Actually, Valentina combines the piano solo version with the orchestral version in a number of spots like 8:46 to 9:40. It's pretty effective.

Once Liszt told a student who was playing the héroïque polonaise: "I don't care how fast you can play those octaves - I want to hear horses galopping menacingly". Totentanz - death laughing and dancing in our face. At first it seems like he is dancing alone, but soon enough we join him without being conscious of it. And rather than being afraid, we will come to realise that without him we could not be. V. Lisitsa is a good pianist, but to my ears the only really inspired performance of this piece is that of Michelangeli. Cheers!

This is sooo impressive! I personally think that if you look at the date of the concert and take in consideration the pianist's views and what was happening that time - which fully corresponds the topic and name of the piece being played - you will probably understand her emotions behind this rendition. My observation only, not trying to impose any point of view.

Can you explain? What was happening at the time?
@s-dyorindyorin-s149
@@derickyyy Totentanz literally means "Dance of the deadmen", the concert is about a week after the start of military clashes in Eastern Ukraine between coup-d'etat government in Kiev with far-right views and pro-Russian rebels. Lisiza being a Russian from Ukraine publicly supported pro-Russian forces in social media and was even banned from some concert programs with North American orchestras for that. 7 years afterwards I personally believe that all parties involved in the conflict, including Kiev, Washington, Kremlin, EU, pro-Russian rebels and far-right Ukrainian nationalists were (and are) badasses and motherf*ckers, including the most involved US-politican and the now POTUS Joe Biden of course, but back that days of course all Russians supported the rebels.

Valentina Lisitsa is such a talented pianist, but why, why, why the heck does she cheat so much????????????? on bar 238, she played the e,f, and d flat with only one hand when it's supposed to be played with both hands, she just kept her left hand in the lowest register. On the double thirds scale, she left out notes on the endings. In the last section where numerous scale passages occur, she skips a whole chunk of notes and jumps right back down to the bass. And also, in variation one, bar 68-70 you're supposed to hold the outer notes and play the inner notes in a staccato fashion, but she didn't, she let go of the outer notes using pedal to cover it up. Last of all, the biggest cheat, she is playing the solo version, NOT the orchestra version.
