The process consists mainly of batteries dismantling, their classification, size reduction of cathode active material and leaching of waste LiCoO2. To recover cobalt, the sample initially crushed in a scutter-crusher where the particle size of the material gets reduced and was further beneficiated to separate plastics, black powder and metallic contents. The black powder obtained was then processed by hydrometallurgical processes consisting of leaching to recover the metals as valuable products. The process was optimized by varying different parameters such as acid concentration, pulp density, temperature, etc. The slurry obtained was filtered and washed. Leach liquor generated was further employed to separate impurities using precipitation followed by solvent extraction depending on the concentration and composition of the solution. The pure solution of cobalt so obtained was then evaporated to get cobalt sulfate as value added product. Metal sheets of cobalt were also produced by using electro-winning technique.
