So over the last couple of years, we have had some progressive issues with our black tank closing all the way. In order for a temporary fix, I installed an external valterra valve. If you hadn't seen the video on that I'll share it up in the corner. I will say that I started with the screw-on type, but I didn't feel it was secure, so I put a screw into it. But I did happen to put the screw right through the gasket. I had to redo it because it started leaking and I do much prefer the glue-on type which is what I changed it to later. I feel like it is much more secure and I don't feel like it may just fall off going down the road. This did fix the main problem I was having and that was a couple quarts of brown water hitting you when you open the cap to attach the hose. However, I the problem that remained was that if I just needed to drain out a little gray water, it was impossible not to have at least some contamination of the black water. This problem worsened and worsened until it was mostly black water.
Let's talk about the problem...
After doing some research on common valve failures I realized that a lot of failures are due to the cable systems on these cable-driven valves. These valves have very specific installation instructions, which are oftentimes not installed properly at the factory. These restrictions include a certain length of cable that should not have a bend in it as well as the maximum degree of bend that should be placed in the cable. With my valve cable handle moving very little I felt strongly that this was the problem that we were battling. I had previously tried putting some vegetable oil in the toilet as I had read this can lubricate the valve some. I didn't have any luck with this personally. I just felt like this was mainly a problem with the cable. This ended up being correct as when I removed the valve, it worked fine as far as the function of the valve, so the problem was in the cable.
Now let's talk about the solution. For most things, I've actually been turning to more mechanical solutions and trying to get away from electronic solutions. However, with the valves, my thought process is that a 12-volt wire can maneuver easier through the underbelly and connect to the valve with fewer issues than a cable valve. The electronic valves are more expensive, but I feel that they will work a lot longer without the issues that are inherent with cable systems.
Installation:
I'm actually going to do a separate video with Shelburne RV about the installation of these valves.
My impressions so far...
I will say that Valterra sent me these valves for no charge for an honest review. At first, I was unsure how I liked the design of the valve. Essentially, it is a standard pull valve with an electronic component that pulls the handle. Steve over at Shelburne's pointed out the fact that it was a good choice for the design. This way if the valve itself breaks you can replace it with a standard valve and those parts will be easier to get than more specialized parts which may be harder to find. You can also manually override the electronic part of the valve and open and close it manually with the handle should a problem arise with the switch. The switches are very responsive and the valves open and close pretty quickly.
