Perhaps literally 'the coolest' ie. others being more flammable characters ;-) Through his vocals he gave the live playing a foundation so Dave could mess around, squealin'n'screaming and of course through the bass he, together with Alex's superb drumming made a huge live canvas for Eddie to paint on.

I like all the eras. Dave was too controlling and held Eddie back from being as creative as he wanted to be, which he himself stated. You can tell because when Sammy joined, his playing and the compositions got more complex and inventive. I love the Dave era stuff but it was pretty simple rock'n'roll stuff and as much as I love it, Eddie wasn't satisfied with the same blues rock style. Sammy didn't try to tell Eddie what to play or whatever he could play keys are collaborate with other musicians, so that freedom was evident in the Sammy-era music. I even like some of the tunes on Van Halen III and in my opinion, his solo on "Year to the Day" was the most gut-wrenching and emotional solo he ever played on record. Van Halen was not about the singer.... it was about the brothers. Period.

Totally. DLR didn't even need to be consistent or that good vocally because presence wise he was always "on". The guy just completely changed the game in terms of how a lead singer carries themselves and the band. Bottom line, VH was all 4 of these guys .., not just one out of this world guitar player. I mean would Hagar in the early years have delivered the sleeze of these early albums? Not even close.
@Polentaccio
3 жыл бұрын
@@autodidacticprofessor869 It was probably time by the time DLR departed anyway. You can't just keep the same thing going forever and there is no way Dave would have been able to sing the more melodic stuff from the Hagar era. That said, Hagar sucks on the DLR era stuff and he looked like a dork on stage for most of his tenure. They are almost two different bands.

As a sophomore in high school I went to see Black Sabbath & instead watched Van Halen BLOW THEM OUT OF THE Seattle COLISEUM. We had NO idea who Van Halen were yet, but from the first radical new Eddie lick and their EXPLOSION of raw energy we were fanatics and wound up splitting maybe 4-5 songs into Sabbath. The first time I saw this was in 1982, we just got MTV. Before that I only had their albums and posters and my imagination of what they were like live. The day finally came....Unchained...I was 12. .I went from a fan to being obsessed. They made me feel truly alive like nothing ever did before in my life. I started then to take my singing more seriously and practiced singing to their albums EVERY DAY after school. By age 19 I was playing gigs. By age 20 we were scouted by managers and agents. Although we never got signed, I was a busy musician for 30 years. I got to be Dave; in shape, shirt off, feeling tribal every night we played. Thank you Alex, Michael. These 3 videos were the Holy Grail of early MTV. I would sit in front of the TV for an hour if they even mentioned the possibility of a VH video being played. Of course, they always played it at the end of the hour, but I could never take the chance if they didn't. So I sat there... waiting for it to come on. And when it did, it was like the sky exploded into an absolute Rock 'N Roll Heaven that just bathed the Earth in a sound found deep within our souls. Or... I jumped so high I hit my head on the ceiling and passed out... and that's what it felt like. Today, Chuck Berry passed away (actually it's 4am so it was yesterday). My thanks to him and all like him who led up to what this band has given us over the years. Without them, VH would have never been possible. The fact that they are, the fact that they have made me love music so much, is a testament to the entire concept of Rock 'N Roll to which Mr. Berry contributed so much. I love Rock 'N Roll. And I love The Mighty Van Halen. Thanks to Chuck Berry and all who paved the way.

The first trem that Eddie used was the Rockinger trem system. From what I was told, the people at Rockinger weren't the easiest people to work with and actually suggested Eddie should change his playing style to accommodate the trem. Rush was big at that point, however I'll throw my hat in the ring with this- Boston Ma- I saw both Rush and VH at that same time. Moving Pictures and Exit Stage Left changed my playing considerably. Was never a fan of Rush until I heard Red Barchetta and Camera Eye. Point I'm getting at- when Rush rolled into town, it was nothing like the buzz surrounding Van Halen. VH took over the entire floor at the Copley on Boylston St a caravan of buses outside the place. One could smell the electricity in the air. Rush came into town, I don't even where they stayed, as if just another band rolled into town. Biggest thing I took with me after the show, to this day, was how bad the mix was. The entire show seemed like the mains were down, finally got it figured out for the encore. YYZ sound killer but that was it. Everything else, the entire set, the mix sucked dead goat weenie. Never experienced / heard anything like with anyone else before. Was crushed. Van Halen was at its peak, plus- you had the baddest guitarist on the planet marrying America's sweetheart at that time as well -Valerie Bertinelli.. They were on the cover of every magazine you could think of..

This is great, VH in their prime. Even Diamond Dave sounds good and is on point here. After Fair Warning they never reached heights like this again I loved that album and the tour as you can see was ridiculous. I haven't been able to watch much of the new "reunion" stuff, it's like watching old ballplayers come back again and suit up. Eddie and Alex still sound great of course as musicians and Eddie's kid is no slouch but it's been too long now and Dave's really lost his voice. I like to remember them as they were back in their prime.

@Chirbeef

No one in their right mind believes Ed invented tapping. That's not the point. He had a very unique style and used it as a tool in a new way. That's what makes him great, not the gimmicky Eruption style tapping; it was certainly revolutionary enough to fool music critics of the time into believing it was a keyboard overdub, but I suppose it gets old after 4 decades. It's his rhythm playing and tone more than anything. Also, his bluesy licks are absolutely killer when you break them down and think about the theory behind them. Incredible that those just came out live in the studio, over and over again.

You can throw out all the superlatives you want about The Master, but there is never going to be an argument about his mastery of his chosen art. No else had players around the planet going "What the F is that". From his grin to his fingers Eddie was born to bring us joy through his expression of his art, and you can thank whatever god you believe in that he shared his joy with us. ALWAYS #1 UNPARALLELED. When the master emerged, from the opening chords of you really got me, every player knew the sonic landscape was changed in a way that was unheard of up to that time. Eruption smashed his foot onto your throat daring you to try to emulate him. No one can. do you know why? You cant be Eddie because you don't think like Eddie. But Diamond Dave.......was very PATHETIC. He sang like every other 4th word of each song. No classic screams or yells or even kicks. He literally RUINED each song that Eddie was SCREAMING out on his kick-ass guitar. AND about 5 concerts AFTER Saint Paul the rest of the tour was cancelled because of Diamond Dave's SHIT performance. Dave was the driving force, he wrote every lyric in every song, designed the stage sets, all the album covers and yes all there stage clothes to, to end it all he also read every contract and made all the band aware of what they would and would not be getting! So I loved Sammy with them to , but walking on Dave’s success for his band kinda sucks I think then talk shit about the guy that was getting u paid to! So they think that Dave wouldn’t be successful anymore! Wrong the next year his new band broke the record book playing at donninham in front of almost 400000! Renegade 21 - Eddie's earliest instincts for guitar tone were the best. You can understand a player gets tired of touring with the same sound always, it's fatiguing. Your brain hates the repetition. But you'd wish he would go back to a grindy and crunchy sound that's like a cranked Bassman or Plexi, that raw sound. I know that Eddie does not like the mechanical reliability issues of old Marshall amps, that could be part of why he got away from them.

What I remember is these three songs were presented individually as music videos on MTV, when the channel was launched. These songs received heavy rotation and they were mind blowing and mind bending! This album and it's tracks wasn't played much on the FM radio when it was released in 1981. We didn't hear it, but we saw it and we went out to buy the album. Either an LP or cassette. CD's hadn't really taken off yet either. MTV didn't have a lot of videos to play, because it was a new format. We definitely saw bands that we would never have heard on the corporate Rock stations of the day in 1981. I knew about Van Halen because the first two albums were huge!! 1978 and 1979. 1980's Women and Children First didn't get a lot of radio play and for some reason, Van Halen wasn't getting the same amount of press attention in 1980 and 1981. All these New Wave bands were getting all the push in radio and print. MTV, definitely rekindled and showcased their power, talent, prowess, appeal and relevance. They did something right, because we were all blown away by the live performances of these songs. Keep in mind that I was 8 years old at the time. It made a huge impression on us all. I was too young to see them all together before Van Hagar, which I didn't like. When they reformed in 2008, I finally got to see them at MSG. Biggest party I've ever been too. People all around smoking weed, passing bottles of Jameson, sniffin the dry goods. One great song after another!!!! They still had the greatness even though it took nearly 20 years for them to get back together. Greatness forever!!

I agree to a point, but I think the bigger picture is that Eddie’s ego is what destroyed that band, in both iterations (I’m not counting the Gary Cherone era). Fact is, regardless of which version of VH you prefer, it was the singers who set the tone. Dave and Sammy ran that band during their tenures, because Eddie is a feckless fuckup, and Alex is a useless sychophant. Talented musicians, but shit human beings.
