Ramayan is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahabharata. Written by the great sage Valmiki, Ramayan narrates the life of Ram, prince of the legendary kingdom of Kosala.
Valmiki Ramayan consists of six parts called Kands, starting from Bala Kand, where the story begins before Ram's birth, early education, and Sita's swayamvar. Ayodhya Kand covers Kaikeyi's demands, the resulting exile of Ram, Lakshman and Sita, Dashrat's death, and Bharat's attempt to bring Ram back. Aaranya Kand shows their life in exile, Sita’s abduction by Ravan, the king of Lanka, and the beginning of the search for Sita. Kishkinda Kand depicts Ram’s friendship with Sugriv and Hanuman, Bali's death and the deployment of the monkey army to help find Sita. Sundar Kand focuses on Hanuman's journey to Lanka and his triumph over many obstacles to successfully find Sita and bring the news back to Ram. The Yudh Kand concludes the Valmiki Ramayan with Ram and his army reaching Lanka, the ensuing battle resulting in the defeat of Ravan and his army, culminating in a epic 7 day battle between Ram and Ravan where good prevails over evil in the end.
