been perfect as a companion to Darth Vader. He even looked like the Imperial Guard, who are dressed in red, that guard Vader when he in his meditation chamber or Bacta Tank. Give him a couple light saber like General Grievous, instead of spinning blades, and a really cool voice.
