This video introduces materials and demonstrates in oil paint to copy a Japanese woodblock print in 6 values with intelligent selection of edge and shape quality. The student will learn value grouping, value simplicity, large proportion relationships, gesture, and an introduction to edge quality. A Japanese woodblock print is chosen because the value groups are clear like a simple poster study. All great masters were great graphic designers of shapes in both Western and Eastern traditions. Japanese woodblock prints are great resources for learning design and painting fundamentals and many of the Western masters of the 19th century such as Degas, Monet, and Mary Cassatt studied them.
