Thats the magic of post processing and global ilumination or also called volumetric lightning my friend. That's why even on ps1 textures you have a sense and feel of space and profudity. I learned all this stuff a few years ago messing around with unity and unreal, the importance of the scene building, lightning setup, climate, etc, they are more important than graphics in to contribute to have a live scene that's intriguing and make you wonder for every corner. i remember downloading the best quality assets, 4k textures, pbr shaders, all that good expensive stuff, but if you dont know how to setup properly the scene, and create a interesting atmosphere, its feel like dull, like if the assets are on a shelf, zero interest. So at the end of the day, graphic fidelity and quality in therms of texture and shaders, all that, is the final touch of a game.
@fvkijay

@@alan138 You're right. I think, ordinarily, those effects are extremely expensive, so the devs recognized that in an open world setting (and third person character), people tend to pay less attention to close up textures and details. That allowed them to craft something much more immersive than high end games with AAA budgets. It does become more noticeable in the early dungeons, but even then, only if you are consciously looking for it.

Totally agree. I have 1500+ hours in Valheim and eagerly await the next biome. That being said, to me, the reason you can't compare those two games is because their intended gameplay experiences are inherently different. I think calling Enshrouded a survival game does it a disservice because people go into the game expecting and comparing it to Valheim. I certainly did. It was such a shock when I played the dem that I wrote a whole KZitem reply to a video stating how it just didn't have the same environment or feel to it. It felt empty and disconnected. Well, it turns out there is a reason for that. Enshrouded is much more Breath of the Wild than Valheim. Once you start playing it like an open world adventure game with an added (best in the business) building system, the game completely transforms. But you don't HAVE to do anything. You don't have to make and use food. If you skip food in Valheim you did a thousand horrible deaths. You don't have to build in Enshrouded. If you don't build in Valheim then...you dead. The progression into new biomes aren't abjectly terrifying due to the design of being under geared and homeless when you enter the new biome. In Valheim, just taking a boat ride to try to locate a new biome puts you in hyper vigilant mode, and for good reason: serpents can kill you and force multi hour corpse retrievals and move too close to a plains biome and you are mosquito food with an even more difficult corpse retrieval. In Enshrouded, at least at this point it's developmental, none of that is even in the design. What is in the design is an open world absolutely stuffed with amazing locations that you find on your way to a quest....only to be sidetracked for hours as you make your way to that original quest marker, just like BotW.

@@Mhantrax I feel this 100%. I hopped in Enshrouded hoping it would be like a custom map version of Valheim with Dark Souls-like dungeons, but it does feel more like Breath of the Wild for sure. As much as I love Zelda though, this game lost my interest not too far in. Mostly because the building for me felt very limited in comparison and also, since the game starts you off at the bottom of a pre rendered map, hopping in a public server was a mistake, as I quickly realized the first few areas were completely looted and world progression was already pushed outwards. On top of that, building a base feels very detached. Yeah I can fast travel, but the further in game you go, the further you feel away from a main base unless you're trying to dispurse outward in smaller camps, or build a base further out but with the consequence of the area being overleveled. In Valheim, the world is eternally explorable since it's procedurally generated. You get the gist of the biome and know what's in it, but the layout is always different. In Enshrouded and BoTW, you really only explore the map once unless you play again at a later day in life after forgotten. So I mean having a static map is cool and all, but it's easily exploitable by veteran players (which I'm sure by NOW there are some lol)

@@MhantraxI think we can distill your comparison between the two games a bit. In Valheim, all of the game mechanics matter, in Enshrouded they don't. A good game design is one where the development effort you are spending on the game is impactful to the player. The Enshrouded engine has a lot of cool capabilities, but they aren't always put to use in service of the gameplay. By comparison, BotW, ToK, and Valheim, or any other great game, the resources and time spent developing the game went into things that were gameplay centric. It makes no sense to build an amazing voxel engine, if the gameplay that you then implement on top of it, doesn't really lean into it. They spent an enormous amount of time on that technology and the building systems.... but gameplay wise, building is highly optional? What?

Love them both. Valheim has more of a sense of danger and meaning to base building though. Yeah after I place some natural walls and maybe a moat around my base the enemies can't reach me... but at least they try and some threat exists that has to be dealt with. With Enshrouded it's fun to build a base but it's only for storage/spawn and not defense in anyway. 45 degree angles would be nice as well, 90 degrees is all you get in Enshrouded. The other big difference for me (I am talking vanilla only) is how punishing dying in Valhiem is compared to Enshrouded. If I don't keep a backup set of gear I am going to potentially have to pull off some real bullshit to get my stuff back. With Enshrouded my "critical" items like armour and weapons are retained after death, so retrieving that body is not the alt+f4 inducing experience Valheim can bring.

Haven't play Enshrouded yet, but I can feel the pace between these 2 games is just so different. From the video alone it makes me feel that Enshrouded tilts toward RPG more than actual survival game, while Valheim will make you rationing your resources, training your discipline to maintain your stamina so you don't screw up yourself, even the game forces you to do more exploration in different biomes because you always need something from somewhere even when in the endgame. The best of all, Valheim is like around 1GB for me to download, and it baffles me how such a good game with low fidelity can give me immense immersion while having a blast with friends. The best thing so far I've done with my friend is hauling a cart filled with precious ores while being chased by a horde of random monsters and we keep yelling at each other.

I think Valheim just has much more substance and feels more like a complete game. The bosses in Valheim are vastly superior. Game progression is also superior. Every new weapon you get feels like a big deal, like getting a new sword in a Zelda game. It’s got that type of feel to it. Whereas in Enshrouded, it’s just like “oh cool. A new weapon.” Valheim also feels more dangerous and challenging. Enshrouded might look flashier and it does have really good building but in my opinion, the building is the best thing it has to offer and that’s not enough for me. Valheim is the better complete package.

While there are interesting similarities and comparisons to be made, Valheim has more replayability hands-down. This is because Enshrouded's map is not randomly generated and after you have finished the game, it is just the same map again if you want to do it again.
@sonoftristram

It's just the different biomes and boss locations being in different places but other than that Valheims worlds feel pretty much the same every time simply because the world gen isn't that exciting. Mistlands are a nightmare to traverse but biomes are pretty much the same in every run. Love Valheim but I prefer a well made handcrafted map that filled with interesting locations than a randomly generated one that always feels the same.
@Sin_Alder
7 ай бұрын
I'd argue that it hampers Valheim's replayability. All a randomly generated map means is a bland map devoid of personality. Procedural generation is nowhere near powerful enough yet to make particularly interesting maps in most cases, and it certainly applies to Valheim. It might help for game where you're expecting to play short runs over and over again, such as roguelikes (for example, Binding of Isaac or Slay the Spire), but it works against games like Valheim, where the expectation, generally speaking, is to spend longer on a single playthrough, with possible later playthroughs for people once they eventually get bored with where they were in the game. More variety is not even remotely similar to more quality. For some gameplay loops more variety, regardless of quality, is the lifeblood, but for open world survival games (particularly one where you can either respawn or are likely to survive for long periods of time), quality becomes far more important.

I then traversed an alien landscape, conquering sea dragons, swamp things, and blizzard glitches. I joined Warduna, chanting something lost. My room mate told me to stfu, it's 3am. I said cool. I can dig through a mountain in enshrouded. Automatically better. Jokes aside, both games are great and I have many hours is both. Valheim building takes more ingenuity and you really have to pay attention to structural integrity. Better snapping too, imo. I do love how enshrouded voxels work when building, though. Graphics aren't everything, but enshrouded does look better. Valheim has a weight system, something I can't stand. Sailing was awesome in Valheim. Hopefully enshrouded get mounts of something one day since water doesn't seem to exist unless you have a well. I honestly have to give the edge to enshrouded. It has quests, a more fleshed out story (with more to come I"m sure) and an RPG element. The map looks to only be a 1/3 complete as well. Many places you cannot enter yet. If the devs for enshrouded keep adding to the game it will be second to none.

Lastly, you don't really need to take care of your home in Enshrouded because it will never be in danger of attacks. Enshrouded is 90% typical RPG and 10% survival crafting.

You are not comparing much of Enshrouded past very early game, nor all the options of doing things like cooking, or mining ore. These are both great games, in different and similar ways at times. Both open worlds, but Enshrouded is a crafted world that is more fleshed out with rpg elements. Valheim procedurally generated is random, but empty of unique locations, numerous npc, story missions, and crafted locations. Valheim big loss is it's taking over 18 months for 1 biome. I hope Enshrouded doesn't do the same thing because I look forward to updates for it. They are different games in regard to multiplayer also. People need to stop thinking Enshrouded should be the same and realize it's a CO-OP multiplayer design. It's not open PVP like Conan. The story is you are the survivors trying to rebuild. It's not exiled criminals like Conan, or Valheim's prove yourself worthy individually story. It's a co-op adventure in a sandbox filled with themepark quests. Enshrouded uses it's own game engine, which is impressive. I give them points on that. Valheim wins on trees falling on heads though. If that's your focus, I can't argue with that. The shroud is better than how Mistlands is though. That Mist is annoying in Mistlands. I feel the shroud mist is a better balance.

Progression to cook multiple foods comes way too late in Enshrouded, cooking pot should be allowed way earlier. Maybe limit recipes until one progresses. Dungeons in Enshrouded are weird, but I also view the Shroud Wells as dungeons. I got ridiculously addicted to Valhiem when it released. During COVID and leaving Uni I played around 150 hours in 2 weeks. I love Valhiem and it seems to very much be the sentiment shared by other comments here. That being said, the game is way more limited than Enshrouded. The lower fidelity worked great for atmosphere in Valhiem and should have allowed it to add more content and features but while there have been some updates they come at an absolute crawl. Many of the systems in Valhiem are still half baked. Enshrouded is still early and still has much they need to add but even as it is, it has far more features than Velhiem. They both definitely scratch the same itch for me in gameplay but Valhiem can be tedious in ways that enshrouded seems to shine. Inventory management, menu systems, loot drops, building control options, these are things that Enshrouded objectively outperforms Valhiem over which has nothing to do with the gamedesign but simply with player experience and usability. Plus, as of now, Enshrouded's latest update has added a whole slew of new customisation features. If you're in this comment section to judge between the two games and have been interested in my comment for a recommendation I'd say to pick Enshrouded. Valhiem was incredible when it released as there wasn't really anything like it. Enshrouded learnt a lot from their success and built upon it to develop a new vision. The Enshrouded devs also seem to have a much better workflow and direction for what they're making so updates are both regular and substantial. Pick whichever you want of course but i think many of the comments here are just oddly defensive about Valhiem as if for some reason people need to defend the memories they built in that game against those who recommended Enshrouded. Final thing, if you're worried about Enshrouded not having a procedural map, don't be. There's far more variety in it because it's actually been created with intention. Even in early access the playable area is huge and has a wealth of secrets with no shortage of beautiful views and scenery. While valhiem is a beautiful game, don't make the mistake of thinking each new play through or world will have drastically different visual styles or that it will effect your gameplay. Unless you're the type to play in servers with others that put in 500+ hours to each world, you'll probably explore far less of the valheim world than you do Enshrouded. It's just the way the games play out in the end.

Even fog tries to kill you in Valheim. Had to sit in my boat in the ocean moving absolutely no where for 20 minutes because fog came and my boat was almost destroyed.

What? Fog doesn't kill you, violent waves destroy boats but not fog

I'm kinda surprised, but it seems everything is better in valheim except digging and the UI look. even the higher resolution textures look somehow tacky compared to valheims pixelated yet weirdly super realistic look.

Agreed! So many games go for as detailed of textures as possible (regardless of whether the lighting can match it to make it feel real) while Valheim is very deliberately stylized, and feels so much more immersive without realistic textures

Valheim has physics related to the real world especially for building, Enshrouded you can build floating things out of your wildest dreams. Valheim however random generated map every new game, and Enshrouded, same map every new game.

Digging...I want to dig. I want to dig an intricate maze system in a mountains, set up a base there, and listen to dungeon synth. WHY can't I do that in Valheim? Why are the tunnels there so terrible? I don't get it.

Because you now have Enshrouded to do it in 😁

that's the one thing I miss too. but they'd have to recode the world generator to fix that, and it would probably be heavier to run. which would be super problematic with as dense vegetation. maybe next game they make?

@@babstra55Perhaps this is a feature of game engines. Enshrouded is developed on its own Holistic engine. Valheim is developed on Unity. Although, I absolutely don’t understand why in Red Faction (2001 !!!) it was possible to dig any cave by c4 explosives, but not in Unity in 2024

There are no tunnels in Valheim- it makes it much easier to clean a lot of terrain quickly is why…
