I OWN A 1973 VW SUPER BEETLE It has a Twin Turbo Porsche Carrera Engine and Transmission in it and looks like at standard VW, It was built by Wolfgang Boober in Mainz Germany. My 10th lap at the Nurnberg Ring was 202mph and I still hold the record from the 70's I believe. I still have it. I like yours. My floor and chassis was modified also. I drove it to the track and home never spun a tire but in the 1/4 mile 8.9@156mph. Fun Fun. Lots of Maintenance. Did that when I was in the ARMY. With Air Conditioning.

Mercmad it is amazing how many persons are repeating crap like that, or that Hitler designed it. Dozens of similar designs were made at the time @ Tatra, Horch, Puch, NSU and others, but only his aplication stood the test of time. He was one of the few geniouses in automotive industry who knew not only to design properly, but also to manage a team to follow that thru and make perfect product.
@Mercmad
6 жыл бұрын
It's not "crap"as you so stupidly put it, . VW got sued by the Ringhoffer family who basically owned the Tatra company.. Ledwinka was not named in the patents. VW had to pay out because Porsche who had been working for Hans Ledwinka in the early 1930's in Bohemia was busy stealing designs .Eventually ,Hitler had his prize designer Porsche put together a proposal for Kdf to consider as peoples car.One of many that were put forward by others too. , But once the first few were built and technical details of the Volkswagen were made public, Tatra officials began examining the design for evidence of patent infringement - which they found in abundance. Tatra’s lawyers began preparing a case against KdF but were to be overtaken by events as in March 1939, Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. Under the Nazi administration Tatra had no legal recourse to sue the state owned German car manufacturer. In 1938 the Nazis had regulated the German auto industry under the Schell Plan. Vehicle designs were standardized and duplication of models removed to free up industrial capacity for war production. Following the annexation, Germany bought Czechoslovakia’s industries under their centralized control. The Nazis had no need for Tatra’s streamlined supercars and Tatra’s automobile division was shut down and the company instructed to build trucks, trains and diesel engines for the German army. The Lawsuit remained on the books and in 1965 VW was forced to admit liability and paid out 1,000,000 DM. To put matters into Perspective, a family member of mine , is today a well known Professor of industrial Design,and Worked at porsche design for 25 years as a designer ,so I got to know the story well before you were born probably.
@DomWeselnyBrzozieLub
6 жыл бұрын
Mercmad you think that if you put a lot of words in your answer it will confuse people. Tatra have aquired dozens of pattents for rear-engined vehicles in 20's and 30's in all possible configurations in order to restrict access of competition to the market. It is a practice not allowed today. Tatra never filled law-suit against KDF-wagen producers or Porsche. After war once VW become sucessfull everybody were suing the company claiming they were victims of what use to be nazi company. VW for example was also forced to honor KDF-savings plan, although that money was stolen by USSR communists government from Berlin bank. VW did not lost court case, but have settled claim to avoid publicity of involvement in events during nazi regime. By the way, If you know "real" story, like most of YT users, from before i was born, then i congratulate you on god health, because you must be in your 80's.
@Mercmad
6 жыл бұрын
As for my age ,you are not far wrong, but i digress. As for writing lots of words. You obviously have a problem understanding what i wrote. The Family who owned Tatra, despite living in a communist country ,bought about patent infringement actions because it was obvious that Porsche not only stole the ideas used in his KdF car design .A good example( besides the airducting principles) , was the flat four air cooled air cooled engine. On my Workshop floor is Tatraplan Four cylinder engine . It is simply a bigger VW engine and looks like a type 3 engine despite having been designed decades before the VW. , The wheels from a beetle bolt directly onto a Tatra, including the tatraplan and 603. This because The hub design Porsche used for years on his own cars and VW used is taken directly from the Righolfers patents. So ,you have some more Words to digest,eat slowly and perhaps it might just become clearer to you. Porsche was a nazi, he used the typical Nazi tactic of the time, steal it use it and no one will be able to stop you. For this he spent time in prison after the war before retreating to the Porsche Estate in Austria.

Absolutely love this channel and build! With so many gearheads out there and the high quality of your videos and content, you absolutely deserve many more followers! As another (much less talented!) engineer, I'd love to know how much of the design has been finalized in CAD and analysis first - clearly the chassis at least has some CAD behind it, but how much, if any, of this is "figure it out as you go?" I also saw in an earlier episode that there's at least a rollover hoop, but is there going to be a more substantial full cage involved? Seems like the hoop alone doesn't give a lot of fore/aft support without additional bracing. Keep making amazing progress!

Great stuff. With either beetle body, do you plan to vent the fenders? They act like wings and actually lift the car from all the turbulent air from the spinning wheels (makes beetles unstable and higher speeds). Modern cars use fender liners to reduce the area between the tire surface and the underside of the fenders or race beetles for years have punch and flared the rearside of the fenders.
