The three syncopated tom hits perfectly leading into the chorus is one of the best fills ever IMO.

We'll never hear drum production like this again... It's pure art. That snare is a form of tonal sculpture.

I love the natural slight rebound double he's getting at times on the bass drum from sticking the beater into the head. Incredible drummer..the Ringo of the 80's. Always serving the song the best way!!

I’ve been studying the multitracks lately and it’s actually the other drums/cymbals crosstalking over to the bass drum! He actually mentioned using limiters eventually to avoid the real drums and cymbals from triggering the simmons.

@James Piluso I know what you mean, underrated is an often overused word. But in this case I think it’s used right. Well, maybe not underrated, but definitely overlooked. When asked to name legendary rock drummers, you hear people say (and rightfully so) Neil Peart, John Bonham, Tommy Lee, etc. but very few will name Alex Van Halen for some reason. He often got overlooked because of Eddie. And the thing is, Alex was such a champion of his brother, he didn’t seem to mind.

I don’t think he’s underrated at all. His drum parts are iconic and he’s the creator of THE most talked-about drum part of all time-HOT FOR TEACHER. Anyone that knows anything about rock drumming knows AVH and would have to agree he’s up their right along side Bonham, Peart, Pace and Aldridge as the best that’s ever been.

@jackmomma7481

@@scottpoyer5678 it was all because Alex's drum room wasn't finished until well after the 5150 album. And because of that, they had no choice but to use electronic drum sounds. That was the only way they could be isolated from the guitars as they were being laid down There days, only a fool would go into an actual studio. One can set up in their bedroom and do an entire album by themselves, and it would sound just as good, if not better, than spending 100,000 dollars to rent 5150 for a week

Some pretty intense gating or something going on at 1:07. The cymbals seem to disappear at certain points in the fill, maybe done intentionally to make the drums stand out.

the cymbals are bleeding through the tom mics, and the tom mics are heavily gated. so when the toms are played you can hear that little bit of cymbal wash unfortunately

Oddly, he brought only a couple on the road for the 1984 tour, he used mostly Simmons pads and octo bans live, but the roto tom set up you see in the Jump video is pretty true to the set up he used in the studio while recording the 1984 album.
