This is one take straight through, no punch ins. If you listen to Eddie’s isolated guitar you can even hear him roll off the volume knob on his guitar for the vocal medley. That’s how they did almost the whole album because Eddie wasn’t comfortable in the studio, he just wanted to play like he did live.

The double bass speed on the ending at 3:34 mark 😮 This drum track overall. Perfect complement to Eddies playing here. When you hear it isolated you realize how clean his playing was on this track. I play drums and I thought some of the fills were a bit sloppy until I heard this and realize on the album you just can’t fully hear them. I recommend listening to Loss of Control isolated drum track. On the album its hard to tell if he’s even playing double bass. On the isolated track you hear how hard and fast he’s playing it. It’s a shame the drums weren’t always mixed in like they should of been. Thankfully his drums tone was always tuned so well because that helped make up for sound not being loud enough in the mix. Alex is the man! =\/-|-|= Forever

A good start would be to get a Ludwig Supra-Phonic 6.5x14, put a Remo Black Dot on top, and tune for Bonham. (Very tight bottom head, medium tension on top so you get roughly a G pitch when you hit the drum with the snares off.) Unlike Bonham, though, Alex used some tape for muffling on his snares at that point. Don't forget to rimshot all your backbeats!
@damienparent4415

@@bergerdrum thanks for that, I'll have to give that a shot. I've been into drums for about 5 years but always looking for better sound!
@bergerdrum

@@damienparent4415 And you don't necessarily have to go out and buy a new drum; if you already have a 6.5x14, great, use that. But you can also get a similar sound (at least in the ballpark) with a 5.5x14. Really, it's that sound of a tight snare side (bottom) head with that medium top and that overall G pitch with a little muffling - and rimshots on the backbeats - that you're going for. Good luck!

A lot of my 'punk' friends from 80s CA were criticising VH after Eddie died but, as a musician (drummer, but also guitar and piano), I always loved their stuff. In fact even after I got home from a full-on gig I would often turn on MTV to wind down, and back then they used to play a lot of hard rock in the wee hours of the morning: Rainbow, Motley Crue, Ratt, Dokken etc. and of course Van Halen. RIP Eddie!

Sal Paradise-I think lots of punk rockers/hardcore peeps do that. When I was younger and got into hardcore and punk, I renounced all of the great tunes I learned how to play the drums from. How closed minded was I? We all started somewhere and we definitely didn’t pop out of a womb blasting punk music. Well, at least I didn’t. These guys were great. 😎🙋🏻♂️

@@cpf383 Right before I went over to SF in 1980, I was well into prog and fusion. The first time I heard the Ramones or the Sex Pistols, I thought they were shit! AC/DC too. An Aussie friend of mine played me their first album in 77 or 78 and I thought it sucked. Now I love them. But yeah, punk was actually very close-minded and regimented - kinda totalitarian for all it's espousal of socialism. You could not admit to liking Journey in SF at the time or you'd get beaten up! To be honest, even though I played in a couple of notorious punk bands, I was never really a punk. It just fit my character and anti-social attitude. When I first played drums in England - even though I was way ahead of my age-group - I was always being told to play quieter and not so fast. So punk let me play as loud and fast as I wanted - and then some. But I was always jazz-based rather than blues. And playing piano and guitar - I used to follow the lead guitarist and singer more than the bass player. Anyway, it was mainly because of AVH that I started buying Paiste RUDEs. I was the first in the Bay Area to have a whole set of them - and a white Pearl kit to match!

A lot of punk rockers actually loved Van Halen as it was like the only hardrock band around that was exciting in the late 70's. In the early days Van Halen opened up for the Ramones and in older pictures you can see singer Joey Ramone wear Van Halen shirts. Henry Rollins from Black Flag also admitted to being a huge Van Halen fan. Van Halen is that one band transcending borders.
