Mate!! That's a great video/help. I have a 76 Mk3 cortina Bakkie (Ute) 3.0l Essex, 5sp manual. Owned it for a week. I believe there is some power/torque to be had out of this little motor? I'd love your input/advice 😎

Hey Warren, assuming you have given it a good service and once over, checked ignition timing, spark plugs, fuel mixture, ht leads etc probably the easiest modifications for any classic car would be a good set of long tube headers and free flowing muffler and exhaust. A high flow air cleaner and possibly a carby upgrade depending what your running. I say these points first as it doesn't require diving into the engine and your likely to get some solid gains. Some cheap insurance is to inspect the condition of the oil pump hexagonal drive by pulling the distributor and looking into the engine to see if it is badly worn or the hexagonal in the bottom of the distributor is badly worn. Once those points are covered, you could look to port match the intake to the cylinder heads but probably not that beneficial without a aftermarket mild road camshaft. From that point, your really looking at pretty major engine work such as uprated camshaft, engine balancing etc. Please note I'm not an engine specialist, it's just the most likely order I'd go about it.

Did you ever consider roller-tipped rockers from a chev?

I didn't know chev ones could be adapted to fit. I have heard of chev pistons being used. I'd like to upgrade bits on the engine so it's suitable to buzz up to 7500-8000 so some roller rockers are definitely on the cards.

@@feralfabrications2465 Yella Terra make some, but supposedly 1.6 ratio SBC work. I'm following it up now - if I find out I'll pass it on. That's spinning pretty damn fast for an Essex.

Yea I've seen the yella terra rockers for sale. I'm thinking my upgrade path for the engine is: 1. high comp pistons, performance conrods and balance the bottom end. 2. Port & flow the heads & install larger valves & roller rockers. 3. Tripple carbs. To be fair it honks along OK but still plenty of HP to squeeze out of it yet. Unfortunately, I'm still cutting rust out of the body!

@@feralfabrications2465 There is far more support for these engines in NZ so you have lots of good suppliers over there, better than in Australia. The good thing about the heads is that you don't have to enlarge the Ex valves - they're already on the big size. Bigger intake valves are a good idea and lots of people like the triple webers. I have to get the rust out of mine - a big job.

No I believe that is a completely different engine so I would recommend finding the info for that specific engine

This is the essex and yeah the cologne is a completely different engine so would have different specs
