Recently bought the matte surface DVDs on Gnomon and liked them very much. Great tutorials and step by step instruction giving you a lot of information to understand matte surface rendering.

There is always a chance, but I have not had any invites yet and so it has not been on my list of places to schedule a workshop. We would need a school or company to host us so we can have a good space for the workshop.

The vehicle is basically a matte surface so I'm not reflecting the background. If you need a logical reason for the value behind the vehicle just image it as a large area being dropped into shadow by a structure that's out of frame that we cannot see or realize that when doing quick stylized color and value sketches it's ok to exercise your artistic license and build value structures that help your image to communicate better.

That triangle brush is one Danny Gardner made and he gave me to use. Not sure either, but I like it.

I think that has to do with PS running out of available value steps. Two ways around this, you can try to increase the value range in that area so there are more values for PS to pick from or try working in 16 bit versus 8 bit.

Thanks Andrea, I was in the second mode setting. Hit "f" to toggle between them. It might have looked like the basic one because I changed the BG color I think. You can pick the paint bucket tool and hold down "shift" and then click on the BG to change the color to whatever you want.

Go to your tablet's properties settings through windows and adjust the "tip feel" option, the closer you put to the firm side the more pressure it will take to get the full amount of color. Also play around in Photoshop brush settings under Transfer, setting opacity jitter to pen pressure and adjusting the minimum opacity allowed. Find somewhere that YOU like. Also, spammed question marks don't make your sentence anymore of a question than if you had just used one.

Very interesting and educational as usual, Scott, you are out of any doubt one of my favourite masters... I have a question for a quick tip: i've noticed, when your mouse freaked out, you were actually able to pan the document outside the window even if i believe you were in the "Standard View" mode, it's something i can't do and it's quite annoying to have the document locked in the center of the screen unless i change the view mode. Can you tell what settings i should change? (so nerd... :)

how or where do I learn about how to use all the photoshop layer effects Scott? Like multiply, overlay, etc. I have the how to render book and how to draw books. Is it a technical software thing where I read the documentation / test it out? Or is the choice dictate by some fundamental art principles I should probably learn?

Ah okay, so its a technical thing. Thanks! Yeah that would be cool. I'm really glad the ideas of from the How to Design book are getting posted on your Gumroad, I'm a customer. There really isn't a whole lot of "How to Entertainment Design" literature out there that's as in depth as your how to render/draw series. I'm usually referring to industrial design textbooks for 3d design training for now.

Another great tutorial, do you always use grey scale for values? I was taught to use colours such as blue for skin shadows, red under gold etc. I try to use grey scale values but when I apply colour, it seems muddy. I change the opacity but lose the luminance.
@scottrobertsondesign
9 жыл бұрын
scott adsett I usually don't do color work with traditional media so it's easy to take the grey scale marker image into PS and colorize it where it will not be muddy.

Scott Robertson Thanks for replying, much appreciated. I think I might have to give Ps a go.
