I dont know why someone or Valve just doesn't make a controller that has an identical layout to the SD without the screen. They're leaving money on the table! so many times I'm using a bluetooth controller and i'm like ughh gotta go grab the mouse to navigate and do whatever for a quick sec. They could even add a small physical keyboard at the center bottom like those attachments you can buy for xbox/ps controllers. that would literally be perfect for mouse/keyboard inputs on a controller. Most games that I can think of that would benefit from having a trackpad are single player or online multiplayer only. This means that this controller seems like it would be really good for two player or three-player games assuming they brought out a first party steam control with all the features including track pads.

It's a common design Hori uses now. In fact on Amazon Japan, there is a Nintendo Switch controller (That they market works with Steam) that has the exact layout. I got fooled for a second until I noticed the Switch Logo. Blunty speculates in his video that Xbox controllers are not easy to find in Japan because Xbox has little presence there and Sony's Dualsense is still not the most ideal controller for PC. I guess Hori saw an opportunity to get a controller out quickly and cheap. (No touchpads). Not sure how big Steam is in Japan.

The Dualsense edge has the same amount of inputs but also has a touchpad for even more inputs and it currently has the best gyro on the market. It doesn't have capacitive sticks though, but for online shooters is that really an issue? when most would want gyro to always be on. I'm still intrigued though.
@bland9876

1. No controllers worth paying over $100 for 2. You need the capacitive thumb stick so that you can reset your hand because A. Gyro isn't perfect and sometimes your hand is not uncomfortable position anymore because of the gyro and so you need to stop the jar from activating and reset your hand and B. Sometimes your hand is in an uncomfortable position even without the fact that gyro is not perfect. 3. People complain about the battery life on PlayStation controllers.
@CandarianGaming

@bland9876 You're definitely right about the price and the battery. I personally don't have issues with positioning, as both my sticks/gyro have high sensitivities so very minimal movement is required. I use the left paddle to toggle gyro on/off but it's not something I use much. The main tester will be the gyro for a lot dualsense users as it's the best at the moment.

I imagine Valve is hard at work at perfecting some kind of Steam Dock right now, which will finally realize their vision of having their own Steam console experience in homes, by Steam Dock of course, I mean a Steam Dock for your Deck that has a discrete GPU integrated into it, well Valve could go one of two ways, they could design it with a GPU, something like a mobile version of an RX 7800S or 7700M, or they could go with an FPGA lossless integer scaler, that uses post-processing antialiasing, so it could take the Decks native resolution and scale it to 4K with significantly upgraded fidelity versus native HDMI output, they could even partner with someone like Marseille who created the mClassic, of course, the GPU would be much better, and turn the Steam Deck into the ultimate Handheld/Console hybrid, the ultimate high-end Switch so to speak, perhaps the ultimate option in terms of keeping cost under £300, would be an AMD RX 7600M and an FPGA for hardware accelerated line multiplication, offering lossless integer scaling, chequerboard rendering, BFI, frame-sync and other features, this would be the next step if I was Valve, release it alongside a new special game release, Half-Life 3 perhaps ???? Valve? lol, we wish, but yeah, a Steam Dock like that, would add more value to the already fantastic Steam Deck.

How long are going to stay behind the competition in resolution, processor, memory, and screen hz? I remember selling my oled Steam deck long ago because of the lack of power. I had planned to get another one after a power update.
@Bootchair
3 ай бұрын
Many factors. Almost too much to list. The steamdeck OS is getting more efficient as time goes on. The oled screen is already at 90hz. There’s no reason to go beyond that. Sure there 144hz screens on handhelds but the power consumption is atrocious. There’s only so much space for the battery unless they start with a brand new chassis, Which won’t happen for a long time. The steamdeck from its first iteration to the latest has seen overhauls to every single component. Zen2 is still a power house and pretty conservative on battery. With the launch of zen5, and still Being on TSMC N6/N3/N4X process node while being more efficient and a chip level we may finally see an updated steamdeck with updated hardware. I wouldn’t hold my breath because prices for zen 5 are going to be expensive for a while. Were a year out minimum.

I'm going to guess the use of PS controllers on PC has to do with people having PS for a console (FF might be on Steam but there are still JRPGs out there that aren't on PC) so they might as well use that. The other reason I'm going to guess is driving up this trend despite the software issues is the ergonomics. My three grip fingers and trigger gingers absolutely love the XBox controller, especially if I'm playing a game for hours. My thumbs are different matter as the D-Pad feels too far away. It's not a problem for the right stick but it's not like I play FPS games with a controller (well, OK, I put Warframe on 3rd person view - controllers just make melee combat easier) for hours on end, but as much as I played SF in the arcade before, I get forced to use the left stick over the D-pad because of how it feels trying to reach the D-pad. I ended up trying a GameSir T3. Triggers feel like total POS to the T4 Pro, but my left thumb doesn't feel like the D-pad is too far on fighting games and it feels fine on mecha games, but what do you expect from a $22 2.4g wireless controller. What still kinda sucks is my three grip fingers just find it way too small, which is a thing for PS4 and older. I'm guessing the PS5 controller's grip might have fixed this, but even if they haven't, it's way easier to just win fighting games on a PS controller (with my left thumb not having a problem) and take a break or at least most RPGs are slower-paced in terms of input so I just have a very loose grip.

There are Chinese controllers with Xbox layout ,hall effect joysticks and analog triggers with rumble and back buttons, 2.4ghz bluetooth for 50 dollars, pretty much end game controller (gulikit, 8bitdo). What's the point of this new steam controller then? it got nothing.
@SoundToxin

This controller is indeed disappointing, but what it does have is the ability to have gyro and analog triggers at the same time, and back buttons supported for separate inputs from the other buttons. I have GuliKit KK2 Pro and KK3 Max, 8bitdo Pro 2, Ultimate Bluetooth, and SF30 Pro. They make good controllers but due to the way they pretend to be Xbox or Switch controllers in their various modes they have some pretty unfortunate limitations. Switch mode has gyro but digital triggers, XInput mode has analog triggers but no gyro. It's pretty much just PlayStation controllers that are able to have both, and those don't have Hall effect sticks, and there aren't many third party controllers that act as PlayStation controllers.
@zaghell

@@SoundToxin thanks for the info, I don't own any of them but I'm considering them because of their stats, I have a regular Xbox series wireless, happy with it but thinking for a second one to be one of those hall effect ones. In your opinion which one should I get?
@SoundToxin
3 ай бұрын
@@zaghell It depends on a few things, like which stick layout you prefer (symmetrical or offset, aka playstation or xbox style), how much you care about back buttons/paddles, and if you think you would ever use macro recording/playback. To start with, the GuliKit KK3 Max looks awesome on paper but has been pretty buggy for me. The Switch mode doesn't work on my Steam Deck for some reason, and if I played wired in XInput mode I get ghost pressed, the steam/home button presses itself randomly every few minutes or so and messes me up in games and activates shortcuts, pretty much unusable if you like to play wired. I reported it to a few people but it doesn't seem like it's getting fixed any time soon. On the other hand their older KK2 Pro works quite well still. The main thing you're missing with the KK2 vs the KK3 are the 4 back buttons they added. GuliKit's controllers can record up to 10 minutes of gameplay and play it back, which can be useful in some scenarios. Like if you need to do something very repetitive you can record yourself doing it once and then let the macro loop to craft a bunch of items for you or repeatedly attack something or whatever. It's also handy if you need time to pass in a game without your Deck going to sleep since even just something like opening and closing the inventory on a loop is enough to keep it awake. The GuliKit controllers have the Xbox-style stick layout, so that's another major factor to consider. All macros and settings and configuration of GuliKit controllers are done without external software, it just uses button combos, which some people really appreciate. 8bitdo has controllers in both stick styles. There's no macro recording/playback. The Switch mode and XInput modes both work on Deck, wired or wireless. So if you play any shooters and want to use gyro aim I would probably lean toward 8bitdo. The Ultimate Bluetooth controller from them has the Xbox/Switch-style layout with the sticks. The 8bitdo Pro 2 is more Playstation-style. The Pro 2 has a very nice dpad and is good for a lot of 2D games. Platformers, fighting games, etc. The Ultimate Bluetooth and Pro 2 both have two back buttons, compared to the GuliKit KK3's 4 buttons and the KK2's 0 back buttons. You will need the "Ultimate Software" app to reconfigure 8bitdo controllers to assign the back buttons and such. 8bitdo recently revised all(?) their old controllers to have Hall effect sticks. The Ultimate Bluetooth was their first to have them. So if you go for a Pro 2, make sure it's the new version with Hall effect sticks. Check description, pictures of the box, reviews, etc. to be sure. So for PS-style sticks I would recommend the 8bitdo Pro 2. For Xbox-style probably either the GuliKit KK2 Pro or 8bitdo Ultimate Bluetooth, unless you never play wired and you think the extra back buttons on the KK3 are worth it. Bugs with the KK3 aside, I would say they're all pretty good controllers, and they all have Hall effect sticks now. I've used them on PC/Deck and Switch, even used some on a modded Xbox 360 and they work pretty well. Also, for all of these controllers, the firmware gets updated over time fixing issues, you'll probably want to update them as soon as you get them.

I will have to disagree with the trackpads with the Steam Controller. I own one for more than 5 years (still alive and kicking), and I use the trackpads with multiple functionalities and most of them are made readily available by the community via Steam Input. I prefer playing Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal using the trackpads of the Steam Controller than a Keyboard & Mouse these days (I'll definitely do the same thing when The Dark Ages come out), and I use the trackpads entire surface (especially edge recognition for other functions) with games like Fallout 4, SkyrimSE, Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise. And I use it on Racing Sims like BeamNG and Assetto Corsa more than any gamepads cause of its uncompromising customization. The pair of trackpads are definitely not for everyone that's given to any unconventional inputs but that doesn't mean it doesn't work on games.

I had a retro controller that worked on the steam deck and then I guess steam deck didn’t update in my retro controller that looks like the super Nintendo controller now is picked up as an Xbox or PS3 controller and I’m like that makes me angry because I was using that to play my retro games. Because apparently you can’t use a modern controller even though years ago I could on the PC.

I’ll also use the Kong two controller if I remember correctly

Boycott Valve's actions. Nintendo, Ubisoft, Epic and Xbox don't do this: Valve has confirmed that Steam accounts cannot be transferred to another person after the account holder's death. This policy means that the ownership of a Steam account and its associated game library remains non-transferable, even if specified in a will.

I love how customizable the Deck's controls are. If the Steam Controller 2 is as good as the Deck's controls, this is going to be the best controller ever. If it had a trackpad and the sticks are Hall Effect, that would put this right over the top for versatility and longevity. I'd gladly pay 150-200 bucks for this, since I'd very likely never have to replace it.

Its not Steam Controller 2, is just an 3rd party making a controller with license from Valve.

Not having rumble is a major dealbreaker
@smidlee7747

Keyboard and mouse doesn't have rumble and many still prefer using them. One of the disadvantages of rumble it's kills the battery life like the PS5 controller. A controller without rumble can last for months on a set of batteries just like a wireless keyboard and mouse.

@@ethanschenk7147 it makes a huge difference since dual shock 4 controllers (and maybe some 3rd party PS Controllers, but im not sure about that) are also included in those 26%.

well, theres room for 2 tiny squares on the sides of the bottom middle section for tack pads, have a switch to turn them on and off so you dont have to worry about your hand resting on then during gaming. Ive just been waiting for a PC controller that shaped and mostly formatted like xboxs with mouse pad and a spot to plug in a mini keyboard so I can transition between game, tv, and browsing on my PC with the same in hand controller. Its really surprising no one has done this yet.

The dex on steam is for the ps5 controller that works really well with steam maybe that's why more people are using it

+1 on keyboard & mouse for FPS! I tried Borderlands 2 on a PS3 once - what a disaster (my ability - not the quality of the game). My daughter plays COD on her PS4, but I am truly awful with the thumbsticks on any of the shooters...

You can't play shooters well with just the analog sticks (they're neither fast enough nor accurate enough for aiming), but with modern controllers that have gyro you get the speed and accuracy of a mouse in a controller, and with control styles like "flick stick" that repurpose the right stick for fast turns, you can even surpass keyboard + mouse in some ways. Splatoon is the best example of official gyro aim working well. It's still not very popular in games. It doesn't help that Xbox controllers don't have gyro. They're holding everything back. Even on systems with controllers that have gyro, not all the games choose to implement it as an option. Fortnite has both gyro and flick stick and is available on most platforms in case you wanted to try it out. It takes a little getting used to.
