@kjonesz

No conventional American small block is going to turn over 8k from the factory reliably. I would put my bottom dollar that if you took a never opened 302 or 289 either would be torn up by the 3rd pass. Stock motors are normally terribly balanced from the factory due to the mass production. So if it’s not the balance I would guess the rod bolts would begin to back out by around 7k. And if not the rod bolts a valve would without question kiss a piston with the stock springs and timing set. So if you seen a 302 do that I would imagine they lied about their motor.

No one expects 5.4L out of an engine that has smaller dimensions than a DOHC V6! Because the lifters, pushrods, and single cam sit inside the block, It keeps things really compact. The downside is, with all the moving mass and weight of the lifter/pushrod/rocker stuff it's impossible to get these things to really breathe without intense valvetrain refinement. Even 5k can be nothing but valve float and pain! All that said, here is a 5.8L Windsor in its natural habitat at LeMans: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o5-v2qGCk6OqnG0

This engine was really built for boost. I just remove turbo and change to NA cam. This engine was 4.030 bore and 3.25 stroke bringong it tp 331ci. TFS 11r cnc 205cc heads with custom na cam, 90 tb 1 3/4 lt headers 9.6cr. To make it a true na setup would have been better with bigger bore to 4.125 with 10.5cr. 190cc Heads may have helped too.
