I am the owner/ builder of this motor. No it did not seize. The fuel pump was leaking and the idle screws were screwed in too far. Maybe this was the reason I had to keep pumping it to keep it going. To give you an update on the motor, we have made and fitted extractors. The motor idles very smoothly and revs very quick when you hit the throttle. I know it runs well so now I have built a second motor with higher potential. It has twin spark plugs and bigger rotor timing and I am hoping to have it finished in about 4 months. Within a year I am hoping to start selling these motors. A bit about me. My name is Ian Walker. I have had my own engine reconditioning business - Lilydale Engine Reconditioners in Melbourne Australia since 1979. This motor is a hobby for me and has been built over the last 3 years.

Hey, I understand. People who build engines know what can happen. Are you going to make Head/drive kits for existing V8s or is this a completely new engine? (block, crank, etc.) I'll keep you in mind. Just imagine a big stack injection on this turning 12k in a can-am race car!

Ian, Please ignore the naysayers, and keep experimenting. I love it. For what it's worth, I envisioned a rotary valve engine that had electric motors, or something similar, powering the valves. The motor(s) would be controlled by the engine computer. It could vary the valve timing to meet any condition the driver calls for. Smooth idle, low speed torque, high speed horsepower and so on. Something like a crankshaft position sensor that cars use now could sense the position of the valve, and feed info to the computer. All my best wishes to you.

@Atropus Arbaalish Pushrods are fine for larger low sped engines. Rotary valves remove the reciprocating valves so nothing can bounce at high revs. They also remove the valve head so give no restriction of gas flow. It would be good to see air flow comparisons using a vacuum flow bench.

The spherical rotary valve engine has been around for a bit, Coates Engineering ( I think that's the name ) was one of the first to do it, but the OEMs never picked up on it. Guess it worked to well.

It works best with small dimensions and alcohol as fuel. Gasoline is harder on the sealing parts and I doubt is has the durability for mass production techniques to guarantee. It's been done with model aircraft engines, they however have a high percentage of lubricating oil in the fuel along with some nitromethane.

What a beat!!! With a little tuning you've got one bad azz engine. Great build!! Oh, Dom, the fire you see coming out the headers is unburnt fuel being ignited when the exhaust ports open. My Gixxer shoots mad flames due to larger carbs and stage 3 jets, high compression and high energy ignition. In any case with combustion engines, a lean tune might get you an extra couple hp but you run a very high risk of piston lock do in most cases like mine and in this video, it's safer to run a little rich than lean. It's the reason when adding NOS to a engine, if you run anything higher than a 75hp jet, you add fuel do not to out out too far and blow it up. Hope that helps, that's going to be a BOSS motor once tuned right. I'd like to see it with a good tune in a dyno or under a hood. Great build!!!

Looks like another major step for internal reciprocating engines. Often thought about a rotary valve camshafts over the years, but how to seal it effectively ? Seems to be quite obtainable. Looks great. However on a side note I noticed at the front of the engine on the bank shown in video, the exhaust flame was much less than the other 3 compared. Could that be a lul spot in that particular plenum. Maybe it kicks in fine when rpm increases?

Just found this one. Rotary valves seem to be a bit of an Aussie thing. Dunstan Engineering in Adelaide built rotary valve heads for the early Holden engines in the mid/late 1950's. The way I remember it, or the way it was told to me, they built three versions. The first two were driven from the rear for use in boats while the third was [allegedly] driven from the front for automotive applications. The main problem, apparently, was that the con rods stretched & pistons touched the head. Well, with a 12,000rpm capability I'm surprised the engines didn't 'auto dismantle' in a somewhat spectacular way. Modern Motor Magazine did an article on them back in the late '50's [1958???] I have a copy somewhere.

Funny. I've given it a lot of thought recently only to find now it was done over a decade ago. I don't know the details of this assembly; but what I had in mind was two shafts a head (1 for Int, 1 for Ex) both like rotating cross-bored spools. Without lift there can only be duration and I assume the size of the spool bores would equate to that; and with twin shafts per head I think the overlap could be more of a workable variable. Certainly an interesting development you have there Ian.

I really had alot of hope for this cylinder head technology after seeing an article in CarCraft magazine when I was a kid (mid 90's)... Since then, the future perceived from then that is the reality of now isn't exactly hoverboards, nor have I seen many cases where this technology went past true tinkerer's where some invested a significant amount of machining for prototypes, but I'd like to understand where the weakest link is? IIRC, in a more recent video, where this talented European man tried to convert a single cylinder engine to a rotary valve. It was a fight to keep compression, which couldn't entirely be attributed to the technology itself, but rather a possible flawed prototype from an exhausted man dying to see this thing work.

I would love to see an update on this. I want to get into designing my own engine but I don't know where to start since I don't have a machine shop
The patient was sold to someone in Australia in around 1980. The initial motor was said to be a chrome molly steel plate Hemi bottom end style. Bill sadly passed away in around 1990. He worked on it and I believe he did not design it 2 others were involved. Bill made a successful chrome molly plate motor for a fuel funny car it did well but conventional heads.

I can see how a Coates valve would provide incredible RPM range. But I can't see its longevity. I would assume that as soon as those tolerances falter you lose all your compression. I imagine you would get AMAZING quarter mile times though!!! Dont take this as a criticism your work is way beyond any engine I've built. And I wish you success on this wild endeavor.
