V-Ray 5 has GPU, OCIO, better plugin support ( tyFlow, FumeFX, PhoenixFD etc ), superior IPR ( cryptomatte masking in viewport*, post-process in viewport, real zoom and more ) also V-Ray is faster giving same looking results, Chaos Vantage ( realtime raytracing of your vray project but requires RTX GPU ), .vrscene which can be used to port projects into different softwares. V-Ray is clear winner, no contest here. Normally you use HDRI just for lookdev preview or background and for production model/sculpt full 3D ground/roads or simply integrate the assets into live footage/backplate as HDRI's are usually too blurry. Anyway here's way better method than Dome+Ground Projection HDRI which takes time to create but it's worth in the end as it can be used in any renderer or even software: kzitem.info/news/bejne/u3umyYWNj4iffJw

Hi thanks for your comment! I agree with everything you said, but the point I was trying to make is that certain things (as shown in my specific example) just work much easier in Corona compared to V-Ray and it is easier to get somewhere without the need of building a much more complicated and complex setup. The video you posted of course would be the gold standard to do your environment projection, but it takes time and this time often is not available in production. So in my example I demonstrated that with Corona it would be just pressing 2 buttons while in V-Ray you need to build a much more complex custom setup just to reach the same result. If you compare V-Ray vs. Corona on a feature by feature level of course V-Ray would be ahead. But it is not just the amount of features but also how you make them available. I'm a long term V-Ray user myself and was just quite amazed to see how easy you can get certain results in Corona without much experience. That was the reason for this video :-)

Hey, thanks for the insight. I'm a V-ray user and I haven't used Corona, so I didn't know any better until now. Your comparison makes V-Ray look really clunky in this scenario. On a side note in regards to this kind of setups: I've been doing it all wrong...like, omg, what am I doing. So, thanks for fixing that with this tutorial.
@JonasNoell
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, that it was not necessarily my intention to make V-Ray appear clunky. Actually I just noticed this huge gap in unsability when I tried out Corona and then tried to see how V-Ray would handle this basic task. It's probably a bit unfair to break it down on this point alone but still overall that is a little bit the impression when you try out Corona, some stuff works simpler and you can get to nicer results faster with less friction. Both are extremely capable renderengines and you can do all possible tasks in any of them, just in Corona it's probably easier for unexperienced artists to get a result faster. Also the whole tonemapping process is much easier in my opionion, but V-Ray overall has probably more options and flexibility in this regard. Well it's tough to simplify this topic in general, I guess both have their advantages and disadvantages in different scenarios. :) My feeling is that V-Ray once was extremely flexible (3.6) and for that reason not really userfriendly. In later versions the goal was to change that and flexibility was taken away (no unlinkable specular and reflections anymore, in General how V-Ray handles now specular and reflections, strong reduction of the GI algorithms, etc.) without necessarily increasing the userfriendliness. That's my feeling in a nutshell :) Just to understand, what have you been doing "wrong" before to set up something like this? Would be interesting to hear.

In V-Ray you actually need to play with the Ground projection a little more. And don't be afraid to use big numbers. For instance Radius 10000 and Ground position with Z (-5000). This works for me most of the time, but it varies from HDRI to HDRI.
@JonasNoell
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I will try out some bigger values for the radius but I assume it probably would just stretch out the ground very far which will probalby distort all of your ground textures. For negative ground position in Z axis your subject would floating above the floor and you can not move the camera around because the floor would be sliding underneath it. This doesn't cause any issues to you in your workflow?
@vizintini
3 жыл бұрын
@@JonasNoell yes indeed. Is not as good as Corona because the dome is not bound to the camera. It works for stills, but if you want to animate the camera you will have issues. If you want to change the angle you will also need to readjust the settings (scale, radius.. depending on your hdri).
@JonasNoell
3 жыл бұрын
@@vizintiniHi, yes exactly, that for me personally is a big issue, because for lookdev I just want to place my model in the environment and move the camera around from all angles. For stills it might be less of an issue. But in this case then I still have the issue that HDRI reflections are always infinitely far away and thus look wrong in terms of scaling. Anyway for me personally the workaround with the geometry dome and custom projection works best, it's just a little bit of work to set it up and it's frustrating to see that in Corona it is fully implemented and just takes 2 clicks :-) Thanks for your feedback!

You have to eyeball it, because the one in the light is spherical projection and the one for the geometry done will be explicit map channel with spherical UV's. You can use the texture offset to align it to the domelights position. It also would need to be mirrored if I remember correctly...

Great video! Why is there actually a dark camera angle specific shading on the dome in the viewport? Is this from the projection? But why doesnˋt it show up in the final rendering? Keep on the good work!
@JonasNoell
3 жыл бұрын
That is just in the viewport as there are 2 camera dependent lights to light up the geometry and this always creates this dark edge on the spherical geometry for some reason. Also in the viewport the LightMaterial is not displayed correctly. In the rendering it uses a LightMaterial which basically is 100% SelfIllumination.

Hi Jonas, I followed what you said in your video but my floor (shadowcatcher) doesn't work (for the simple Corona solution), it looks stretched and not correct in the mapping sense. - what type of UVW mapping did you apply to your plane to get the look on that to work ? Without any mapping applied to that shadowcatcher plane, I just get a texture of the HDRI image as a plane......Thanks.
@JonasNoell
3 жыл бұрын
I guess you would need to chose a different projection mode. The floor should have a CoronaShadowCatcher Material applied to and the projetion mode should be set to !environment projection onto geometry". Technical you don't need any UVW mapping for the shadowcatcher plane when you use the shadowcatcher material.

@@JonasNoell Hi Jonas, I did it exactly as you said. the ground on that shadowcatcher is distorted. Thanks for getting back to me.
@JonasNoell

@@Jez2008UK First hide you shadowcatcher geometry and use only the light, so you don't have any shadow under your object. Does everything look fine then? You need to first play with your radius and tripod height. If you use any hdri that has objects very closeby then you might not be able to get rid of those distortions. Best use some hdri with a wide ground like a big emty parking lot or something like this. Once you don't have distortions you can add the groundplane and apply the shadowcatcher and everything should look like before except that you have a shadow now.
