I have been camping in India since forever. These are a few good ways to cool your body down during hot summers or heatwaves that you guys are experiencing. 1) Tie napkins at your wrists and keep them wet. That cools your body down by at least a few degrees. 2) Take a cold shower before you sleep and use only cotton sheets as your bedding (sleep outside at night if there are no mosquitos). 3) Coconut water is great to cool your body down as well as give you the salts and nutrients you lose via sweating. 4) Park your van in a cool spot, in shade or windy area (think about cross ventilation if there's any breeze) 5) Have a few pieces of Fruits like melons, Watermelons etc every 2-3 hours so your body temp remains cooler than the surroundings.

As an australian who built their van specifically to deal with these kind of temperatures on the regular, you need better air flow options in there. A second roof fan would be optimal but an opening window (with fly screen) to pair with your roof fan would also work. Personally, I have two opening windows at one end, a maxx air fan at the other and a sirrocco fan for extra flow. In addition to this, I also have closable vents that bring in air from beneath the van (where it is coolest) when I put my maxx fan on extractor mode. I installed those specifically so I don't have to have my windows open while sleeping. In addition to all of this, I also have a double sliding door which means that during the day, I can open the van up completely. I also have excellent insulation all around and enough solar on the roof that it forms a protective layer to stop direct sunlight hitting the roof. All this combined makes for a very comfortable environment, no ac needed.

I live in Australia (Yank Teacher, Vietnam Veteran (101st Airborne) who moved down under after 9 years Army. I got an air conditioner, split system I just finished up as it's winter here. My fear is the rain ... AGAIN ... expected here this summer on the east coast and the lack of good solar conditions. I hate running the generator to charge up my batteries, but I do have twin alternators when we drive with one just charging the "aircon" battery. I've lived here since 79 and trust me it gets hot and it's getting hotter! We also use silver packing bubble wrap for our glass during the day as it does help ...just saying... plus it beats sleeping on the jungle floor as we did 330 days out of my 365 day combat tour in the war... mud, leaches, bugs, snakes ... once even spotted a tiger up ahead on the same trail ... so camping in my van is a luxury ... Ryan, you can make your portable air conditioner much more effective and efficient. If you did this, you probably wouldn’t need to have a hose on the cold-air outlet, and you wouldn’t need to keep moving it around to blow directly on you. Instead, the entire interior would be cooler and drier. And the A/C would produce less condensate. BTW, this observation also applies to other portable miniature and room air conditioners that have only one hose leading to the outdoors. The way you are using your Zero Breeze is with only one hose to take hot air from the A/C out of the van. But… all air leaving the van is replaced with an equal amount of air drawn in from outside, so you are bringing in a lot of new warm moist air. It’s the same as leaving the doors and windows open. All air conditioners have an inlet into the cold-side and an outlet from the cold-side, plus an inlet into the hot-side and an outlet from the hot-side. Currently, your inlet to the hot-side is inside the van (i.e., on the body of the Zero Breeze). To cool the van more effectively, you would connect the hot-side inlet to a hose to draw in outdoor air through the hose -- instead of through the van. By stopping new warm humid air from being drawn into the van, as the air in the van recirculates through the cold-side, the interior of the van would steadily become cooler and drier. When I Googled to find out what people thought of the Zero Breeze, many were very dissatisfied with how poorly it cooled. Actually, it’s doing exactly the amount of cooling it’s designed for, but by drawing in outside air through the van instead of through a hose, it’s being forced cool excess warm humid air. This is a waste of cooling capacity. Users would have better results if they connected a hose leading directly from outdoors to the hot-side inlet.

Yep exactly. To put it another way portable AC like this one are very inefficient as they pump out hot air outside but they force hot air to be sucked into the van to equalise the pressure. Very wasteful. A split system AC where the air inside the van is totally isolated from outside the van is very efficient. The older design "window rattler" are very efficient as they also isolate the inside and outside air.
@asdfhgjkl9
2 жыл бұрын
Hey dude, you aren't using that AC correctly, you have to have the intake hose connected to the outside not just the exhaust hose. The AC has two sections that have separate airflow, the first is the compressor and condenser at the rear and the second is the evaporation/cooling at the front. Gas is compressed in the rear, this creates heat, as does the motor in the compressor. The compressed gas travels through the pipes and when it reaches the evaporation section, it evaporates which cools the pipes down. The two pipes suck in air from outside which cools the compressor and condenser, and then it blows the hot air back outside. It can be 110f and it will still work because the compressor and condenser get much hotter than the ambient temp. The front section has the cool side, which sucks air from inside the van, cools it and then pumps it back into the van. The way it is currently set up, you are cooling air with the front section, but then that cool air is being sucked into the compressor and vented out of the van. This creates a pressure difference between the van and the outside, so hot air is sucked back into the van to replace the cold air being blown out. It also means that the AC is attempting to cool itself... Which makes it perform even worse and is a waste of power. That is also why, as you say in the video "it is only keeping the spot cool that it is blowing on"

Agree cook the shrimp first. It can be fresh lemon juice if you don't have enough limes. You only need enough lemon to cover shrimp. Am from NZ, that's how we cook our 'raw fish' - lots of salt & lemon over cubed pieces of fish. Leave in fridge min. of 1 hour or o/night. The salt & lemon marinate the fish. After marinating pour off the excess fluid & lemon if u don't want it too tangy. Add chopped spring onions & parsley & a little coconut milk. It should be chunky not soupy. Add a little squeeze of lemon for more zing.

You are the first person I've seen properly attempt to use this AC correctly as far as space cooling goes. I long ago knew that if I ever got the zero breeze, I'd have to create a small compartment that could minimize the space it would have to cool and thus create an actual small area that would be cooler. WAAAAAY too many people 'test' it by having it trying to cool basically a small room (or large room.... pending the size of their camper). And when it predictably fails to cool such a large space, they call it a failure. Granted, I do get that the amount of power it uses for its cooling power is not good. However, going smaller takes time and I'm sure in time, stronger "small AC" will eventually come out. I just upgraded to a honda Odyssey and one of the things I've done so far is create 2 compartments in my van (3 if you count the driver's area) to assist with cooling via fans. However, I've already got ideas on where I'll put my AC compartment if I ever do grab a zero breeze.

You had the beginning of a great idea when you blew the air under a blanket. I'd suggest making a small blanket fort on the bed (Just big enough to toss and turn in a little) and cooling just that small sleeping area. That AC does not have the BTUs to cool a whole van, but it might cool the small area inside a blanket fort.

Those aren’t be best of AC units but here’s a few tips to try to get more out of it. Add more insulation to the bed area particularly roof & walls, you’ll want to create a sleeping compartment at least with a heavy cover to reduce the zone to be cooled. Next is to have a hose hooked up to where you’re pulling air from the sleeping compartment as the intake air for your A/C. Ideally this will be the coolest air, and the AC unit won’t have to work as hard. You have the right idea to exhaust the hot air to the outside, but keep in mind that those hoses aren’t the most efficient and radiate (lose) heat (and cold). Keep at it and best of luck.

Hey Ryan, try using both holes in the vent fan cover to connect both inlet and exhaust of the AC. Right now, hot and humid air from outside is constantly coming into van's interior thru the open hole of the vent. By isolating exterior air to only flow within closed AC loop will make inside of the van much less humid and bearable. Of course, van being more air tight will help maintain the humidity and temp!

In my 6x10 cargo trailer conversion I installed a window Shaker 5000 BTU AC and just vented it through the floor with two vents one for the hot air to push out that is separated from one to suck cool air in then I built a cabinet around it below my sink. On the low setting on a hundred plus degree day it will freeze me out. Usually I will just flip it on for 15 minutes and then turn it off for an hour or two as long as I'm not opening and closing the doors. And it hardly gets my 2000 watt generator running. It's definitely worth considering if you're going to continually be in hot areas like over here in Washington

This was so helpful, thank you. Some other tips would be 1. to try curtains and/or a bed tent so as to make your space smaller and trap the cool air; 2. bigger fans, hanging and aimed at different parts of your body 3. mist e.g mist yourself with a spray bottle and turn the bigger fans on full blast, it's amazing how it makes your fan feel like a/c; 4. cool your van down with the van's a/c first before you get into bed, that might help; 5. KZitem: DIY standing fans with coolers filled with ice attached to them, makes the fans feel like a/c; 6. there are 'cooling' blankets on amazon; 7. crush some ice and fill up a rubber hot water bottle - put a couple on the bed, under the cooling blankets, and also you can have another one that you use to 'hug' like a teddy bear (in the winter I fill it with hot water and keep it on my lap when I'm at my desk, and sometimes just hug it in bed to keep me warm, I'm assuming it would work the same way as a cold water bottle) Hope these ideas help someone, not a vanlifer so haven't tried any of them yet. Please let me know if you try them by responding to this post, hoping it will help some vanlifers in the upcoming summer heat.

I have proven this method to work with weak window ac's in small apartments. and if you can use a small van to keep you cool.... The problem with Ac's these days is that the design does not address linger hot air that rises. Create circulation and stay cooler.. Saved us allot on eclectic bills in real time practice.

For your vans battery the smart thing would be to have a battery bank built in there. Have a main one for the van with a discharge switch in between the main and accessory battery. By doing this it will charge all your batteries while the van is running, but when your van it not as long as everything is hooked up to the accessory batter then it drain those batteries and not drain the main battery therefore you wont have to have an external battery bank. Also can throw some solar panels on the roof and your be set!

That was such a crazy heat wave last summer. I wasn't there then, but the apartment where I lived in Bellingham not only didn't have AC, the ONLY window that opened was in the living room. I thought I'd die when it hit 80. They just are not used to those temps up there. Seattle is actually about the same latitude as London and has very similar weather. It's not supposed to be hot there. I do outpatient hospice nursing and have a way to prop my iPad up in front of my AC vent to cool it off just so I can chart. I get it! Again coming back to edit. When I was stationed on Guam in the Navy I learned to make a dish called Kaleguen which is basically the beef version of ceviche, also "cooked" by citrus marinade. You always ask for something new to cook...there ya go. Add some Chamorro cooking to your repertoire All I'll say is if you give that a google, make SURE you squeeze out ALL the blood!

In my experience, if I say I'm tired to a cop, they test for alcohol by using the 2nd test kit that is broken so it's always showing positive. It's always fun in court later when they find out I'm highly intolerant, technically allergic, to it and would be in the hospital if I did drink. But not everyone gets to have that option to get out of it and make money off the cops in a lawsuit.

A suggestion: try putting extra insulation around those tubes otherwise most of the heat will escape back into the room via the tubes.

Hey Bro, have you considered being a digital nomad and traveling to places like Thailand? I was going to do vanlife but the saving process is taking me too long. So, my plan is to live in Thailand for like 1k a month and save a bunch of money so i can get to do vanlife sooner. Would be sick to see you out there and link up. I'm applying for my passport tomorrow.

Nice! Just a suggestion. As far as your AC, remember that cool air drops and heat rises, so you should try and configure your AC vent hose higher above the bed so the cool air will dropped everywhere covering a wider area and not working as hard. 👍

How about you install a low voltage flush ceiling fan. To help circulate the air and reduce the work your ac needs to do. You could also installl a pop up roof tent to help cool off your van

big tip, some people like to use spreads like mayonnaise and whatnot on their tostada before adding ceviche on top. They have chipotle spreads as well that are really good to be between the tostada and ceviche

It was such a great idea to get your jewel well cooled under the blanket. If the blanket, or better a linen would be made damp it feels really cool ;)

You need ziploc bags and paper towel. To keep all those greens fresh. Don't store them. In their plastic bags, they will rot faster. They will stay fresh or wrapped in a paper towel. And the plastic bag for three weeks

Get a muslin wrap (in the baby section of most big stores) Soak it in water and wring out so damp and put that on your body (preferably with just underwear on) and let the air blow on to that. It will make a huge difference - Australian whose lived without aircon in summer!

I'm not sure if it has already been mentioned, but companies like BedJet sell baffled sheets for an air conditioner to pipe in to. It works great for my situation and I don't need to keep my house as low as I once had my AC set at. Secondly, having never liked the heat, I've always had a high core temp, I started cold showers in May. Most think I'm crazy, but it lowers my core temp low enough where I don't have night sweats AND... I've regularly worn hoodies in the recent months in MO. If I miss one, I do notice it. I hope you escape the heat though. Have you ever thought of traveling to arid regions for the heat? In my younger days, I was stationed in 29 Palms (Yucca Valley) and acclimated to it rather quickly. 120 in 29 Palms, CA, was a hell of a lot better than 90 in Camp Lejeune, NC. It's not the heat, but the humidity. With the dry heat, misters and airflow work wonders. Just a thought.

you van guys are funny I have a 25ft Class B + that I have about half the amount invested in as you van guys have in your vans and my RV has 20k miles. I push a button my onboard generator fires up, I have a new 15,000 BTU Air that comes on and cools it quickly even while I'm driving if my dash air isn't enough. I can stand up and walk around, I have a actual bathroom, a hot shower whenever I want it. a actual porcelien toilet with a on board holding tank (not a porta potty) more water storage, more storage total, a dedicated queen bed, a separate sofa, I can stay at a campground somewhere or boondock just as easy as a van. A van might get 4 or 5 mpg more but who cares compared to the more comfort I have. Plus I can get a loan for the actual value of my RV all a DIY camper van is worth to a bank is the value of the cargo van. I did the custom van thing for a year or so until I came to my senses and bought a RV.

Firstly I use the weather sites to monitor the temperature. Just thinking that heading north will be the answer is a major mistake. Don't go north go UP. Check out Leadville or Buena Vista Colorado in July. You will quickly see the point. I have had to have the heater on in August in BV. As for AC I use a cheap 5000btu window ac and when I am not mooching free electricity I use a 2000w generator. I like that little ac but they don't put much out in fact my 5k isn't doing much at anything over 90. My setup is so custom that I can take it down and move in about 5 minutes. The overall big picture is that I am always cool. Sometimes I lose but mostly ok. This winter I am going to upgrade to 6000btu. If you are out on the road and miserable then it reduces to just existence. I am retired and I just move. Been doing this for years.

If I may recommend, you have the workings of a great principle, by tucking the AC hose under your blanket, but I would suggest getting a heavy curtain that runs from the side to side that you can draw back when not needed, and putting a hole in it for the hose and finding a way to secure it. This effectively creates a pocket in your van that is only the size of your bed and since 'hot air rises, and cold air falls' you don't need it to be secured to the roof of the van, only side to side. This now gives you a small space that is being cooled by the AC unit that will not risk coming out from under the blanket if you move, or have someone else in there with you, and you can sleep more comfortably, while being more efficient with your cooling system. Better still, if you can find a way to mount the AC unit in the sleeping area and use the ducting tube to direct the air down onto your bed, and still vent out the same as you do, then the AC unit can cycle off if it get's cool enough, making it even more efficient and using less energy.

I would die in that heat, no kidding. I start getting uncomfortable in the mid-70's. I've nearly had heat stroke a couple of times when it was only in the 80's outside and all I was doing was mowing the lawn. I would love to be in able to live the way you do but my health is such a limiting factor. It sucks ass.

smart idea on venting out your roof fan, you might want to make a curtain that encloses your bed to keep more of the cool air in that part of the van
@rclewis01
2 жыл бұрын
you really need the third tube attached to the ceiling fan area. The way it is now, you are sucking the cold air in the van and pushing it out the ceiling vent. That also lowers the air pressure in the van and sucks outside hot air into the van through little cracks and openings. There is a reason that air conditioning comes with three flexible tubes. But, great videos. I just want you to stay cool.
@rocknh68
2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Maybe cover up the second hole that's just pulling cool air out and don't turn the fan itself on. Just open the vent so the exhaust air can vent out the tube.
