Jacquelyn N. Coutré, Eleanor Wood Prince Curator and curator of Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape, presents an overview of the exhibition and introduces talks related to the show by four leading scholars. Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde is a groundbreaking exploration of the northwestern suburbs of Paris between 1882 and 1890 by five artists: Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Emile Bernard, and Charles Angrand. Seeking to distinguish themselves from the established rear guard of the Impressionists, this ambitious group investigated the evolving area immediately outside of the city, finding the increasingly industrialized landscape to be a rich source of inspiration. These four talks share new research around the artists featured in the show, their peers, and their contemporary moment.
This program is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.
